Coal Iron Works 12-ton Forging Press Unboxing and first Smash, We Bought a Forging Press!
Hello all and welcome back to Empty Pockets Ironworks. Sorry for the delayed and late upload we were at a show out of town this weekend and I wasn't able to do any recording, Also My New Forging press Came in super early so I had to get it prepped and ready to make its debut!
This has been a long time coming, as many of you on my channel know I have Arthritis/Carpal tunnel and a few other ailments due to broken bone injuries from being young and dumb. This causes great distress in my joints and hands, I love forging and working so much I have looked for a way to help assist with some of the more laborious tasks in the shop.
Introducing the Coal Ironworks 12 Ton 110 V Forging press! This bad boy eats steel with ease, is fast and is going to be a wonderful addition to the blacksmith shop!
If you are in the market for a press I highly recommend them, I have followed and admired them for a couple of years now, we opted for the smallest press because honestly it will do all i need it to for now and more.
I demonstrate in the video after its hooked up and operational how this 12 ton smash machine can pinch a 3/4" square bar like its honestly nothing, Even with flatting dies it still moved the metal with ease, this is going to open up so many more options for us in my shop and for the business as a whole.
I know this is not the traditional upload from us but I was super excited to get this thing going and work some material.
This machine set us back just over $3,100.00 delivered to the door, but be wary it is heavy I think one box was 150# and the other close to the same amount. I utilized a galvanized weld table that My great grandfather had built back in the 1950's, I modified the height of the legs and added some beefy casters to accommodate the machine weight. As I work with the machine more and create new dies I am sure I will no doubt modify the table more to accommodate tools and dies as needed and to make easily accessible.
SO Enjoy the unboxing, check out Coal Ironworks and please remember to smash the like button, Tick the notification bell so you can be notified of new weekly content and please share, I upload weekly and my video contributions on KZhead I hope inspire folks to make things.
To my regulars and new subs thank you guys so much we are so close to 2000 subs! I think I will do another give away at 2000.
Take care and forge on!
Chris Hasty

Axes, Damascus, and hammers, oh my! Just bought me a log splitter turned forge press. Now, I get to make all the dyes for it, and, if ya know me, making things gives me the fizz, as Cody says.👍❤️
Oh man a press awesome
Thanks....I am definitely convinced.
Thank you for watching
Congratulations! The new press is really going to be a game changer for you.
Thank you!
Very nice, congratulations.
Thank ya
Congratulations! I too have followed Coal Iron Works for quite sometime on IG and have been impressed from day one with their business philosophy as well as their product offerings. Looking forward to watching what you do with it Chris. All the best!
Thank you I really appreciate it
Gratz man I am jealous!
Thank you!
Thanks for buying one before me! I hope you'll keep us all posted on how it works over time. I've been getting advice that I really need a 40 ton to do four inch thick patterned billets, but it sure looks like this one could handle that.
What sold me was a demo on a hammer 4" stock and a big battle axe head. If the materials got enough it will move lol. I did notice even just on the rail spike, you gotta be really careful with the control or it will end up paper thin in a single squish
Been using mine for a year now and I love it!
Awesome!
Parabéns. Bela prensa hidráulica. Facilita os trabalhos ao máximo.
Great video!
Thank you
good video thanks. sweet c10 too
Thank you!
Thanks for your review this is the first video I’ve watch from you and I’ve been going through the weighing out of different presses and pros and cons this helped me go ahead and buy the orange one you can have the red
That's awesome, it's been instrumental in increasing productivity. I'm not nearly as sore even doing simple things like drawing tapers. I've made a half dozen or so dies for it and have plans for many more. Happy forging
I cant wait to see what you will do with this tool
Thank you
Loved your review so much I went and brought one as well. I'm away working at the moment and when I get home in a week it will be there waiting for me to unpack and set up. I live in Australia and it's been less than a week and it has already passed through Customs. That is so quick. Thumbs up to Coal Iron. Thanks for the review.
That is awesome! You will have to let me know what you think of it after using it for a bit. Thank you for watching I greatly appreciate ya.
Jusy got the 12 ton.
Congratulations,I ordered a purtty green one Sat a week ago and can't wait for it to show up.
That's awesome! I've been having allot of fun with mine, I made a set of fullering dies already and have plans for a ton more. Just for kicks I see out a rail spike and used the press for all the heavy work, refined on the anvil and was ready to grind in less than 15 minutes without sweating. Wish I would have bought one sooner.
@@wrotiron nice,I cant wait to see more of of what you do with yours.
YO YO YO CHRIS GREAT job bro 💪💯💥
Thank ya
I ordered mine on Wed, arrived on Friday. Completely assembled and full of oil. Thanks
Happy forging! Congrats
I have a shop you can set it up in. But CONGRATS on the new addition!
Lol thanks it will definitely help with forging axes
This is on my wish list! Next big expense is going into education (VIB certification) then a power hammer, then this!
It's proven very useful. Thank you for the comment
Thanks for the review. I am looking to buy one soon and wanted to see what you thought of it. Good to hear.. Thanks Subbed and Liked....
Then you so much! Been using it allot and have made several dies, I may make another video soon as an update.
I purchased the 16 ton in original gray, all 700 lbs of it.... At the time they only had the 16 and 25 ton floor model on casters. This is cool how theyve expanded the line. 🤝👍 new sub sir.
Thank you so much.
This is an awesome review! I am the machinist that made a lot the parts on that machine! I have videos of a lot of my processes if you’re interested!
That's awesome, thank you and I'll definitely check it out
Good luck with your new press , you deserve a squishing machine cannot wait to see what you make with it , forge on?
Thank you I really appreciate it
Have had my 12 ton from Coal for a couple of weeks and really like it. Spent the morning making tooling for it out of H13. The only complaint I would have is the blots for changing the dies. It gets hot quick and takes a bit of time to change them, but for the price and the quality of what you are getting for a small shop I don't think you can do better then the Coal. Congrats on the press.
Thank you! I'm really enjoying it, I may make a combo die soon for drawing tapers
@@wrotiron Finished a hammer eye drift yesterday, and am starting on a tomahawk drift soon. Will be uploading a video soon on my FB Chili Pepper Forge.
@@chilipepperjackcowboyactio9947 I'll be sure to check them out. I think I might make a set of texture dies this weekend I've got some rail car coupling pins that are pretty darn hard, might see how they do.
Nice press!
Thank you!
@@wrotiron could I ask? how much oil is required ? what are the characteristics of oil station (power of electric motor and etc)? There is not such press in Russia and I would make it for myself.
I'll have to look at specs, it holds 4.5 gallons of iso 46 hydraulic fluid, has a high bypass fluid transition block. With a pneumatic 12 ton ram. The motor I'll have to look at later. The company does ship internationally. Not sure on customs to Russia though. I'll look at specs after work today and let you know
@@wrotiron thank you very much. But price will be huge if I order it from USA )) and becaouse of exchange rate (sanctions)) ) and cost of delivery.
@@wrotiron Hello. Could I ask another question? what is the power and speed of the electric motor?
Get to it mate I skipped up to 4:50 n box still isn’t open
HI Chris looks like a good little press mate . Mate you don't need to explain why you bout the press . Just look at any blacksmiths shop you will see a press or power hammer . And at the moment i'm half way building one my self .Cheers.(:
Thank you sir, we thought about building one but it was just more economical with work and time to purchase one.
Hey bud. It is Robert. We met at the show today. Will be in touch.
Sounds good, it was great meeting ya
Hey EPI what's your take on the 12 ton a year later? I'm thinking of getting one. Nice truck! Thanks
Still absolutely love it and have had zero issues with it I use it as often as possible
Badass🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
Thank you
How heavy is the Angle iron on the press looks a bit light for that kind of power?
1/4" and the cross sections are 1" the hardware is all grade 8 and the brass wear guides are 1/2" thick. I've ran this machine a ton now and have made about 7 sets of dies for various applications some of which can put horizontal stress and there is zero movement, bending, or groaning from the construction of the frame. There are numerous videos and testimonials on the web site from Smiths who use it daily in heavy Damascus Billet forging and hammer/axe stock.
Hi there what size motor and pump does this use press use?
Not entirely sure if the specs and I'm away from the shop at the moment coal Ironworks site has replacement parts and I'm sure the specs are listed.
@@wrotiron yes I have since seen the specs listed in a online forum, cheers for replying either way it's appreciated. It appears to be a well made press. 👍
@@wrotiron what are the measurements on the angle iron used and other metals used? If you don’t mind sharing?
Check out my latest video after 3 months of using this awesome little press. kzhead.info/sun/a62JgMOae5hrloE/bejne.html
I feel famous
Thanks for helping lift it
Is anyone aware of a Canadian company putting out a similar product?
I haven't heard of any off hand in my searches.
Thank you.
Coal Iron ships to Canada all the time!
@@brandtco.9618 I thought they might but with the exchange, duty and taxes it will add about 50% to the cost.

Sounds great, if you have a Facebook shoot me a message @facebook.com/EPIronworks I'll try to respond after work.
