Quit social media | Dr. Cal Newport | TEDxTysons
'Deep work' will make you better at what you do. You will achieve more in less time. And feel the sense of true fulfillment that comes from the mastery of a skill.
Cal Newport is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. In addition to studying the theoretical foundations of our digital age, Newport also writes about the impact of these technologies on the world of work. His most recent book, Deep Work, argues that focus is the new I.Q. in the modern workplace and that the ability to concentrate without distraction is becoming increasingly valuable. He previously wrote So Good They Can’t Ignore You, a book which debunks the long-held belief that “follow your passion” is good advice, and three popular books of unconventional advice for students.

You Tube isn't really social media. ..
+Dartist64 Rocks i think it is. Any interface the enables social networks is social media. If youtube is not, you wont be able to comment and reply here.
The best thing to do is to unsubscribe from bs useless channels that don't do anything for you. Then, turn you notifications off. And... The hardest part for me is (because I naturally start scrolling as soon as the a video starts) not reading the comments. Honestly I've really struggled with KZhead comments. I take a lot of things to heart and that is the way I am. I don't watch the news because I don't believe it. So, if you can, stay away from that too. I'm slowly starting to feel better. I wish you all the best in this virtual insanity.
I wish the whole world would get off social media. Its so destructive. I have a friend who has accomplished so many amazing things and travelled the world and she doesn't have social media... her life is ACTUALLY amazing. I feel like because she is never distracted... she actually has to entertain herself in other ways and she is sooooo accomplished and happy and content and her self esteem is so high and I honestly believe its due to this one fact.
@Tinselfect would you say the same to the guy talking in the video cause its posted on social media really making people use it more to see the video

@Toask This is hilarious to see people actually have this way of thinking 😂 the “privilege class” wasn’t always rich at-least for majority, someone was poor in their family until that person or the next in line decided this isn’t what they were willing to settle for. And hey it’s your fault if you choose to stay broke especially if you live in America it’s a capitalist society 🤷🏾♂️, also they have books on wealth and how to invest or even learn about planes if you wanted too but then again not many people read and if they do it’s not a quality book.

TRUE
This January, my 16 year old daughter came to live with me full-time. I have a no-social media policy with my other kids, so told her she wasn't allowed on social media. She needed to detox from it for mental health reasons (she was on social media 12+ hours a day, 10+ hours on just one app). She managed to sneak back onto social media sporadically and I grounded her once I found out. She's been truly social media free for a good while now, I took her iphone and gave her a flip phone. She's now more confident, anxiety is getting under control. A lot less crying spells, finally got into reading for leisure. Has a great sleep routine. She may not realize it yet, but she's really beginning to blossom into the person I knew she would.
Social media is a complete waste of time. These platforms routinely lead to anxiety, isolation and unhappiness across all ages. Cheers to TED talks!!

I quit drinking, smoking pot, and social media at the beginning of 2015. I quit drinking because I didn’t want to get a third DUI and become a felon. I quit smoking pot because I couldn’t afford it any longer. I quit social media because I didn’t have anything going on in my life worth sharing. It took me 5 months to find a job(really it was like the job found me) and just two weeks after starting my first job, I was offered another part time job. The part time job turned into a full time job which came with a promotion. A year later I received another promotion. Now I’m the general manager of the business. If I had continued drinking, I’d be in jail or dead. If I had kept smoking pot, I wouldn’t be working anywhere or breaking my back for under the table pay. If I had continued using social media, I would have been subtly ridiculed for the type of work I was doing and in turn ashamed of my life compared to the lives of my peers. I’m proud of myself and I don’t need anyone from the other side of an app to validate my accomplishments.

Badass story, you hiring
It's been 2 years now since i left/quit social media and afterwards I learned that real life is more important than virtual life. I have gotten rid of depression, jealousy, found peace of mind, am chasing passions and emphasizing a more focused life. I am really happy now and am learning to enjoy every moment of life. The more you spend time with yourself the more you get to know about yourself.
Quitted social media in year 2017. Sixth year going on without social media. No regrets as life is Better now.
So social media- 1. wastes your time 2. fragments your attention- reduces your capacity to focus 3. makes you feel lonely/ isolated 4. makes you insecure and depressed 5. strains your eyes - you forget to blink often 6. makes you sit for a long time 7. makes you forget other productive activities- reading a book, workout
man, true. I wasn't blinking until you said that.

keeps you occupied and involved in trivial issues, reduces your time to learn, reduces your opportunity to increase your knowledge which in turn decreases your power.

This video is timeless, 10x more relevant now than it was 7 years ago. As a father of a two primary school going daughters, it terrifies me. In a few decades from now, I'm convinced that we'll look back at the early decades of social media and wonder how we let these companies do pretty much what they wanted with our kids, their brains, self esteem and mental health.
Children are playing video games on the computer instead of playing in the field, socializing with strangers instead of spending time with their family, neighbors, friends. This social media is completely destroying the future generation. It is very important for us to be aware now.

I am Gen X and I applaud the younger generations that can quit social media. We did not have these platforms to communicate when I was younger, and we were ok. In fact, we fought less, loved more. If more of us went back to the old school ways of communicating and loving one another, we can turn our lives around collectively, and stop this inevitable life train headed for disaster.
I quit Twitter 6 months ago. I can't even describe the amount of productivity I have gained as a result. Sometimes I look back and think: what the hell was I doing? Super Peter very true
I really agree that these social media can be a real prision. One of many in life that people become slaves of. But I am answering your post because I have a bigger message not only for you but for everybody, but since you mentioned videos on spirituality I felt that I had to write this message. I see you have been searching for God. Well, I met Jesus last year, personally. When I gave my life to Jesus I could breath life in my lungs for the very first time. Indescribable Peace and love in my heart, I was filled with His light, mercy, and joy and received the Holy spirit. I was healed of a phobia and my testimony adds to countless that were saved and freed from a life where suffering became normal. It is not. God’s love is perfect and real and He wants us to have a relationship with Him, full of His supernatural blessings and because of that He reached down to us to pay the debt of sin, which is basically us having turned our backs to Him. So that we may live with Him forever. No matter how many religions may deceive people’s minds with false hopes. Jesus lives and continues today healing people, giving freedom from all kinds of boundage and saving souls. One day someone told me the good news and I though this was too good to be true, until I met Jesus. Here I am today eternally grateful for that. All the best to you!

I hope you forever stay in the world of no social media use to continually inform us of the way back. I was born in 1997 and fortunately spent years of my childhood phoneless and in field to play. I also felt the surge of changes that came with the use of social media and I must say that having known what it felt like when it's not ubiquitous was quite a factor for me to slowly disengage in its use now. I got to a point when my mind was tired of the overload of information but my hands automatically looks and scrolls up to infinity. If people don't realize this invisible trade that's going on, they might actually lose sooner the greatest gift that we have; to focus and appreciate time as it is. May God bless you Professor.
Intention plays a factor as well. Social media can be a useful tool or an entertaining toy. KZhead can have a wealth of lectures and tutorials or endless prank and cat videos. Influencers can manipulate the message and medium they post to for profit rather than community. What goes on between your ears will decide. Focus and uninterrupted progress is better than immediate and debilitating distractions.
Well said.
I quit social media because I wanted to be more private with my life - I felt like people that didn't even smile at you were more than happy to know your business - it's weird. It's nice that my life is nobody's business!
Yess!! You're totally right!
Yesss I just quit almost two weeks going strong.
Yes , it benefits no one.people did fine before without it.
@@melancholy_dude did you uninstall or deactivate the accounts?
@@DatPurpleCow uninstall
He's absolutely right. Also, when you quit social media, you find out who your real friends are, which is hardly any of them. You are not friends to most of the people on these social networks. You are just another number and another way to relieve boredom.
Another thing: Facebook exists to harvest personal data for advertising purposes. Facebook makes their money from paid adverts. The social network thing is just a means to that end. That's why it's free to the everyday users. The users of Facebook are not the customers, they are the product being sold. Of course, the same is true about Google.
Exactly. I've never been on Facebook or any of these sites. My real friends, whom I can count on one hand, have my phone number and call me if they need to get in contact with me.
SunEagle Cherokee, thank you for your comment. It just goes to show how everyone is different and has different experiences. In every situation in life, there are always exceptions. Your situation was a very extreme one, but it's great that you found a way through it. You say that people don't have time to socialise face to face. Maybe that's because most people are walking around with their eyes glued to their phones? And if you sit in any waiting room (e.g. barbers, doctors, dentist), almost everyone is looking at their phones. Without the smartphones and social media, these would be opportunities to engage with people in person. I would like to ask you this question: if social media didn't exist when your wife died, what would do you think you would have done to try to get through it? And please understand, that's not a rhetorical question intended to try and make myself sound clever. I'm genuinely interested to know what your honest answer is. And please try to resist a knee-jerk response which merely backs up the position you've already established. Please give it some deep thought. I'm interested to know.
I sill say if not one could take the time to physically come see you then I'm still suspicious. It sounds like a very lonely life, like the one I'm living. I was cut off SSI through no fault of my own. When my income ended it seemed so did face to face visits from past friends. SM dose not replace needing to hire a driver but unable to pay, wanting to set face to face and talk with someone, instead of texting to a white screen. To me it just isn't the same as a friend really being there. Yea I'm typing to some one now, but they feel like machines. and in a changing world I find it difficult for a straight male to make friends. We live in a world that seems to forget not all men seeking friends want to have sex with them But I think males usually make that one or two very good reliable straight friend be it at school and perhaps work and they don't really make another one. I once had a straight friend I could call at 3:00 a.m when he wasn't working and ask if he would buy me a soda and drive it to my home. "I can not drive but I had my SSI at the time" and most of the time he wouldn't accept gas money or the money for the soda (It was Pepsi with Lemon which I don't think they make it anymore.) and I just don't know rarely a human being that dose that. But alas when I couldn't pay him at all to go to distant cities for my appointments and such then we sort of fell out of favor after a solid 30 year friend ship.
even as true as those all are, quitting social media made me a more attuned person to reality, no technological impulse creating a false reality for me, every second a notification comes on your phone, you grow hardwired to destruct your nerves
I quit social media, and reduced my phone usage, oh my god: i am not wasting my time i am connected to the real world my eyes feel better i am enjoying every single moment
I quitted social media 5 years ago and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made.
the only message social media has given me is that I happen to be less active than my friends which makes me feel lonely, jealous, worse and depressed
Atli Tobiasson i can relate

thanks!
I agree
Don't count on it. If your friends were really so "active" would they have time to post all they do to facebook? Most of what you're seeing is a carefully cultivated lie. No reason to get depressed young man!
This is definitely one of the most important topics of the modern age.
Cool seeing your channel commented here. I'm a big fan!

Chris you're here too
In my experience in using social media, it makes my life more miserable because I'm feeling envious to the person who is posting about their happy life which makes me more anxious all the time. I decided to deactivate my account and delete my Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. And now I feel more comfortable because I'm not bother of what's happening in other people's lives. 😊
nice
You tube for me is a bunch of info. I learned lots here. I would rather stay here than fb, instagram etc
I don't consider KZhead a social media therefore I'm keeping it. I learn a lot from it.
@@mykytadiachyna1608 yeah but there's no such thing as TED talk in books in actual . Aw
KZhead is not a social media like Facebook and Instagram or Twitter..
KZhead is a wealth of information . I cannot see myself without it. I love to read also but nothing compares.
I agree, KZhead is so useful but is also very annoying, some of the idiots who post video's and con men smooth talking about being a millionaire etc.
Nykyta Diachyna You could use Google search, KZhead and books to maximize knowledge gain. However, to say KZhead and Instagram (ext) are the same is not true.
When I deleted all my socials I got texts and calls from every one of my close friends asking WHY? It felt weird that I had to almost defend my decision to so many people. It just proves how addicted people are to it and how it has changed how we treat each other. Not a fan of how humanity has evolved.
same bro
Explaining the decision to everyone becomes a pain. No one gets it, or is ready to accept it.
"I can explain it. But it will take about 14 minutes? - you know what? I can 'share' a link that succinctly explains my decision. Here you go: kzhead.info/sun/ZqlwmM-IkV9-h6M/bejne.html"
Chik Lit this is interesting. I want to get off FB and social media. BUT people will ask if everything is ok etc and that thought almost sounds so exhausting !!!
Zoe Brown To be honest it's only takes one explanation and then people will leave you alone. I've been off for a full year now and it was the best decision for me. I feel like I live my life better not worrying about having to post shit to feel validated by random people I went to high school with.
Thank you so very much for this!!!! When I deleted social media, I realized what an addiction it was. We tune ourselves into a fake world that doesn’t exist. I live free of all social media now and I feel like my life is meaningful because I actually communicate with real people.
I still use social media, but not to look at all the content but to talk to people I met on the internet. Deleted all instagram post and havent posted since. It feels so much better not having to look at ex school colleagues living a rich or happy life that you also want but cant. I feel so good doing what I like and keeping it to myself. I do photography, but I keep it to myself. Social media is a hellhole. Toxic people. Bullying, etc.
I deactivated Facebook when I realized that I was using it for the sole purpose of measuring my self-worth against other people's lives, or more accurately, the impression I got from other people's social lives online. I never even posted status updates because it bothered me when people didn't like them. How embarrassing is that? Actually letting something as transient and fickle as an internet 'like' affect your mood and state of mind. I literally just used to scroll through the news feed and think that the humorous posts were enough to outweigh how shit I felt when I saw people in huge groups socializing while I sat at home alone suffering from anxiety. What sealed it for me was imagining that time suddenly rewound to ~20 years ago during the pre-facebook/social media era. Would I ever know what most of the 300+ 'friends' of mine on Facebook were getting up to in their lives back then? Would I care? Would I go out of my way to find out? The answer to all of these questions was a resounding no. I'd only care about the people I'm closest to, the people I actually interact with outside of social media. Maybe I still would've suffered from anxiety back then. I'm not blaming Facebook on my mental illness. But what social media sites like Facebook do is they severely exacerbate any existing anxiety or self-esteem issues.
I totally agree with your post and hope you're doing better with anxiety issues.
Ronan Mahony😃
as i was reading your comment, i felt, in myself, the embarrasment, but in the same time the relief, of admitting i experienced the same thing (envy, lonelyness, secret want for attention) The bitter and unexpected part was after 4 months after i quit fb, When i asked a friend some info, he said to me "don't You have facebook?" i was instantly thrilled that he noticed that i quit fb, and quickly and radiantly replied "No, since 4 months now! :D", only to get the second part of his answer "all the info is there!!" :))) great, he didn't actually care... :)) And out of 700 fb friends (700 people that i actually met and know), maybe 4 asked me why can't they see my fb page. but they didn't care why, although for me was an opportunity to talk about my feelings with even my closest friends...
Exact same. High five friend.
Ronan Mahony Thank You Thank You, you said exactly how I constantly feel daily.
Strongly agree. I've never felt so much peace since quitting Facebook. I feel like I've gained so much free time.
S Holdeenio amen
Deff Pluto me too
I quit instagram. I feel more focused and I hardly look at my phone. I am more present in the actual moment. I also feel more confident. Before when I would feel insecure I would look at my instagram to pretend I was intentionally trying to be alone but now I don't even care. I don't look at my social media in those moments of insecurities anymore and I find myself more confidently free. Working on quittin facebook.
Me too !
I know exactly how you feel about Instagram. That's why I quit Instagram too. I quit all of them though actually. I feel like social media to me was just a dark place. It made me insecure, depressed, more anxious, more addicted & obsessed with checking my phone... Now I feel good! Life feels amazing without it. I don't check my phone every 5 mins. I feel like I'm not competing with anyone anymore. Plus, social media was triggering my artists block again because I couldn't focus. If you're an artist, you know how awful artist block & writers block can be. It sometimes takes years for you to get out of artists/writers block. I hadn't realized it at the time but it was messing my creative process up!!!! 😣 I feel like I'm living a normal life now. I'm not trying to live up to social media standards anymore. I'm now creating up to 15+ pieces of art everyday now because my focus is on the right track. I'm not focused on Instagram and Snapchat anymore.
Truth I quit Facebook since February I was so shocked that my so called so many Facebook friends never checked on me all the while.
Listen to this TEDxTalk annually. Always a humbling and enlightening experience. Haven't quit social media yet, but my consumption continues to decline. Thanks, Dr. Newport!
whenever I went out, I started thinking about what pictures I can take to post on my newly joined Instagram account, just to match the pictures my friends posted. So I deleted the app. felt better.
Shruti Sura so true, me too
Shruti Sura yeah and always worried about ,how many likes I would get or why aren't my followers increasing... etc
same here shruti
And why all my friends dont like my post? Why dont they reply my message? Why dont they comment on my post? Now after deleting,at least we dont have to worry about
but you're still posting away on FB though
Social media almost becomes like a second job. People are so busy deciding what to post, overthinking things, trying to keep up with the next person. That can be overwhelming. Edit: Checking back in on this video 11 months later. Thanks for the likes and relating to my comment! Wishing everyone a prosperous 2020! Merry Christmas!
2 weeks clean, going on 3 from Facebook. I am on Twitter but not as often maybe twice a day. I do use KZhead a lot but mainly watching history docs or learning new things which is so much more productive and educational.
@@bcandidvisuals I'm going to do the same. I am also on Twitter and KZhead. You're right. I am learning a lot from the videos I select. Facebook has become a place for posting boring things. I am not interested in peoples' pets, kids etc. A lot of people seem to think they're missing out by NOT being on Facebook. I check Twitter once or twice a day if that. I will be much more relaxed and in peace without all the fake drama etc.
Omg so true I use always stress about it now I have so much tiem to do things liek gum
Yeah. I agree. Worrying over your Social Media work and not much on the work in real life.
Second job ?? If you're that interested in social media, make it your ONLY job. There are a ton of people doing that. And yes, it can get overwhelming if you start comparing yourself to others (learnt THIS the hard way).. just express yourself the way you are. People like that better. I had about 120 subscribers on KZhead, (in 3 months) when I was just going after trends and stuff. But then when I started doing what I really liked, I got to 229 subs in around a month and a half.
I deleted my Facebook and Instagram and TikTok and now I have no idea what I’m doing besides taking care of myself skateboarding living my life, working a job that making good money at living free and being the healthiest I’ve ever been
I now despise social media. Wish I heard of this ted talk years ago but I probablly would have dismissed it back then. Deleted twitter and took fb off my phone. Wow did that help. I find I rarely go on fb now,,,,what a relief! It's a real sense of freedom.
I haven't used social media in about 2 years, and I've felt liberated ever since. I find that it incurs people to follow the herd, rather than thinking critically and coming to one's own conclusions. Plus, I do not have 900 friends in real life, so why does my Facebook have that many. I'm a misanthrope anyway. I'm not missing out😃
RaQuan Williams you're on social Media
RaQuan Williams hate to break it to ya- but KZhead is social media....
I'm pretty sure you guys are aware that when people are discussing social media platforms, they're usually referring to the ones like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. Yes, KZhead is a "social media" platform, but I don't think I have to explain why KZhead is in a different sect of social media.
RaQuan Williams I would like to hear how yt is'different'
Of course yt is quite different. You can't use it to stalk people, and people can't use it to stalk you. You can't post 10000000 photos of your dumb holidays (let me tell you frankly, nobody cares). The other social networks are based on the idea that everything that happens in our lives is worth sharing with everyone even if it's not. Can't say the same thing for yt, just think how posting a photo on insta is accessible to everyone and how editing a great video here takes time, practice, and great skills.
I decided to quit Facebook and Twitter as starters today. I feel like it's the right thing to do because at this point I'm just... tired. Whoever's reading this, please wish me luck!
Toka alokda You can do this!
Goodluck!!
Good luck! That would be a good start! Keep going !!
I have important and famous personalities following me. How to quit?
Good luck
Well over 2 years now. Never regretted it. I don’t count KZhead as social media as it’s a learning tool. Yes we can leave comments but it really can’t be compared to Facebook instagram or twitter.
This video inspired me to quit social media forever. it is been 5 months now, and I have already seen a huge difference in my life. I would highly recommend people to quit that fake reality and live the actual life.
My mom didn't have social media for the longest time until like a year ago and I've watched her go downhill since then. Legitimately terrifying stuff.
Same here. It's a way of escapism and seeking a pat ob the head. But an unhealthy one. .
Same...my mom is constantly on facebook. Our time together is spent with me talking to a wall while she scrolls. So sad...although it did inspire me to deactivate all my socials.
Same
My parents are the same. They were wary and sceptical of social media for years but in quarantine they spent more time on Facebook and now they’re hooked. I feel especially bad for my mom when I pop in to say goodnight and she’s glued to the phone still. Her sleep quality has gotten worse because of it.
Really? thats intresting.
I deleted all my social networks accounts. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat aye even fuckin Tinder. And I feel fucking amazing, I don't feel I need to prove anything anymore.
AdamAKTV to anybody
Yes! I felt same 2 years ago when I quit all my social media accounts 😉
Edith liberating isnt it. Why is there now inherent need for everyone to have an IG or facebook its ridiculous. I use if Ive been refered to it but the mindless idea of surfing it to keep up with everyone elses life is nonsense to me Id rather focus on me and work on me 👍
Protagonist i want to delete but it would be impolite for my family they are heavy users and if i delete mine they will keep asking why and want me to join the club again T_T. Fml. Anyhow i realize there are more and more people posting hate comments abt fb and insta lately on youtube. Happy to see you guys. I really do.
AdamAKTV Tinder is the worst!!
I AM 73 AND A TOTAL AMATEUR ON THIS BUT FOR SOME THINGS I LOVE KZhead. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I CAN LITERALLY ADDRESS ISSUES THAT MEAN A LOT TO ME. I'M NOT AN INVENTOR BUT HAVE HAD IDEAS FOR DECADES ABOUT IMPROVING EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES. PERHAPS IN A NAIVE WAY BUT AT LEAST I'M TRYING TO SAVE OUR PLANET IN MY SMALL WAY. THINKING BACK 60 YEARS AND RIFLING THROUGH 1000 RECORDS NOT KNOWING HOW ANY TRACK SOUNDED BUT HOPING IT WORKED FOR ME. NOW I CAN AT A HIT OF MY INDEX FINGER ACCESS THOUSANDS OF TUNES. SONGS IN SECONDS. IT GIVES NEWS AND VIDEOS THAT I NEED TO KEEP UP WITH OUR WORLD'S ISSUES. YES, I KNOW IT HAS CHANGED MY VIEW AND SADLY OBLITERATED MY HUMOUR. I CAN NOW EVEN CHANGE MY HEADLIGHT BULB FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE. A GREAT VIDEO AND THANKS FOR YOUR OPINION!
I ditched my iPhone 12 , bought a Xiaomi device and it has a great feature called app lock. I have locked all apps except - Phone for calling, Signal for texting , Payment app , Maps, Document Scanner and Camera. The password is 12 complex digits which I can't remember but is written on a my attic wall (if I need it in future). Also my phone (also PC) is permanently on grayscale mode. My decade long Smartphone Addiction destroyed in 1 hour. On laptop I have disabled Wifi card driver and I have to use USB tethering from phone to access internet. Also I have blocked distracting websites by editing host files in Windows. I have also sold all my extra screen devices except 2- my laptop and phone.
Quitting Facebook was the best thing I ever did. I got hours of my life back for time with real friends. Anyone who is really a friend knows how to get a hold of me.

Really is
I noticed with FB that nobody posts on it at all anymore, not the friends I had on it anyway. Then with Twitter everyone was constantly just fighting with one another on it, very toxic environment with lots of hate. TikTok was just hours on end of mindless nonsensical videos
27 years old now. I quit all social medias when i was 25. The life improvement has been unmeasurable!! Truly unbelievable. I still see my friends and family struggling with issues that they dont even know they have. Its pretty weird. We are at a very weird time for our species, we are social animals, and our social abilities are actually all but completely gone.

gurpreet brar yup. and I'm loving it. it feels great to not constantly compare my life to others and have everybody's negative feelings rub off on me all day in the form of passive agressive memes and ridiculous status update rants. 4 months in and I don't think I will ever go back.
but it only allows you to deactivated for 7 days the max....how do you do to delete the account forever??
I stopped using media for a while now. I do feel less negativity, less stress, less comparing my life to others. Overall, I feel myself much better without social media. I can focus on my own life instead of comparing to others. What am I missing without using social media? Memes, some hot stories, hot trends here and there. But oh well, those usesless things dont even contribute anything meaningful to my life afterall.
This comment section proves how impactful deleting social media is. I deleted Snapchat 10 months ago, & it changed my life! Then i deleted tik tok! I’m so much happier.
