    • It won’t, he’s using flux core. With no prep. Need to groove the crack out to get penetration, clean very well and pre heat the area, then ideally TIG it or stick it, if TIG then 75%argon and 25%co2 should be used. Each welding process has its own place, but flux core is not for this. It’s great for your back yard exhaust repair.

You’re right about cleaning up the weld area then growing the crack, BEFORE welding it(regardless of what method he used), but ultimately TIG or stick welding processes would have been the PROPER choice for that application!

    • I had my doubts but I was like... Ok... Ok... Maybe they know something I don't, I'm not an engine rebuilder, I'm not a welder or machinist but I'm like, let's see what happens, usually you throw these things away because there's a reason why blocks and heads are made from a single piece. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Once the integrity is compromised I don't think a weld of any strength is going to keep all that pressure. Imagine the waste of time after you rebuild something like that with all new parts and it gives you only a few minutes of runtime. 😆

  • If it is an aluminum block that has steel sleeves and the aluminum is cracked, not that big of a deal to TIG weld it with 4043 filler wire and then have the machine shop bore it out and re-sleeve it. I do it every once in awhile for one of my customers that has me do a lot of welding repair to outboard engine parts. Most of it is grinding out corroded aluminum from heads blocks and lower units, then putting fresh metal back with the TIG welder before he sends them to his machinist to get resurfaced and reconditioned so they are ready to assemble into a freshly rebuilt reconditioned outboard engine for a boat. But I would not consider repairing something like that, in the way that he did it.

Cuz I’m selling it, not buying it. Besides it’s ‘Used’ not ‘NEW’.” (Actually happened, but not to me. A late former mechanic we hired told us this story, nearly 13 years ago, that had happened back in ‘93. It was at a dealership in OKC, he quit on the spot. Also, the dealership owner got caught rolling back odometers, he still to this day is barred from owning/operating a dealership.)

  • Is the block damage or the cylinder liner sleeve Only? Why not replacing the Cylinder Liner sleeve If that the only problem instead of throwing the whole block? Please correct me if im wrong

  • A machine shop would direct you into doing a sleeve. But if that was a 350 it would be cheaper to get a used block in good condition
