We tweet, we like, and we share- but what are the consequences of our growing dependence on social media? As digital platforms increasingly become a lifeline to stay connected, Silicon Valley insiders reveal how social media is reprogramming civilization by exposing what’s hiding on the other side of your screen.
Netflix.com/thesocialdilemma
ABOUT THE SOCIAL DILEMMA
The world has long recognized the positive applications of social media, from its role in empowering protesters to speak out against oppression during the Arab Spring uprisings almost a decade ago, to serving an instrumental role in fighting for equity and justice today. And in 2020, during an astonishing global pandemic, social media has become our lifeline to stay in touch with loved ones, as well as proving to be an asset for mobilizing civil rights protests. However, the system that connects us also invisibly controls us. The collective lack of understanding about how these platforms actually operate has led to hidden and often harmful consequences to society-consequences that are becoming more and more evident over time, and consequences that, the subjects in The Social Dilemma suggest, are an existential threat to humanity.
The Social Dilemma is a powerful exploration of the disproportionate impact that a relatively small number of engineers in Silicon Valley have over the way we think, act, and live our lives. The film deftly tackles an underlying cause of our viral conspiracy theories, teenage mental health issues, rampant misinformation and political polarization, and makes these issues visceral, understandable, and urgent. Through a unique combination of documentary investigation and entertaining narrative drama, award-winning filmmakers Jeff Orlowski (Chasing Ice, Chasing Coral) and Larissa Rhodes (Chasing Coral) have once again exposed the invisible in a manner that is both enlightening and harrowing as they disrupt the disrupters by unveiling the hidden machinations behind everyone’s favorite social media and search platforms.
The film features compelling interviews with high-profile tech whistleblowers and innovation leaders including Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology; the co-inventor of the Facebook “Like” button, Justin Rosenstein; Tim Kendall, former President of Pinterest and former Director of Monetization at Facebook; Cathy O’Neil, author of Weapons of Math Destruction; Rashida Richardson, Director of Policy at the AI Now Institute, and many others. Demonstrating how social media affects consumers on a personal level, these fascinating insider insights are seamlessly woven into a captivating narrative, including Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men), that illuminates the very real consequences these seemingly innocent technologies can have on our everyday lives.

I believe that at the latest after seeing documentations like “The social dilemma”, we should come to the conclusion that social media as we know them have ruined the whole concept of social networking, which could be one of the most useful forms of communication. - If it would be structured properly. The most popular platforms have been optimized only to monetize our need to socialize online, our creativity, our expertise, our ambitions to create valuable communities, that maybe couldn’t exist in real life.
@@tracianjulianus4148 Right. Facebook and instagram do absolutely not reflect a real society. People are doing there things they could never do in other places (like hate speech, distorting realities, etc.). And probably it’s exactly for this reason that they are doing them on facebook or instagram. I have no idea how they will ever change. Deleting our accounts better sooner than later is probably a very good idea.

We're not completely clueless. "a lot of people don't know" - they do. They just dont care. We "figured this out" years ago. People just dont have the foresight to see the implications, even after explained to them. This docu is about 10 years late for most everyone, and 20 years late for a few.
They know but don't care they're being tracked. But they don't know and even deny that they're being manipulated.
@@ForAnAngel We've been manipulated for a looong time. Diamond ADs went out in what? The 30s? Got Milk? Was way before the internet much less social media. This is just a new tool to use. If you didn't connect the previous dot to this one... then i just don't know what to tell you.
No. Some people don't care, and others are NOT aware of the possibilities. We really need to stop giving large swaths of people credit for critical thinking they don't possess. It isn't simply being ignored. If anything, the internet and social media have shown to those able to see that people aren't as smart as we assume they should be.
Some people definitely know, but not all. And even if they are aware there honestly isn’t much they can do since it is practically everywhere. For example: Google is the most popular search engine out there and they’ve purposely made it convenient to do that. Why do you think they have a google classroom, google docs, google sites, google photos, gmail, and so many other digital platforms?
You're giving people way too much credit. My friend's mom posts constantly on Facebook about how the government is out to get her with microchips and track her, as if she isn't already being tracked. You may have self awareness, but most people don't.

95% of the harm, at least. It's why there is no hope for this world.
I'm surprised that people are just now figuring this out. You dont have to be on Facebook or any other platform. Parents dont have to give their cell phones. They can enroll them in sports, arts classes, after school programs and do any number of things to help them interact socially. Our data isn't being mined by social media alone. It started with television ratings and advertising. There's also store cards that help grocery stores print coupons at the register for products you like, brand loyalty cards, radio advertising etc. I remember wanting Nike shoes as a kid because of a TV ad I saw. It took forever to save up enough to get them. That's when I got my first loyalty card too. I got a punch everytime I shopped there. When I spent "X" amount I got a discount. When I wore the shoes I valued every complement "like" etc. So, we needn't act like it's a new concept. We just need to hit the off button a little more often and find a tree to climb or a club to join.
We are living in the Matrix. Not as a battery but as an ATM.

Social media is a huge part of it as well as the rapid growth of technology. I lived in the era of nokia/ flip phones and people were not upgrading their gear every year then. You’re not the only one. I honestly don’t know how people didn’t know this before. Most social media apps on my phone have notifications turned off, and I have such a small interest in them, when I do see a notification that’s not a text from from a friend, I usually ignore it. I don’t get the advertisement thing. Has anyone ever seen an ad for something that made them want to buy it? That hasn’t happened to me since I still played with toys, and thought happy meals were the best thing in the world.
I'm 18 idk if just me but I don't use tik tok, I'm not active on Instagram. I'm just glad I didn't build my life on social media. I'm active on other platforms such as reddit and KZhead but I use it to learn new things every day. Social media is just like everything in life. It's what you make of it and how often you consume it. If you're using social media to fill a void in your life it's going to destroy your self esteem. But if you use it the right way in moderation like for instance, knowing what's going on, learning new skills, asking for help on a assignment, etc ... It's the most helpful tool ever. When it's taken excessively, the problems settle in.
You my friend are very mature for your age. Time is the most valuable asset we've got in our hands. We have to choose how we use our time wisely and stand out in the crowd. I barely use social media to anything but stuff that aggregates value to my life. My instagram account is active just to get in touch with people through the inbox. Facebook I use to check out groups about career topics, living abroad. I can spend ages not accessing any social networks. KZhead is the only one I access on a daily basis due to a course I am enrolled in, which has its videos uploaded on KZhead.
All the temptations are there trying to penetrate into your mind. Most people are lured into those traps. Auto scrolling feeds, the reward system of likes. That's where the danger is. Those features where designed in a way to activate the same areas in the brain as when you're gambling and doing drugs. They are all very addictive. First and foremost, your auto control and priorities in life have to be well clear in your mind, otherwise you will be just another social media zombie wandering through useless feeds. I think it is time to call it a day. Enough of KZhead hahaha
@@gabemvp I agree. That's why the atmosphere of social media has become toxic. Social media should be a place where we all connect with each other and make ever lasting memories. But unfortunately no, this is not the case in todays world. It's now a competition between who can get the most followers, likes, views, comments, etc. People on social media have created this whole fake profile of themselves just for validation and acceptance from society. A wise man once said, " you only see what they choose you to see". I have found this quote to be very true because the amount of people I've met in real life who were instafamus, tik tok famous, etc... were not happy. They use social media as a stratagem to fill the holes in their life. It's really sad. Thank you for contributing.
In my country we have a saying that everything in excess is bad, and that definitely goes for social media. I agree with every single word of you, man.
Don't hate me, but tiktok is so damn toxic. I really hate it.
All social media did was uncover (because it’s always been like this) how selfish mankind is whether we want to admit it or not, and shows the extent people will go for individual notoriety or status (what the new people call clout). The more it unfolds about human behaviors, the more the creators have to use against society for their gain, which once again, is selfishness. 🤷🏾♂️

All these people in the comments calling out Netflix. ...Instead of admitting you are way too addicted to change your behavior. You blame Netflix for turning the mirror on you. Just turn you notifications off. We all know we should anyaways. Stop pretending -my last post
Well said
They should be thankful with Netflix cuz its showing us this and people is waking up.
Its not blaming on netflix, is just bait, something your entitled old self cant understand lol
I’m saying🤣🤣🤝
Yes, it’s stupid. Netflix is just like any channel on tv, only through the internet. It’s not social media. And no, they are not trying to control your minds.
I am a nutrition professor and I am telling my students to watch this documentary, and how it connects to their diet, nutrition and health. Scary stuff. Very, very troubling.
This documentary is eye-opening enough to make the viewers at least have a second thought about indulging in social media
Netflix made a self report, he's the imposter I think...
Netflix is acting really sus...
I literally saw netflix vent
@Aditya Rajput everyone is my friend
No its def brown I havent seen him at all
@Harry Dingling fake news spreads 6 times faster on social media
This is the most important documentary of human history.
People might see your comment and laugh, but I wholeheartedly agree with you. This might be the last great doc before it collapses.
LOl relax
Yep...I got my 10yr old to watch it....but had to make her put my phone down 3 times to get her to focus on the tv 🤔🤪
The tragic irony is we're watching this trailer on KZhead
You are most likely correct.
The most fascinating prediction I have ever heard came from this film, someone on this film predicted the January 6 insurrection. They didn’t predict the date, but the fact that the dude predicted people trying to break into the White House still blows my mind.
This might be the most important documentary of the century.
The Social Dilemma should be required viewing in every school. people pf all ages need to wake up.
My teacher showed us this in class(virtual class) the other day

Okay, @Bernard
We can change that Tyler this is the time where we ask help from Karen to have a talk with the boss
That feeling when you watch this documentary, then log out of Netflix and it asks you "You're already done? This was quick!" Thank you Netflix for driving home the point of what I've just watched.
I'm just here reading the comments silently. I wonder if Google also knew this 😅
I'm so glad a big company has brought this up. It has been ignored for some time now. 👏👏👏
Yea
Do you really think this show will change the way how we use social media platform? I don't think so. I will treat this simply as an entertainment show from Netflix =)
@@ArumitTalukdar That's just highly ignorant. You haven't even seen the documentary.
@@ArumitTalukdar let's just have some faith in us because that thinking negatively about us won't help.
Netflix does the same thing too, tailoring recommendations for individual users and what not.

Exactly one year ago I deactivated my Instagram & other social media accounts. From November till July i only had Facebook messenger for chat & KZhead , that’s was it . Even during those hard times in March and April when i couldn’t leave the house , i was trying to be as far from my phone as possible. My daily screen time was 2-3 hours. Well everything has changed since I downloaded Instagram again , then i decided to reactivate my Tik-Tok and yeah , 9 months of being happy and finally overcoming my phone addiction was gone . My daily screen time is 10+ hours and i am trying to improve it . But it’s too hard . Being off social media helped me to grow so much and be the person i am today . I am not planning to delete KZhead but i need to say goodbye to other apps .
Ironically: Every body writing on a social media platform, AGAINST social media, BUT STILL HOPING TO GET LIKES AND ATTENTION.
heres your like from me xD
The beauty is Reddit, where a lot of people don’t care about “internet points,” or people sometime welcome the downvotes. Sometimes that’s shock value takes which you could also argue is for attention.., sometimes it’s just genuine honesty too. Twitter comments... well. Stay far away from there. 😅
I gave you number 11, lol
Not everybody. Not all of us are needy attention whores.
Just like you
Be a good person in real life and stay authentic, social media has people pretending to be something they're not.
Is that really you? )
wow thanks i'm cured
@Alan Z I think its both and that's a great point cause some people do feel more comfortable showing themselves and how they are over a screen then in person.
Not everybody is happy with their real lives what are those people supposed to do when social media goes away?
chaos126 gaming Its called find new hobbies. Enjoy the outdoors more, be a better human being etc. There’s more to life than social media.
Who is here , after recemendation of Sandeep Maheshwari sir ??
This should be required watching in every middle school.

@@snuffeldjuret their goal is exactly the same of the social network, you should spend the most time possible using the app... And for their goal they are doing the same thing the documentary is denouncing...
Would love to see a sequel to this documentary! I think the sequel should talk about how our political-social systems are inept, too slow and lack the will power to regulate social media companies. And why our civilization and culture is too immature, ignorant and lackadaisical at advocating for ethical and justice systems that protect users from bad and illegal practices.
Finally an answer as to WTF happened to us???!!!!!

Just watched this docu.. Surprised at the amount of people acting like this is all something new.
I think whats new is the idea that these platforms are the reason for increased divide and polarization in all democratic countries, at least that's what I took away from it.
@Ÿamada I must have missed the white ppl bashing, are you sure we are talking about the same video?
@Ÿamada If you say so, I don't remember that. Regardless seems like an irrelevant detail considering most of the content seemed to be politically neutral. I found the overall feel of the film to have a uniting quality to it, so I can certainly understand if some people won't like it. Some people are too far down the rabbit hole to turn back now
Do they offer a solution tho?
Ÿamada I don’t think it was bashing white people, they just want more inclusiveness
Before watching this documentary I thought was mad cus I was th only sane person among my friends who aren't into social media. They made think I was lonely being disconnected.
I was curious to see it after after Sandeep sir's recommendation

@@luvga1n what there trying to say is that, if no one can agree on a common truth, then how are we supposed to interact
Panic ASAP what matter exactly do you see these days that you deem as "common truth" which people can't agree? Also, what does "common truth" even mean? By common you mean majority of the people agreeing that it's the truth? Isn't that basically the opinion of the majority?
They only interact to insult each other
Like it or not, humans survived in community. We are genetically wired to interact. If babies don't have social interaction, they suffer permanent neurological impairment. We need to find a way to interact that affords respect and dignity to each other. We won't always get it right, but what's the alternative?

I would say limit yourself. Excess of anything is dangerous. Spend less time on Social media and more time with nature, dogs etc. Make Relations with real people not with the virtual ones. Don't search everything on google.. read books. Be Spiritual. Don't put everything on social media. You'll be happy. 🙂
You never can spend less time haha it's a fact
Be Spiritual?
good advice....
Everyone knows this modern saint. Lol
I do this also. The problem is... millions of other people do not, or cannot.
I have always found social media highly boring, Chatting with friends, for me it takes lot of courage and time I rather love to interact face to face

This was actually really interesting. I like how explained WHY people are so polarized right now. I think this is 100% true. There is also more and more hate because people don't see each other as humans. They are just names on the other side of a screen, demonized.
Thru the socials, it's become exponential, but the polarising trend already started early 80s mebbe even Nixon Era. Cars, suburbs, television, 57 channels to each his own, people ve become more estranged with every step, see m walking the streets, locked to their screens, hearing their own stuff inside headphones. Yip, one of m here.
Tbf, polarization can happen regardless of social media though, mostly because of stuff like cognitive biases, cognitive dissonance, fallacies, etc. There's also plenty of moments throughout history where people have tried processing a lot of heavy, morally ambiguous things through demonization of other people (as shown in a lot of studies about tribalism or groupthink or when people develop what their sense of justice/moral compass is).
💯
