  • 21:00 - there it is. Gotta say Mr. Carr, this might be the best interview I've seen of Zeihan. You struck a great balance of keeping him on track w good questions without being intrusive. Thanks a lot.

  • Peter Zeihan's methodical analyses primarily differ from many other sources in two ways. First, he doesn't engage in fear based demagoguery. Secondly, he continually considers far more variables in reaching his conclusions. I have followed politics and been a news hound while being devoted to the study of history for the last 50 years. Never have I come across anyone who so diligently considers the variables in such depth. Pay attention to how much he uses fairly pure math data to make his points. He also doesn't claim to know exactly what will happen, but he does have confidence because he interprets the math data in concert with politics and history to anticipate what is likely to happen. He also rarely betrays his personal bias. It's there, but you have to listen closely and be attentive to subtleties. I not only listen to him. I compare what he says to what I see on the ground. One of the most objective people in the country.

    • And he said we would obliterate russia if we had to. I feel so bad for Ukrainians. They thought there were free of the terror when the ussr ended. And the have fought back valiantly. As many cities are in rubble. Lots of great history examples by Zeihan. Lots to be re-learned.

    • Useful because he gets some things very much right, but I'd suggest the things he gets wrong should make his conclusions worth questioning. The blanket assumption that Trump had blackmailed Zelensky ignores a lot of irrefutable history. Is Peter unaware that the US performed a coup in Ukraine in 2014 and that there has been civil war committed by the Ukrainian government on its own Russian speaking people ever since? Has he not seen the Biden shakedown speech at the CFR? These facts are not in dispute.

    @ruralcounsel@ruralcounsel2 жыл бұрын
    • He gives a lot of facts, but he also speaks about his projections as if they are facts. I'm sure there are a lot more possibilities than his projections. I agree about this destabilizing issue. If Russia is dying, why destabilize? If they were going to expand without the pronouncements of NATO coming before every invasion since 2008, how do we know they would have invaded based on securing those 9 corridors. Overall, I like his analysis, but it's just that, one man's analysis.

  • Really great podcast and an insightful (and slightly worrying) look at the global future. One thing that does concern me is, with all the talk of sanctions against Russia and the effects they can have globally on countries like China, what if the very products we think are being restricted are still moving freely. We still recieve ships carrying Russian diesel in the UK, all that happens is a change of paper work or a vessel to vessel transfer off the coast.

    @chrisjohn2010@chrisjohn20102 жыл бұрын
    • You're forgetting about pirates. In a deglobalized world China and Russia would need blue water navies to protect their merchant ships (or militarize all their merchant ships), or be restricted to trading with global partners like Europe and the US that have blue water navies capable of protecting shipping routes. A ton of global trade happens between countries where neither has the capability to protect its imports/exports en route. The whole thing just gets a lot more complicated and expensive, greatly increasing the cost of shipped goods globally.

    • @@SuperTonyony That is just geopolitics for you. Most success stories are accidental, even your skills to deal with crisis or opportunities are somewhat accidental. For example Bill Gates could not do what he did, if he were born in Somalia or similar country. Our fate is dependent not only from ourselves but from billions upon billions of choises other people make and things that are dependent on environment that might be predicted, but never truly controlled. So a good farmer might get crop losses and lose wealth simply because unfortunate weather patterns or because someone decides they want those crops for themselve. In a sense that a person generates wealth is always a lucky accident, because most of the time even skillful people fail. Skills can increase the chance of success, but even that is dependent on the luck that you aren't hit with a tornado or any number of other setbacks generated by the natural world around you.

I think the reality of the situation is that the dollar is about to lose it's tatus as the globally dominant reserve/Petro currency and my limited understanding, based upon the analysis of academics and geopolitical analyst whom apparently have made a career of said analysis is that that's the cornerstone of American superpower.

Crypto will take decades if it ever gets there and no other nation can summon the economic activity the US can assuming we keep a relative degree of global peace and no major earth crisis. As bad as the money printing is, only America can defeat America in the 21st century and there are more checks against that then most are aware of.

    • Monetary policy is very counter intuitive and difficult to understand. The term “money printing” is misleading as what actually happens is more complicated than that. The federal reserve “prints” dollars to buy government bonds at a fixed rate. The government uses the money from these bonds to spend in the federal budget. This is done every year (in varying amounts but sometimes up to $1 trillion) in order to keep inflation at an average rate of around 2%. This is because the supply of dollars must increase in order to keep pace with the increase of population and productivity, otherwise we get deflation which is VERY bad. (This is also how deficit spending works & where the majority of the national debt comes from). During COVID, the federal reserve “printed” $2 trillion. This is offset by two factors. 1) trust in the US dollar worldwide and trust in the fact that the us government is capable of paying back the interest on these bonds over a 30 year period is higher than in nearly any country in the world. 2) since there is soooooo much demand for USD domestically and even more demand overseas, an increase in supply that much should only increase inflation by an extra % or 2. Obviously if the Fed were to do this every year then trust in the dollar would erode, but point being it really isn’t that big of a deal in terms of monetary policy. The inflation we are experiencing now is a result pandemic disruptions. Supply chains are not working at their normal capacity and there is not enough supply to meet demand, therefor prices increase and you get inflation. The Yuan deal will not change anything, Chinese companies would still rather trade in USD and will continue to do so.

      @darksg1295@darksg1295 Жыл бұрын
    • @@darksg1295 And companies have been leaving China due to the repressive anti-foreginer government and it takes time to build new factories and production lines at home or in near by countries like Canada or Mexico etc. This is part of the inflation problem and part of the de-globalization process. This will continue though and get better over time as more production is moved out of China. This is very bad for Communist China though and Peter has said that China is screwed due to Xi's crazy Marxist policies!

  • As far as the global food situation goes, the single biggest thing that can be done is eliminate biofuel mandates and subsidies. For example, 40% of the US corn crop is used to make ethanol. Think of the effect on the food supply if that corn was used for animal feed, or to supplement human diets, or if that farmland is repurposed for growing soybeans.

    • @@keithsmith9054 I know, but what is left after the ethanol is produced is a fraction of what was there before fermentation. All of the starches/carbohydrates are gone, leaving some corn protein (zein), and yeast byproducts.

    • @@brunopadovani7347 The "Ethanol" plants are really corn processing plants. They make a profit on the non-ethanol parts of the corn kernel. CO2, corn oil, dried distillers grains (DDG) - all get sold. If the price of Ethanol goes down and plants continue to operate at reduced margins.

      @keithsmith9054@keithsmith90542 жыл бұрын
    • @@keithsmith9054 I don't doubt that market distorting subsidies and mandates make ethanol plants very profitable. Most studies have shown that ethanol from corn is roughly energy neutral, when you take into accounts the fuel, fertilizer and other inputs used to produce it. So we subtract 40% of America's corn crop (or the acreage used to grow it) from the global food supply, to run a process that is roughly energy neutral. It is a politically financed industry that contributes to starvation in the Third World. No doubt some animal (protein based) feed is produced in the process, but the bulk of the food value (carbohydrates) in corn is converted to ethanol.

      @brunopadovani7347@brunopadovani73472 жыл бұрын
    • @@brunopadovani7347 I agree 100% that we should remove the market distorting subsidies, mandates and regulations. Ethanol isn't a "green energy" at all! Even Canada has removed fuel ethanol subsidies. What I'm telling you is that even without the subsidies, the corn will still end up being used roughly the way it is now. There won't be 40% more human corn acreage. Before Ethanol subsidies, most corn was used for animal feed, just as it is now.
