How to Achieve Your Most Ambitious Goals | Stephen Duneier | TEDxTucson

2024 ж. 4 Мам.
13 057 215 Рет қаралды

How you define Stephen Duneier depends on how you came to know him. Some define him as an expert institutional investor, while others know him as a large scale installation artist, avid outdoorsman, professor, decision strategist, coach, business leader, mindfulness extremist, author, speaker, daredevil or Guinness world record holder. In his talk, Stephen explains that what truly defines him aren't titles, but an approach to decision making that transformed him from someone who struggled with simple tasks to a guy who is continuously achieving even his most ambitious dreams.
For thirty years, he has applied cognitive science to investing, business and life. The result has been the turnaround of numerous institutional businesses, career best returns for managers who have adopted his methods, the development of a $1.25 billion dollar hedge fund and a rapidly shrinking bucket list.
Mr. Duneier teaches graduate courses on Decision Analysis in UCSB’s College of Engineering. His book, AlphaBrain is due for release in early 2017 from Wiley & Sons.
Through Bija Advisors, he helps business leaders improve performance by applying proven, proprietary decision-making methods to their own processes.
His artwork has been featured around the world and is represented by the Sullivan Goss Gallery. As Commissioner of the League of Professional Educators, Duneier is using cognitive science to alter the landscape of American education. He is the former Head of Currency Option Trading at Bank of America and Emerging Markets at AIG International.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

  • What he said - break down your goals into small managable tasks. What he didnt say - dont have too many goals at the same time. Notice how he achieved most of his goals by focusing on one goal at a time.

    • He didn't say a lot of things. In fact it's like he hasn't analysed what he's done and tried to distil why it works down. He probably doesn't even know that he doesn't know why he got to where he got. He thinks he's passed on a philosophy that works but he's barely communicated anything about the how, at all. Mostly he just gave a random list of achievements. Such an annoying talk

    • Stephen used time blocks. He focused on one goal for a specific amount of time, and then after the time he set was over, he would immediately stop what he was working on and move on to work on a different goal. You can never have too many goals [at least that's what I believe]

My work has improved, my studies have improved, projects that I have been putting off for six years will now be finished by Christmas. Even my wife has noticed this change. • *Summary: Marginal improvement is the key to success* Speaker says that what stands between us and our most ambitious dream is not magical skill or talent but more with how we approach problems and make decisions to solve them. Marginal improvements are the key to be better. Stop becoming a spectator and become an active participant of your actions and decisions. Take big assignments and break them into smaller tasks. Speaker says in college he used to not think of completing 5 chapters but reading 3-4 paras at a time for 5-10 min then do something else for couple minutes and then come back. He was a straight-A student all through college- dean's list. You have to break big goals into smaller achievable goals. The talk includes many personal stories about the speaker's life which I recommend you to watch for yourself. I also found the oratory skills of the speaker to be very good. A must watch video.

My guitar playing has improved from the plateau I was in for years, and I went from running an 8 min mile to running a 6 min mile in 5 months. Plus eating a low carb diet and I lost 30 pounds. I'm learning French on Duolingo. I can sometimes understand French sentences at the back of product labels that have french translations. And I'm reading the Bible for fun. Then come back to another 5-10 minute task (take tasks one at a time) These last lines of the video are POWER 🔥 Pull your most ambitious dreams off the book shelf and start pursuing them, by making just a marginal adjustment to your routine. I set high standards for myself to do tasks for a long time but I end up being overwhelmed and literally do nothing, I've waste so much time. One of the factors I think that makes me set up high standards is the media/society, I often hear stories of people working so many hours that I feel like I should be doing the same but at the end of the day it doesn't work. I'll try to listen to this regularly so that i don't get side-tracked

    • That's your problem. You set way too high of goals. The point is small and manageable tasks. Don't do so much or have such high expectations. Whenever you stop and get sidetracked with your goals, DON'T think "okay, this time I won't get sidetracked".. Instead, think "Oh, oops I got sidetracked. Okay, let's get back on track. I probably will get sidetracked again after a few days or weeks, but that's okay." Then when you get sidetracked after a few days or weeks, you then tell yourself the same thing: "oops, I got sidetracked again. It's okay. Let's get back on track." The more you do this, the more you will develop consistency.

  • Just like another reader here I had a BIG million dollar question... how to work on something for 5 minutes, then take a break, NOT get distracted, and return to the task?? I purchased his book that came out a few days ago called AlphaBrain and he explains several concepts in detail. Doing the task is just a small part of the big picture and supposed to be the easiest. He puts in a lot of time before the task in planning and making decisions about what he is going to do and why? That's the toughest part that 95% people just don't do because it's hard to think through that stuff. They start at a task, get distracted and don't complete it. Steve breaks his goal down into tiny little pieces, plans out when, how and why he's going to do it, even planning for when he won't feel like doing it, and how to address that state in advance. Overall, he advises on how to improve the process of making the minute to minute decisions we make in a day and not fall into same old traps. Most of us don't approach problems that way and that's why we fail. I'm still trying to re-read, absorb and implement the advice in his book. I see how it can be life changing.

  • The Japanese Call it Kaizen, which is to do something that is in congruent with your goals, even if it is just for a minute. This technique changed my life in just a few months. Goals that I failed to hit for years, habits that I failed to break since childhood, I achieved in a span of just 8 months

    @ojsympson35@ojsympson355 жыл бұрын
    • @Ayandolos if you set a goal, like let say to loose weight, it will be difficult to be consistent in effort especially when you are not used to excercising. So the way Kaizen works is that you put in effort everyday by being consistent and breaking down the task into something more accommodating to the mind. If you are supposed to run for 1 hr, and you fill tired, or not in the mood, just decide to run for 5 minutes instead. If you get up and run for 5 minutes, you will have manipulated your mind to take the first step, as a result, you might be able to run for maybe 20 to 30 minutes. It eliminates Procastination and laziness. The key is to be consistent no matter what, even in days that you don't feel like doing the difficult task.

      @ojsympson35@ojsympson355 жыл бұрын
    • @Ayandolos the secret is consistency, that is more important than putting so much effort in a task but failing to be consistent. Kaizen will get you to be consistent, then you will be able to increase effort and output in time

      @ojsympson35@ojsympson355 жыл бұрын
    • @Ayandolos exactly, when you don't feel like doing, just set a goal to do just 1 push up. When you are on the floor and doing just one, you will reignite your momentum and push to even 5 or 7, and that's how you will remain consistent

The brain want's easy and fun stuff (aka instant gratification) so we can use it in our favor by making hard stuff easy and enjoyable. Once we reach the small successes we want more and become more productive. Some people become workaholics. Absolutely no magic pills just small adjustments. Also focusing on long term goals instead of instant pleasure is important. Thats how I think, you don't have to agree with me. Also sorry for my grammar, I'm still learning the language peace 🖖

I was in a low paid, a bottom-of-the-ladder job, which is fine but not what I wanted to do. I was working hard but not seeing the positive outcome coming my way. Stephen changed that. He told me that I can and I will get where I want but also gave me the recipe. He told me to change the ladder and gave me the confidence and method to achieve more. He changed me. I'm now running my own business, doing exactly what I want, earning more than ever and not feeling I have a job. More importantly, I'm happy and know how to do more. It's a different question that I still need his inspiration from time to time. But since I've known him, I don't have the excuses anymore.

  • "instead of assuming that I would suddenly settle down and focus on learning, I decided to assume I wouldn't. And so if I wanted to achieve the type of outcome that I desired (doing well in school), I was going to have to actually change my approach." That's a great approach. Definitely going to try that. A big reason why I'm such a master procrastinator, I think, is because I'm constantly assuming that I could stop procrastinating anytime I want.

The point is to let the built up stress go from working and relax for a bit, then recover and return, it works very well ngl
