Man, that was really one of the best women's finals in recent years. So intense, high quality and great efforts from both players.
Both her parents are Polish, athletes who came to Denmark in the 1980s, she has bravery in her genes!
Knowing now that she'd soon retire, I am so glad that Caro got her grandslam. What an incredible player and so well deserved.
So happy for Caro. People were talking a lot when she first got to world number 1 years ago, saying a world number 1 needs a grandslam. Well she finally got hers. Amazing battle.

I will always be happy for Halep when she wins. She is always so graceful in defeat, always gives her opponent respect. Very humble player and even when she beat my GOAT Serena I was happy for Halep. Hope she continues to have a prosperous career!
Halep is an amazing player
One of the top 10, perhaps top 5 best womens slam finals of all time. And to think, both saved match points en route to the final. Both had WILD roads. Woz in R2 recovered from a seemingly insurmountable deficit 1-5* 15-40*. Jana Fett was no more than a couple millimetres away from hitting an ace on MP. Why Fett didnt challenge boggles my mind. Halep saved MP in TWO matches. R3 and the SF. Won both in overtime (beyond 6-6) deciding sets. I heard Simona ended up in hospital with heat stroke not too long after this final (roof was open). No wonder the roof was closed for the mens final the following evening...

A grand slam singles title at the Australian Open, an event won (3) three consecutive times by one of her tennis idols, Martina Hingis, a (5) five time grand slam singles champion. Caroline Wozniacki turned pro in 2005 and won her first grand slam singles title in 2018, that's 13 years. Caroline Wozniacki has been ranked #1 and has numerous lucrative endorsement deals. But all those accolades are earned by any athlete no matter what their grand slam achievements are. Nobody has control of endorsement deals. And it's nobody's money except for the endorser. Caroline Wozniacki's perseverance paid off. The pressure is off. To all those tabloid jerks, a win is a win. And pressure to those that haven't won. Wozniacki retired after two years in 2020 since her 2018 Australian Singles victory. It's a shame that tennis tabloids and negative fans have such loud voices. Social media compounds negativity, but social media also amplifies positive voices and positivity as well. To all athletes, keep it up. Kick the negative voices out and let the positive voices in! This is what sport supposed to be, a place for positivity to gather and may the best player win!
Objective criticism is a compound of positive and negative voices. A person is not ready to be athlete, no matter how talented that person is, if negative criticism can't be embraced.
@@magnetmac1 Constructive criticisms, but NOT flat out saying, "I don't like you," for no apparent reason other than pure bias. Yes, anyone can be bias, but not to a point where someone is literally being vicious and negative. Why do people even bother if they don't like? Makes no sense except to be negative like in a vicious way. Not everyone desires the same athlete, so why direct negative energies to that athlete? I don't like Lindsay Davenport, but I do appreciate her game, but I don't say something vicious online. I did criticized Davenport for being bias in her tennis commentary. Davenport's commentating to me is often unhelpful. Like the "Ooo, and ahhhhh." Like really?! I need to hear those commentaries? But I don't say, I hate Davenport or dislike her for no reason. Furthermore, if I hear Davenport commentating, then I just don't watch. Simple as that. But I don't need to go to that extra mile to create negative energies to deliver misery to someone. That's wrong in all levels. No one should cause misery to someone. If a person doesn't like to eat apples, then eat oranges. I don't care, just stop eating apples.
@@magnetmac1 Constructive criticisms are not negative if that person was not attacking that person directly. Constructive criticisms are comments such as change racquets, try a different string, try different string tensions, etc.
@@magnetmac1 And no one has the right to insinuate taking away endorsements, etc., just because a random person says so. Endorsements are not made by the fans and/or total strangers. Granted the fans can help endorsements but fans do NOT contribute to the terms of the contract. Often athletes are endorsed by a brand because that athlete stands for something. From inspiration to work ethics.
@@magnetmac1 And it is negativity that has caused sports journalists to advocate for age restrictions. That is why the WTA Tour is no longer dominated by teenagers. The days of Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, and Martina Hingis are gone. Had Serena Williams and Venus Williams been able to play without age restrictions perhaps they might have won more titles? Who knows. Serena might have already won 24 or more grand slam singles titles. I do have a problem with the age restrictions. I don't believe one athlete that being Jennifer Capriati should be the reason to spearhead the genesis of age restrictions. The negativity from fans, and the criticisms from journalists have finally made the WTA change their policy. Players are restricted from play by the number of tournaments players can participate until they reach 18 years of age. 17 and under are restricted to a limited amount of tournaments. That is unfortunate for we fans as female athletes hit their peak from 15 to 18. With 13, and 14 being their preparation years. Do we see 40 year old Olympic gymnasts being real contenders for gold? NO! Female Olympic figure skaters are often 15 or 16 to be real medal contenders; especially, with the quad jumps. So, are you happy now? Really? Because when Graf and Seles had their rivalry, it was some of the best Women's Tennis matches ever. Granted Seles was stabbed by a crazy fan, but there will never be a Seles ever again or a Martina Hingis as their best years were their teenage years. Even Steffi's calendar year Golden slam was won when Graf was a teenager.
At the time I was rooting for Halep but in hindsight I am glad Wozniacki won. This was basically her final big chance to win a Slam while Halep had more opportunities to come (which she took).
We have to admire the superb physical conditioning of those two female athletes. Not only is tennis the only sport that uses all the muscles of the body, it is the best training for producing the best good-looking and most fit female bodies in the human species. Halep and Wozniacki are two excellent specimens. Swimmers also are very beautiful and fit, but tennis practice creates more functional bodies able to move with strength and endurance in all directions, even jumping high into the air or crouching down to your heels.
Some of Halep's winners in this match are unbelievable. Same for both girls actually. Quality match. It amazes me that some people call players like Caroline or Simona weak. It leads me to believe these people are clueless. I think Simona has a ridiculous amount of power for someone of her size. Some of these winners are incredible and both girls serving great.

@@outsidethepyramid Not weak. But they're referred to as pushers, which is a terrible generalization, especially for Simona. People think she just makes balls. She's an aggressive counterpuncher looking to turn defense to offense.
Caroline is such a great scrapper. She plays out more points than most females. One of the better matches I've seen of womens tennis but you wont see it on a list. Congrats to her for finally winning one.
Wozniacki will always be my favorite player! She’s hard working, an amazing fighter, has a great smile, and is a kind and positive person. I’ve modeled my tennis game from hers and I pride myself in consistency and running down every ball like her the best I can, she inspired me to go to a two handed backhand which I can use as a weapon now, I used to use a one handed backhand and could only slice it. I was so happy when she won this I felt that I had won too and I remember watching at 6 in morning and just cheering and celebrating with her! She deserved a Grand Slam win for all the accomplishments she achieved in her career.

I was happy for Caroline here but I was so so sad for Halep... and then at the French Sloan Stephens has her on the Ropes too... that was an amazing comeback. I was sad for Sloan there because Sloan is such a wonderful and beautiful sportswoman, but happy for Halep. Those are matches you hate to see anyone lose. and then of court I was SUPER Happy Halep defeated Serena for Wimbledon!!! That is the way you want to win Wimbledon, by defeating the GOAT. In this match, I was torn between Wozniacki and Halep, Instinctively I knew that Wozniacki had to get the breakthrough here, She was not going to get many more chances at a Major, Halep In my Opinion....WAS going to get more chances at a Major.... I think that the difference In this final was simply that Halep had to win classic matches against Lauren Davies, And then AngelIque Kerber....I think these matches caused Halep to "Not have the legs" in the 3rd set....Wozniacki was able to get the victory.... I wish Caroline Wozniacki was still playing....But at Least She was able to get that major win before retirement, Halep lost this final yes....But I knew that She was going to have more chances at majors and She eventually broke through at the French Open. In Closing, Thank You to Australian Open TV for posting the full match on KZhead so that fans from around that world could enjoy watching tennis at It's best!!!! :)
Totally agree about the classic matches taking the legs out of Halep. Especially against Angie, I do feel if she hadn't had a lapse at the end of the first set to give Angie 3 games to give her some hope, or converts the break points at 4-all in the second set, she wouldn't had to use up so much physical and emotional energy to win. That would have left her more fresh for the final. It's still amazing that with almost no energy, she still found a way to force a third set and went up the break at 4-3 before she finally seemed to hit the wall.

If so and FYI she just lost 6-0, 6-2 to CW in Singapore and so lost the last 3 matches between them. Haleps last win prior to the AO 2018 final was in 2015. Statistics don't win tennismatches I know but there was a trend

How they are perceived by people is mostly dependent upon the recipient's bias - in your case it feeds your opinion of "notorious arrogance and poor sportsmanship" - others see it as unwise comment from a very frustrated top athlete But no - she should not have said that - even if it's true. Makarova never did very good in singles
During the match I prayed so hard for Wozniacki, thanks God she won this Grand Slam

amazing to watch Halep offer a big grin in the third set, though down 4-5, with Wozinacki at set point. What character!!!!!
That victory has meant the world for Danish tennis. We now have Clara Tauson on the ladies side and Holger Rune on the male side. And poor Novak some time Wednesday morning (CET) - so close to a genuine Grand Slam only to be denied it by a junior player in the first round

Halep would have the AO in 2018 if she hadn’t played that record breaking long match against Davis and then this long grueling semi final and Wozniacki would not not have won her only slam. As a Halep fan even though she didn’t win - this slam was her finest moment.
I wish we could have heard the grunts and squeals of both players more clearly. They add an emotional coloring to the game, like a bass in music, it's a shame that they've been so deftly muted by the technicians to the point of near silence. It takes some of the flavor off the spectacle. Pity.

Funny how that reporter can figure out pronouncing the "I" in Si-mona correctly each time, but INSISTS on pronouncing the "I" in Caroli-ne WRONG each time!?!! ( it is the SAME "I" sound for BOTH!!). At least many reporters quite quickly figured out pronouncing the Holger Rune name correctly. It is pronounced Ru-ne ( TWO syllables), and not that ugly sounding "roon" way, some English speakers still say it!

What an incredible hard fought match. 2:53:35 Why on earth is the umpire getting incorrectly involved there. I think it upset Simona at the most critical time. She served her first double fault after that. Really bad umpiring.

I reckon that tennis should remove the rule where the serve should be replayed when the ball touches the net and still goes over the net. That play should continue even when the ball touches the net and goes over to the receiver's side. Up to the receiver to adjust if ball falls short on their side. It is a stupid and outdated rule that needs to be removed. My friends and I don't apply this rule when we play because it's not practical and it's outdated. More time on hitting the ball, and less on the serving.

Simona halep failed a wada drug test for a band substance in October 2022, and is suspended 2023 from playing until she can prove her innocence. She is a good player and hope this ends well for her, if Innocent.
