  • Striking has been the dominant type of hand to hand combat for thousands of years. The UFC popularized MMA with a rule set that favors grappling and wrestling. Effective strikes are limited and often barred. There is a discussion on banning side kicks to the knee. Bam all effective strikes. The UFC bans small joint locks. A simple tactic that neutralizes a lot of grappling. MMA rules, favor grappling. But striking, is the superior form of fighting. And it’s been proven multiple times, by people like Alex Pereira, who are strikers with minimal wrestling and grappling skills. Striking is the most important skill in a fight

That punch barley landed and it knocked hill out cold. Imagine if it landed flush. If Pereira fights Tom at heavyweight he will win if tom stands up with him. The way tom wins is by taking Pereira down and either ground and pound or a submission. But I think Tom's ego will want to stand against Pereira and this will be his downfall.

    • It's not just ego, beating Pereira on the feet would also just be a massive boost to them as fighters and their personal brand. It's one thing if someone fights Alex and smothers him on the ground the whole time, it's basically what people expect. But if you can be the guy that beats Pereira on the feet, that'd instantly elevate you into being a superstar. The man who beat the monster at their own game. For Izzy it didn't really count since he was already a dominant champ and both him and Pereira are basically considered to be in their own tier of striking apart from everyone else, but for everyone else it's a chance to plant their flag.

My response was always "strike. WTF, he is a boxer FFS. As long as his power shot lands before you clasps your hands, the rest does not matter" And we all saw just how fast he is against Nnganou. And here we are, having a similar debate about Alex Pereira. And even if ALex were to face an elite wrestler, foot work goes a long way. Ducking under to shoot or level change can be very dangerous against a striker with crisps technique, high level of fight IQ, and pin point precise strike. The whole point of MMA was never to see what styles mesh together, but to see what style is the best or has the best application/applied the best by a fighter.

Anderson Silva, Chuck Liddell, Israel, Adesanya… Alex Pereira is just the final form. He’s literally built perfectly for a fighter. Exactly like Jon Jones and Sean O’Malley and GSP and Even Conor McGregor for featherweight. Super tall with a strong chest and skinny arms and leg legs makes it really easy to make weight and Use that size for under hooks and to counter takedowns. They don’t need know how to wrestle, just to keep you away from them and then under hook and toss you when you try to shoot. • I saw it from a mile away. Jamahal hasn't beaten anyone and had no business in that ring with Pereira. Jon Jones left a power vacuum when he left. Filling his spot in an aging division led to a truly novel sequence of events which let a 40+ year-old man ascend to the title. Jiri put an end to that nonsense - but he was fast-tracked to the title. Similarly, Jiri gets injured, leaving ANOTHER power vacuum in a talent-starved division. Desperate for an actual contender, Jamahal was fast-tracked to the title - which he got by beating up an old man. Tough guy, big accomplishment... If the UFC had enough warm bodies for a legit top-10 at LH, Jamahal would be a gatekeeper. Now the division has someone who's an actual champion.

    • LHW has never been as weak as it has now, imagine prime Gus, DC and Jones vs these guys. Hell if Gus was in the prime now he would have 5-6 title defenses now, he was just unlucky to be in DC and Jones era lol

    • I know Glover was near the end of his career, but let's not pretend like he didn't make Jiri work for it. Probably would've won too if he kept it on the feet at the end when he had Jiri rocked.

    • Yeah I think LHW is just a really weak division right now and that's a big part of the reason Pereira has done so well. A guy like Jamahal Hill being a title contender is a bad sign for the overall health of the division.

  • I love Chaels history lessons so much. Throwing shine on Marco freakin Ruas like that. What a throwback fighter. Why was he so relevant? He was one of the first guys to throw it ALL together. Could he grapple? Hell yeah. Did he have subs? Sure did. Could he strike? With the best of them. Did he have a backup plan against 300 lb Paul Varelens? Yep! Foot stomps all night! Goddamn what a glorious sport. To watch the evolution from Gracie to Ruas to Coleman to Liddell to the spider to GSP to JBJ to Mac to O malley and on and on. We truly are witnessing evolution in real time. Great observation Uncle!

  • That is because UFC hand picks the top guys at certain weight classes to be strikers. There grapplers who could’ve easily beaten Adesanya. And Also, Periera. The UFC needs certain weight classes to have a striking Champ. Because they need to appeal to the fan who likes striking. There are 3 fans, one that likes striking, one the likes grappling, and a third that likes both/mix. You need to have a champ at all 3 in order to have a product for all 3 fan bases.

  • What makes huge difference in mma compared to striking only is how the fighter crosses the void or no mans land between them. Think about boxing they can put there foot a cross the void lean back, but mma you are in a good take down stance. As we fight with no gloves at all on one has to control the hands contact force, so void stays more empty, an the fighter has limit contact.
