How to Repair Brake Booster | How to Seal Replacement of Brake Servo/ complete Process

//Uniqueskill // Here's how a brake booster and master cylinder work to stop your vehicle with the press of your brake pedal.
The vacuum booster was invented in 1927 in order to provide a shorter stopping distance. Vacuum boosters provide brake assist for the driver by multiplying the force out of the booster creating more than the force that was used to push on the brake pedal. The booster works by pulling the air out of the booster chamber with a pump or other vacuum source (typically the engine's intake manifold [1]), creating a low-pressure system inside. When the driver steps on the brake pedal, the input rod on the booster is pushed in which lets atmospheric pressure into the booster. This, in turn, pushes the diaphragm toward the master cylinder.
Master cylinder
An animation of how the master cylinder works along with how the force is transferred to the brake calipers
Main article: Master cylinder
The master cylinder is located behind the driver’s side dashboard mounted on the vacuum booster. The pressure inside of the master cylinder is created by a primary and secondary piston. These are pushed by the output rod of the vacuum booster to compress fluid within its primary and secondary chambers (hydraulic pressure). The hydraulic pressure is translated through the brake lines to the brake calipers. When the brake fluid is pushed through the brake lines, the master cylinder chambers are replenished by the reservoir (attached to the top of the master cylinder).
Brake calipers
Main article: Brake calipers
Often used in disc brakes, the brake calipers consists of one to two hollow aluminum or chrome-plated steel pistons (caliper pistons). Brake calipers are one of the most important parts of a vehicle and are essential for your car's ability to stop. The job of the caliper is to slow the car's wheels using the friction they create with metal disks (rotors). They work by taking the pressure given by the master cylinder to force the pistons against the rotor. The development and use of disc-type brakes began in England in the 1890s. The first caliper-type automobile disc brake was patented by Frederick William Lanchester in his Birmingham factory in 1902. In a disc-braking system the rotors are attached to the car's wheels and spin together.

Main article: Drum brake
Another type of power brake installed in automobiles is called the drum brake. This type of brake, in general, will create some friction that will slow down the wheel. How this works is there is a brake cylinder that connects master cylinder to the drum brake via brake lines that transfer pressure from the master cylinder. When the driver pushes the brake pedal with his/her foot, the pistons inside the cylinder will activate. The activation of this piston will allow two brake shoes located within the drum of the brake to expand, thus generating friction to slow down and stop the wheel. Usually, this brake is located in the rear wheels of the vehicle, while the disk brake is located at the front of the vehicle. A car may also have only drum brakes or disc brakes both front and rear.

  • You guys are champions, everyone here says don't do this, it requires special tools or it's too difficult just buy a new one for some incredibly outrageous price. I'm inspired and going out right now and taking mine apart. Mahalo Nui Updating for you, I did it! Took it apart and quickly saw the failure and was able to gently manipulate it back to it's seated position. A little more tricky putting it back together then you make it look, guess that's an experience thing. Patience and confidence gained from your video got me there. Thanks so much guys you saved me $300 USD. and more importantly I gained another ability making one less thing that I have to rely on some greedy corporate slim for and that's priceless. 🤙

  • Should be dry inside. Most likely the Master Cylinder (MC) piston leaked to suck brake fluid into the vacuum booster. That is for those thin pancake-body booster where an O-ring seals vacuum between MC and booster. Thicker boosters, like in older cars (I've seen in even late 1990's Chrysler cars) have a bellows seal at the output so any MC leak will drip out before the booster (usually a drain hole). I think he is just washing the parts in water, since glycol brake fluid (DOT 3, 4, 5.1) is miscible. People say the glycol fluid can damage the booster rubber parts. If you use silicone fluid (DOT 5), I doubt any damage since benign to rubbers. Hardest part in rebuilding a booster is sourcing new parts like the rubber diaphragm. This one is a Bendix style with a crimped cover. Midland-Ross are easier to disassemble since use a V-band clamp to secure the two shells.

Also, never wash rubber parts in petrol. That diaphragm wont last long after its nice long soak in that refreshing bath of petrol.

But overall, it's great. The cup holders fold in if you want. My granddaughter loves it and is so excited to have outgrown her car seat. I am constantly reminded that she now has a booster seat, not a car seat. Will probably buy another for a different vehicle.

    • I'm a former tech of many machines (5k repaired), do my own automotive work & dropped out of a manufacturing program. Replacing parts often makes more sense in the long run. Especially something relatively cheap with rubber parts in it like a brake booster. I bought a new master cylinder (40 dollars) & new brake booster (75 dollars) for my own vehicle because the remanufactured units were the same price. Some things should NOT be rebuilt.

    • Unless you mining and forging ore and materials into the end product, you are a "Replacer". Its at what level you want to stop the process of FIXING and just replace.

    • @@carlosgaspar8447 Vacuum brake boosters are not supposed to have any fluid in them. If fluids are in them it can easily degrade the rubber parts within.
