    • Throttle control is what makes foiling possible. You start at a slower motor speed and get the feeling for the angle you have to set the board/broom according to the speed of the motor. With just full throttle this will not work straight away. Nevertheless, it looks really nice and fun 🎉 Good work!

  • Seeing how he kept having to pulse the throttle to keep at the right height, I think the next step would be to fine-tune the speed control to find the sweet spot and have that be the default speed.

    @samthestache8@samthestache88 ай бұрын
  • I've gotten a taste and I want more. I just wanna see this concept get pushed as far a possible! Get to the point where it doesn't dip unless the rider wants it. Get to the point where you can maintain a steady speed, accelerate/decelerate, and turn easily. Get off without having to crash. Can you make it taller and is there a way to move up and down?

    @darikis3437@darikis34378 ай бұрын
  • Oooo nice run at the end! Having to modulate the throttle to maintain level travel did give me an idea though; what if you incorporated a sensor that can increase/decrese throttle based on pitch. Once engaged, that might be able to automate throttle modulation and keep it above the water.

    @Dakiraun@Dakiraun8 ай бұрын
  • This was so sick! Well done, team! You've probs thought of it, but adding sensors and a controller to maintain the ideal 'lift' would be sick; Assisted riding - then you can safely smash some Quidditch! Love your content! Rad stuff, well produced.

    • This would actually be really neat - you could actually do things while flying on a broom 😃

      @eliomernk7058@eliomernk70588 ай бұрын
    • I was highly suprised this wasnt done. A simply gyro sensor setup that adjusts throttle to maintain the broom being level fore/aft, with a cutoff switch with a wrist band key to prevent it running away like waverunners use.

      @MattWeber@MattWeber8 ай бұрын
  • First lightsabers, now flying brooms. Hacksmith is doing a revolution to technology. And yes, while this broom is on the same level of technicality as first lightsaber prototypes that Hacksmith did, there's still a room to improve.

    • First thing they should do imo, is some kind of controller that modulates the power for the user, ensuring a reasonable angle of attack instead of an unstable wobbly mess doomed to fail. Or, I guess, simply adding ailerons to the fins would work too. Depends on whether they want to solve their issues through hardware or software. Hardware (ailerons) would definitely be the simplest, but also needs doing hardware instead of software - which I guess is right up the hacksmith's alley,

      @feha92@feha928 ай бұрын
    • @@feha92 Honestly, I'm not a tech guy, I have no idea about mechanical stuff. All i can say is that they need to improve the controller. On the last attempt you could see that to make it go stable, the controller needed to be switched back and forth. They need to make a controller that would need to be turned on once and would give enough power to make it stable.

      @inspector_beyond@inspector_beyond8 ай бұрын
    • @@inspector_beyond Yeah that is what I were talking about. Either solve it in software (+ sensors) to make it so you can pick a speed/height (I assume those correlates) with the lever-input, or solve it in hardware by giving it ailerons (+sensors) that control the pitch (to get a consistent height, no matter speed - well, assuming it's fast enough to not just sink, of course).

  • One man sailing boat foiling has a device at the bow, that has a float or ski with linkages to a hinged foil. The float would be set at the required altitude of the vessel while the foil is set at neutral flying the vessel. If the boat is too low, the float lifts, pulls the linkages, increases the angle of attack, boat rises. Opposite for too high. It is an automatic attitude finder. You could set the power and the device would do the adjustments to fly.

Meaining: - No flying, so bicicles or scooters should act as brooms. - Quaffle and goal marks work the same. - Snitch needs to have the magic worked out by tech. Maybe some small drone that can be hand-catched? - Bludgers need to have the magic worked out by tech. Maybe also some drones that can be bludged around and would chase players? 3D would required actually flying, which seems a bit off the table for now... :(

  • At 9:20 it looks like real freaking magic. As soon as the wood sled falls off, and that broom wants to take flight. It almost looked 'too good'. Almost got goose bumps there.

  • Fantastic job as always y'all! The one problem I see is the motor controller - It's no wonder it was so hard to ride properly with only an on-off switch for speed control... If the motor can support variable speed, something like a paramotor throttle (hand grip with a lever) would make fine control *much* easier, and most likely make takeoff & riding much easier. I'd love to see this revisited with a whole water-based Quidditch match!

  • Interesting bit of historical context for the broomstick: some sources indicate that it was a euphemism for riding the Devil's joystick, as witches were said to trade sexual favors for their magic.

  • Pretty sure that with a bit of software you could make this thing keep the right altitude for longer, like it's done in drones. Probably not that easy to do, but would be awesome to just hit full power and stay up in the air all the way.
