The return of serve: TENNIS MASTERCLASS by Patrick Mouratoglou, EPISODE 1

2024 ж. 25 Сәу.
1 039 512 Рет қаралды

In this Tennis Masterclass, I talk about the most important shot in the game. The return. Do you want to return like Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, or Andy Murray? Or maybe some of the best on the women’s side, like Simona Halep or Iga Swiatek? Do you want to know how to take advantage of your opponent’s serve and get in their mind?
If so, I have the right strategies and techniques for you.
The goal of the return of serve is to neutralize your opponent by engaging in their first service ball and attacking the second in order to take control of the point.
In this video, I break down each aspect of the return. From your position, grip, split step, contact point, aim, and anticipation… I can assure you that you will leave this video a better returner. Let’s go!
Chapters:
0:00 - Intro
0:38 - Feet position, legs
1:00 - Upper body, racket position
1:52 - Which grip to choose?
3:19 - The ideal position to return
3:57 - Two ways to do a split step
4:36 - When to do a split step?
5:06 - Where you should stand?
7:09 - Return isn’t a normal shot
7:52 - Compact and short swing
9:02 - Guide the ball
10:17 - Don’t hold your grip too tight
10:41 - The best way to hit the ball inside the court
11:05 - Where to aim on your return?
13:09 - How to anticipate your opponent’s serve?
15:16 - Return of second serve
16:38 - Three ways to hit an agressive return on the second serve
17:08 - How to return a kick serve?
18:14 - Return on different surfaces
20:26 - Merci beaucoup!

  • As a coach who has worked 20 years on the WTA and ITF tour. This is the best example of simplifying things that are so difficult. For every sentence he says, he is condensing hours of research and analysis, meanwhile making it look easy. Awesome presentation, Patrick 👏

  • Played competitive tennis my whole life and played D1 in the US back in HS before going to a college that killed its tennis program my freshman year. I've watched world class coaches give lessons on returns, and I have to say this is by far the best return class I've ever seen. I feel like if I had this resource available to me back in the day, I would have made huge gains on my return game. Great work as always by coach Patrick -- keep it up!

  • This is by far one of the best tutorial on return of serves delivered in such concise, succinct fashion! Straight to the point and easy to understand even for early learners of the game - no wonder folks like Rune and Gauff are improving so drastically! Ps: next up, please could we have a tutorial on defending / attacking high balls. Merci beaucoup!

    • I will let Patrick make the video, but to get you started, make sure you're moving your feet forward and timing that ball off the bounce at around chest to shoulder height. This allows you to level out your swing and flatten the trajectory of the ball because the net will not be in the way when you are contacting the ball well above the net's height.
