The SILENT TREATMENT (Off Grid Alaska)

I think spring has finally arrived (at least the mosquitos have anyway). Along with the warmer weather come frequent rain storms. We have always enjoyed the storms here in the mountains. The colors of the sky are spectacular and are accompanied by thunder and mists. But this year we are feeling the urgency of getting the roof waterproofed on the old shop, a task we hope to accomplish within the next two weeks or so. By the time you see this video we will be back up at the cabin working on the back section of the old shop roof. See you there!
I am planning to release two videos next week. The first will be on Wednesday and the second on Friday as usual. Throughout this summer I am planning to take you on some adventures as we harvest our salmon, moose and berries. I think you will enjoy it as much as we do.

Everyone is busy with business: - the birds build their nest, Gale and Tanya too .... Most of all, I liked the two happy heads towering over the finished roof section !!

  • Week to week that country just transforms like working a set of Venetian blinds. Its quite dramatic. Mot so much like the previous cabin project that Drox and Stella helped Gill to build. That was just blue sky and blizards :). I continue to be impressed with your cheerful (and hopeful?) progress on the property. I had a small ladder fall the same week as Gill’s broken rib moment. The bruising on that is slowly fading, but my arm and shoulder are just not right still. Watching him swing those beams around and reaching about makes me wonder if he’s a pain-junkie. I’d give my left arm to have a fully functional left arm just now! Love the Buster Keaton version this week. I’ll take that as a reply to my question a few weeks ago about the “Just one week” Keaton classic. You folks are a tonic. Bless.

  • Less talk more work! God idea to get that roof dried in before rain storms hit. Then you can relax a bit and chat us up. I imagine you'll get that fish wheel working this summer? I watched a documentary on a Boston transplant to Tanana, Alaska. That's what they used to fish for salmon. Timing is everything. That seems to be the case with a lot of things in Alaska. A storm's coming in, the tide's coming in, the fish are running, etc. It's always some force beyond one's control that keeps everyone on their toes. Alaska sure is different from what I'm used to. I bet Stella is looking forward to the salmon run! Tanya chose a spatula to remove a hotdog from the grill ... Stella saw that coming! Good job mom! 🤣

    • Hello Lucille. I really enjoyed reading your comments today. These fishwheels are on the bank in the village of Tanana. I spend the day there last week, working on the school building. The village is like a post card. It is a place out of past, 50 years ago. So still and silent. Not many people live there now. Soon those fishwheels will be pushed out into the current where they will turn, scooping up the salmon that are pushing their way upriver towards the hundreds of tributaries from where they were hatched over 7 years ago. Peace

It is beyond belief for us here - even in Perthshire, the gateway to the Highlands in Scotland - that there should still be lying snow.
