Here's Why The Porsche Macan BASE MODEL Is Actually GREAT!

The base model is usually the worst version of a car. Luckily, that isn't the case with the Porsche Macan!
Today I have a 2021 Porsche Macan. Thats right, not a Macan S or a GTS, just a plain ol' Macan. But just because it's at the bottom of the lineup, doesn't mean its a bad car. It's actually surprisingly great! Come along with me as I show you some of the cool things about the Macan and then take it on a test drive.
I have a whole story on @VINwiki about that Macan crash that you see at 0:51 you can view it here:

  • I worked at an Audi/Porsche dealer for a year and I've never been a Porsche guy but I loved those SUVs. Porsche interiors are built so well and the Audi motor, trans, and frame are very solid and surprising the car doesn't just feel like a lighter Q5. The handling was incredible it felt so responsive and snappy for an SUV, the exhaust tuning while fake sounded great, and I think they are easily the prettiest SUV's on the road. Not overly aggressive like Lamborghini's SUV, it manages to stand out and blend in at the same time and I love that in a car. If I had the money I would spring for the GTS model because that's where you get an actual Porsche motor but aside from that the base and lower models are practically the same car for a lot less. Doubt anyone will take my opinion into account but I've worked for BMW, Audi, Porsche, and Lexus, if you care about money buy an RX350 you'd have to abuse the thing for it to not run. If money isn't a problem for you the Porsche SUV's are easily what I would tell you to buy, sedan handling in a gorgeous SUV.

  • Welcome back! For a while I think there was talk of lane assist being standard on all cars, but no one wanted to do it because it's expensive. Now that you have competition with autopilot and giant infotainment screens the only way to keep up is to drop some of those features down to "ordinary" base models (it's a Porsche tho, so technically far from ordinary just on the name alone.)

  • The speed limiter, very common in Europe, is good for areas (mountains come to mind) with a lot of curves, where you can't maintain a steady speed on cruise control, but want to limit your speed from creeping up too high. Congested highways, with lots of speeding up and slowing down would be another area.

  • I've got the 2020 Base with a ECU tune stage 1 by a tuner here in my country and it is now around 300HP. It does not solve the lowish torque or turbo lag in this car but absolutely kills it from 2000RPM upwards. Apparently it's as fast as the Macan S if not faster as told by me by others that have had this tune, as the engine is lighter upfront. The tune itself is around $1350US so that is much cheaper then say paying $10kUS for the Macan S which is basically the same car except a 3.0 litre engine in it.

  • My 2008 vauxhall Vectra (UK model) had a speed limiter as standard. Strange that Porsche have only just fitted one. The reason we use them in the UK is because most of our speed cameras have been replaced with average speed cameras. A speed camera snaps your picture at one place only. An average speed camera can monitor your speed over the entire length of the road (which on a motorway can be up to a hundred miles!) In these instances a speed limiter is a life / licence saver

  • The door blocking the hood handle has been a standard feature on most VW products for quite a while. As far as I know, it is there to stop you from accidentally opening the hood while driving if your shoe gets caught in the latch when taking it off the clutch pedal. That apparently was a much bigger risk on some older models, where the lever was near the clutch pedal, was a pointy piece of plastic and also pulled towards the driver, so it was rather easy to get the top of a shoe caught in there when pressing the clutch pedal, which would pop the hood when you release it. They had a second safety latch to prevent it from flinging open, but it still was a bad design choice, so they eventually changed it to this one, which prevents that.

    @unmountablebootvolume@unmountablebootvolume2 жыл бұрын
    • In the U.K. they added to the security feature by moving the pedals to the opposite side of the car. The hood latch is still on the left.

    • Oh that makes a ton of sense! Thanks for the info!

      @ElliottAlvis@ElliottAlvis2 жыл бұрын
    • @@colinselfridge3935 That also works. But engineering is cooler. And, as a bonus, it works no matter where the driver sits. But if you want it simple, putting the lever elsewhere (for example in the glovebox) is probably the easiest and cheapest. Still, this solution is pretty damn clever, and also the best way to prevent lawsuits and insurance fraud, as the lever physically can't be pulled with the door closed, even if you try to.

I sometimes (but rarely) use it when the road is busy and I'm on a stretch of road where you'd easily go way over the speed limit if you don't take care ... if the road is busy then cruise control can be a bit cumbersome, so I can manage my speed accordingly and never worry I'm going over the limit ... granted, you really have to get used to the feeling, it is very strange to floor it and only be going 55 km/h.

  • Absolutely agree with you. Driving the base Macan for almost 8 yrs now (since 2015) and it’s such a nice sporty SUV to own. Previously owned a Porsche 993 manual and a 987 Boxster manual and they all share the same Porsche DNA. This car basically borrows mechanically from the humble Audi Q5 but drives like a different vehicle, which is unbelievable. I have also driven other Macan variants like S, GTS and Turbo from my friends and you are right, they are pretty similar in feel. I reside near the hill side so some modifications are carried out including: 1. Racechip ECU upgrade from 240ps to 300ps 2. Brake upgrades including steel brake lines, endless brake pads & fluid, F & R EBC slotted rotors. 3. Pro-ram high flow air filter 4. Champion iridium spark plugs, APR ignition coil 5. High performance engine oil ( HKS 5w-30) & Rear differential oil (cusco) 6. 5mm spacer on rear wheels to improve stability 7. Turbo muffler delete kit

  • Totally agree with your assessment. Test drove the S and GTS before I purchased the 2021 base Macon. Did not feel much difference between all models, other than the extra HP which was not worth the extra $$ to me. Still enough power to get in to/out of trouble. Found one with standard wheels to save $4K, and enough options to keep me happy ($60K sticker).

    • It’s so true, many reviewers make fun of the base Macan power I had to see for myself. I test drove Macan base and Macan S in the same day I felt absolutely no difference whatsoever both cars as super fast for an SUV in both cars the ride experience is literally the same. I find people who go for the S to be really Dumb in my POV. You just pay more for the same experience. Some people have ignorance issues they hear base model so they automatically avoid getting in one. My advise to you all just drive the base model for once before you put a deposit on the S, just do it and you will see.

We ended up buying a similarly sized and equipped new Mercedes 300 GLC 4MATIC for 50,000. It is not a Porsche (but merely a lowly Mercedes) but has a premium look, feel and driving experience. Also has a 4 year new car warranty. :)

Squeaks everywhere - door panels, central console etc. Also let's not forget about GLC tire skipping/crabbing issue, annoying AF. Switched to Audi Allroad and couldn't be happier, a much better car overall.

Your details about the base model were very good, and it sounds as if outside of the increased HP the base will work quite well. Figure a 2-3 year old used version will be the smartest thing price as well - let the original owner pay for the wheel and other upgrades and get an extended warranty. Thank you again - super informative!

  • Not being able to open the hood is an anti-theft measure. Porsche SUV's are frequently stolen and parted out. Especially in Atlanta and Chicago where they are stolen from valet lots. A.so, 23rd Garage rebuilt a Macan...or maybe a Cayenne...but either way, the hood is around $800. Super expensive. Side panels are also expensive. • Yeah,.. when you are paying $70k for a base model, it better be good. It's the same as if you buy a "base" 911 lol. As you mentioned, no dealer would order the True base model without any option. I walked into a Porsche dealer last summer and they showed me their upcoming Macan list,(non-S) they are basically optioned around $80k. Even in this video, the price is $67k, plus some tax and documents, it is safe to say the Out of the door price is over $70k. Nonetheless, Macan is still going to be my top choice for SUVs. But if I were to buy one, I would look for a used model from 1 or 2 years back.

  • It’s the EA888 turbo 4 which reaches max torque at 1500 rpms. And, it revs so easily. IMO best engine ever built. I traded my 2018 Macan GTS for the 2021 base and tricked it out with my options. Believe it or not, the GTS had less low end torque than the base model. And, the GTS was loud. No matter what speed, there was always this low end drone sound in the GTS. The base model cruises effortlessly and quietly. There is one thing that is so important when considering the base, which is that the engine must be broken in before it really begins to rev easily. For my new Macan, I would say 7500 miles is about right. Then it becomes a rocket. So much fun to drive.
