  • I did the math and came up with 9.5 tons at 2500 psi. Called Cole and they told me they downsized the piston as it moved too slow but kept the 12 ton name. In general I have been happy with the press and the support from Cole Ironworks. A 4 in cylinder and a pressure gauge is a great idea.

  • I decided to make my own after watching this video. The Batson pamphlet on building a 24 ton press is a pretty good reference. I'm about $700 in so far, and all I need to buy are the hydraulic hoses and the steel. I'll be just over $1000 when it is all said and done. My 3.5" diameter cylinder at 2500 psi will deliver the actual 12 tons (after I adjust the relief valve ).

    • These presses are awesome! Mine has done everything I have expected it to do and more. This guy is a nitpicker, complainer, whiner. Notice he doesnt show any of his work or explain how this press failed him. He just starts complaining about the 12 ton thing. Some peoples glass will always be half empty.

  • Wow am I glad I saw this. In the market for a press right now, and considering my options, Was considering this guy since it seems to be pretty popular. But if its not what it says it is, and is gonna have quality issues like that. Im not spending that much money on it. Thanks for saving me the headache.

  • Irrelevant. Some people love to nitpick. Sounds like you should have bought a bigger press. My 12 ton crushes 2 inch solid round, no problem. Damascus, no problem. Punching and drifting hammer eyes, no problem. What exactly did the press not do that you were expecting it to do? Forge On!!! ps the link for the press you wish you would have bought is dead. worthless info.

    • I love my press and have 100% success with Damascus, but it is in fact a 9 1/2 ton press that they call a 12 ton press. If some one askes me I would still recommend that its a good value.

    • It used to be a 12 ton but the ram was too slow. They used a smaller ram to increase speed and keep cost down. The only other way was to upgrade the hydraulic pump and keep it a 12 ton, unfortunately that would also increase the price. I have been nothing but impressed with mine. I care not about technical numbers, I care only about performance. I think this dood has OCD when it comes to numbers. Forge On!!!

  • I think you really hit the issues, though the video definitely runs long. It's definitely a good in-depth look though! If I bought something like that and saw that the hoses and hose clamps and fittings were painted like that, I'd immediately start looking for other half-assery. Not seeing specs on the components (hoses, pump, motor) is a red flag too. As you said, running at the max is a bad idea. Big "Made in China" marking on the tank data plate. That sucks. And it wasn't properly welded? WTF?

    • This guy is complaining about nothing. Glad you found it useful. So if a car has a crappy paint job I guess you cant use it as a car anymore. Better to just drive it off a cliff. Said no one ever! Birds of a feather and all. Perhaps you two should go bowling and bitch about every insignificant thing in your lives.
