Everything going wrong at that moment is the realest thing ever
The semi-circle on the end of that striker is what you are supposed to use to strike. Try that to scrape and strike. it should work better.
You've obviously never tried to do that because it's awkward and doesn't work well
@@gregkis Worked for me smh
Fine steel wool lights up like a toaster when you throw sparks at it. Or press a nine volt battery against it. Then you blow at it and it really lights up. Generates tremendous heat.
This shows how important it is to test and get use to the items that you may be depending on for survival. Thanks for sharing the whole experience.
Can you carve the magnesium rod im curious how the knife edge will hold.
When I was just starting my bushcraft journey, I went to an army / navy surplus store, looking for a ferro rod. He told me to use the magnesium block instead. It worked, and made me feel like I won, but now, I'd rather a ferro rod. Lol. Unless, of course, I HAD to use magnesium, like if it is wet or something. I still, all these years later (20+ probably) have the magnesium block in my kit.
Thanx for the real vid..i apriciate you for that
what more can go wrong in this video?
it could have never workd at all lol
@@cutlerylover well there's that but not much else
amazon will get a purchase from me for these...thanks for the heads up jeff.. P.S. use a sharper edge to shave off the mag rod amount before trying to light it off
To all the "just use a bic" internet bushcrafters, those don't work well in the wind. Bics are easily huffed out by wind. Ideally a torch lighter or old school zippo are better. Also, fire starting tools don't weigh a lot so it is better to have more than one option. I think a ferro rod is good for testing, if you can get something to light with one then ignition with a lighter or wind proof matches will go even better.
Sup Jeff? Good morning. Hope everything is good your way
Take care brother ❤
For the future there are two ways to control the wind. When you want wind bring out a can of spray paint. It’s always super windy when you’re trying to paint something. When you want zero wind bring out a kite. When ever you try to fly a kite the wind seems to stop. Hope this helps LOL
This looks to be real pure magnesium. If so great price. The joe robinet fire steal striking method seems weird at first but works well for me
They make some pencil sharpeners out of magnesium. You can scrape some off and put twigs in the sharpener to use the shavings to start it.
I think you could have used a wind-break here! ~ LoL I prefer char/char-cloth with my ferro-rod. When I was actively fighting fires, we had a fer old cars through the years with Mag Wheels and they were the hardest things to put out because they would just spontaneously combust after countless attemps at extinguishing them!
Commenting for the algorithm,Thanks for the video
4:42 you have to laugh hahaha
If the tinder lights easier and faster than the magnesium, you don't really need it. :)
they both light the same if the sparks actualy hit it lol
All i gotta day is a bic or a magnesium pencil sharpener
Thanks for daying that
Use a file on that thing.... u'll get a nice pile pretty quick
If you really needed to get material off and strike, you could sacrifice part of your knife blade to work better.
The cheap blocks are not pure magnesium and don't save well
Lighten up Francis 😂
Darn wind !
your tinder looks like dried hydrangea :)
Really dont get it, a bic is 250 and less work
yes a bic works great a lot of the time but thats not the point, this is for hard to light tinder but this also works in any weather at all where a bic doesnt work wet or when windy...
@@cutlerylover I once started a fire in a rain storm, wet wood with a bic just to see if I could
Some people really just don't get it, man.
how do you manage to find time to make videos jeff? i barely have enough energy to brew myself some coffee...
its still my main job and part of my life so im use to it, but one day it will get harder...
Jeff have u ever had a cheap Chinese pusz
lol no, nor have I treid expensive chinese pusz
If "magnesium is your favorite fire starter " its pretty obvious you have never really had to start a fire in a desperate situation. Those rods are a romanic story that really dont work that good in real life (read wind, water , snow, wet clothes, i need a fire now with no b.s.) situation, there are sooooo many better more reliable options that dont require fine motor skills to use. Cant wait to see/hear about you using these "camping" with your wife, lol. Again magnesium blocks for sire starting are a romantic thought but in reall life its too much b.s. when thats the last thing you want in that situation. Ill be suprised if you ever get in this type of situation in your life.
Magnesium is good for lighting Thermite though.
You need relax keyboard warrior. I didn’t know that bear grylls commented on videos.
@@ClipPointCam😂 exactly that's hilarious
lol no im smart enough to have ever put myself in a situation that if I dont get fire I die, thats the ultimate unprepared person....All this fire starting stuff is to know how to survive and NEVER have to...I hope to NEVER have to rely on my skills to live but know I can...
So why has the military put mag bars in pilot survival kits for decades if they suck so much?
