The PERFECT GIFT at NO COST (off-grid, Alaska)

Known as a Viking Chair, a Stargazer Chair, an African Chair, a Bog Chair, or simply an X Chair, this ancient design is as beautiful as it is functional. The wood timbers used for this chair were salvaged from down by the shore of the lake. There was significant rot in parts of the boards and I had to search for pieces good enough to use for my project. But a chair like this must come from the past and have a story to tell. It may look new, but it is already very old and wise.
Peace to you all from Alaska

  • Great seeing that beautiful wood repurposed vs. being burned. Between the bar and the chair I am starting to feel the need to dust off some of my tools once my kitchen remodel is done. Thanks for sharing.

  • Master Craftsman, the schematics/blue prints are stored between the ears, under the hat. The wood will tell you what it wants to become, and in the end we are enriched with form, function and beauty unlocked. Amazing!

    • @@ThisIsMyAlaska Hi Gale, little input from the wife (ie, accountant, manager, secretary and life long companion)! I viewed the video with her during daily morning coffee communion, see was amazed. Normally I get the "honey dew list" at this time, you know "honey don't forget to do-this" and "you need to do-that". Well any way, I told her "just dropped the wood in a pile at his feet, and watch the magic happen"! She told me "yes, I can see that, but, it a chair I can get in and out of without help"! We have a pile of Adirondack chairs (resin, wicker, wooden, padded and un-padded) we both can't get in and out of without a fight. Well, plenty of seating for our guests who show up.....Oh bother! God bless, smashing the "thumbs up" button (as usual).

  • I love watching your videos and they are, in an odd way very relaxing to watch on my HDTV. My father, like you, was a master craftsman and he pretty much did it all. He was an auto mechanic and his profession was rebuilding and repairing transmissions, but at heart, he found great joy in carpentry work, electrical and plumbing. Sadly he passed away six years ago around Fathers Day of cancer and me watching your videos often reminds me of the times I watched him as a kid crafting something, so for me it's sentimental for many reasons. There was never a problem he couldn't solve, whether it be mechanical, carpentry,,electrical, plumbing or just simple daily life, he was the problem solver at the 11th hour. You and him would've had a lot to talk about. Keep up the awesome work and I look forward to your videos every week. God Bless and stay safe.

  • We watch KZhead on our TV instead of the computer, so we don't see the description. However, we have been playing a game with your thumbnails. We try to only look long enough to see that it's you, and then we try to guess what you're up to as the show progresses. The bar -- well, we were cold and hot! But I had to share the guesses we came up with tonight. In order they are a stop sign, a T for Tanya (or Tammy), a guitar, a really thick pizza peel, and then we settled on a chair, and you weren't even finished making it yet. Thank you for the laugh! Have a happy weekend, y'all!

  • Beautiful chair!! The expression: "at NO COST" is very subjective! In this chair is part of your soul, the work of the master and the age of the tree... From the pieces of the remaining wood, I would cut out two versatile triangles and attach them to the base of the chair for more stability. In the future, they can be given an oval shape and the finished composition will turn out ... Thank you for the opportunity to watch your magnificent work against the backdrop of fantastic views of nature !!
