A few years ago I tried making transparent wood and it kind of worked. The pieces that I made were somewhat okay, but I was never really happy with the result. I finally decided to try it again though!

  • I did a short project on this for my chemistry class! In my research I learned a lot about delignification, etc., but I was still pretty confused on how the process worked. The articles and papers I read made it seem really simple and I thought there must be something I was missing. This video would have been super helpful if I had found it. Edit: however, I will say that the process I learned about specifically didn’t remove the lignin to avoid encountering structural issues with the wood after having like half its components removed. Instead, they applied a wash of some sort of acid or base (I think? It’s been a while and I don’t quite remember) and left the wood in the sun for a period of time. This was supposed to make the pigment inside the lignin transparent instead of removing the lignin in its entirety. This is the part I was confused about, because it seemed deceptively simple. I’d love to see a video on this process, to see if it really is that simple!

And you wouldn't have to worry too much about mold getting into the grain, because it's partially plastic. • Honestly this isn't entirely untrue. If you are somebody like codyslab and are on every watchlist available and then some, even if (and when) you do get a visit from the FBI I suspect it's a more casual affair than it might be if you were only on lists related to, say, potential nuclear weapons or dirty bombs. When you've got a well-rounded list of suspicious activities, it's clearer that you're just exploring and messing around rather than plotting a terrorist attack.

  • @NileRed did you consider sanding the surfaces of the wood smooth before running them through the processes? Could the issues with mma be with impurities in the liquid or the initiator powder?

  • I discovered a property of certain woods today. I guess certain woods contain a strong, Fire and Water resistant polymer called suberin. I’m curious if you used a type of wood really high in suberin if the finished product might come out a bit stronger and more resistant to the elements. I imagine woods of this type probably have different biological properties and different lignin content so the whole process might be different. Just curious, wondering if Nile or anyone else could provide their thoughts on this.

  • Wood at room tempreature conditions has between 8 and 14% moisture depending on the air moisture conditions. So drying does have a big impact on chemical processes. Several hours above boiling temperatures and waiting till the weight does not reduce anymore does remove the moisture till 0%. Epoxy also does not get into the wood, stabilization resin (for example turntex cactus juice) or plexiglass dissolved in acetone should work a lot better. you can also dye your wood with any color you like with cactus juice and dyes. Also be careful with your vacuum chamber lid... I had mine explode when it formed those cracks. buy a glass vacuum lid. thats a lot safer.
