Watch as Jared McCann takes the puck on a shorthanded breakaway and takes a hit from Cale Makar into the boards, he would leave the game, and Makar would be assessed a minor penalty for interference.

idk how literally no one seems to realize that the whistle was blown AFTER the hit. Yes, it was interference because he hit a player who was nowhere near the puck, but that's it. That's why it's a 2 minute penalty. McCann go hurt because he knew the puck went out of play after he shot it and wasn't expecting a hit. No one else knew where the puck was, hence Makar hitting him thinking McCann was going to the corner for the puck. There was literally no intent behind the hit other than that, so it's nothing more that a 2 minute interference call, you don't make the penalty larger just because a guy got injured, this is hockey sometimes players just get hurt.

I'm going to give my opinion as an Avs Fan. Interference was the right call. Should more have been called? Possibly. Makar is a lot stronger than many realize. He's delivered hard powerful and clean hits before. This play looked like the puck went high and maybe would bounce back down and maybe that's why Makar played the body on McCann. He has hit players unexpecting in his own zone. This one, clean or not, Makar knew what he was doing. I do think the hit was late, but there wasn't any boarding (at least head first), hit to the head, instigating, or battle between the two. It's shoulder to shoulder, but it was so close to the boards. it just happens and you cant predict it. I think the reason it stunned McCann is because he wasn't expecting it. the hit also twisted his waist and he landed awkwardly. He also didn't break his fall cause he was too surprised to react. So that's my take. Penalty for Makar? Absolutely. A double minor? idk maybe? Major? Probably not.
Yeah, you didn't need to say you were an Avs fan. Your ridiculous take says it for you.
Logic has no room here, it seems. There are two rules driven into kids when they start playing: Play to the whistle and stay alert, don't get hurt. McCann broke both of these rules. If there had been a whistle, it's a dirty hit. Barring that, it draws a minor for looking bad, but no rules were broken. No one at ice level knew where the puck was or a brawl would have broken out after that hit.
Makar knew where the puck wasn’t, that’s for sure. It wasn’t anywhere near McCann . He knew this because he saw the direction of the puck, he followed McCann for 3 + seconds after the shot and clearly didn’t see the puck in or close to McCann’s possession. He also didn’t see McCann looking around or in any direction that was a reasonable location for the puck. He also hesitated initially on making the hit, before then deciding to ‘go for it’. Indicating to me that he had a pretty good sense that the hit he was about to make was wrong. Any other take is delusional in my opinion. Hopefully Makar’s stupid decision doesn’t affect McCann long term, because that’s what’s important here. Who cares about the game, the series, the next series…this is about the health and welfare of a young man in the prime of his life. Hockey is just a game.

@ Amos Fernandes. Absolutely the very first thing I thought of after seeing the hit a few times, different angles. Like Turgeon, McCann wasn't expecting to be hit, so late after the play. Makar deserves a lengthy suspension, but this League doesn't have the balls to do it... "oh no, not to one of our superstars!!"
Claude Lemieux would be proud of that hit
Lemieux coached the Avs today.
cool story bro
Draper’s face never recovered from that hit
That's closer to Hunter vs Turgeon
@@scorpirus That's late and nasty but Turgeon had scored, I believe it was the game winner(series winner?) and Hunter skated the entire width of the ice and crosschecked Turgeon. Knocked him out of the playoffs, one of the dirtiest plays I've ever seen in over 50 years of watching hockey.
People should really be upset at the ref not blowing the whistle. Makar played until that whistle. I also believe that Makar lost the puck. You can see him look left just before he hits McCann. Unfortunate situation where one guy saw it leave the ice and relaxed while the other did not.
This is the best take on the hit I've seen here...hit was late for sure, but not dirty...just an unfortunate result. If the whistle blows the play dead, he's not finishing his hit.
Bullshit take.
I saw a headline indicating McCann was lost due to a "late" hit. My only question is, why the italics? This was Dale Hunter quality late.
That looked like Hunter on Turgeon super late, play was over...minor penalty wow
That's what I was thinking. Except Hunter got 25 games. Makar got a major reduced to a minor.
I can't believe nobody faught makar right after this. It happened all the time except this time it was actually warranted. That hit was brutal.
Lmao makar is Norris/smyth winner, he isn’t fighting anyone. Anyone tries to fight him they get apes by Manson
Who on that team can fight?
@@xboxrules8472 oleksiak, soucy, I think dun has
@@Gulutzansyourdaddy Yeah, but I said "can fight" not has fought.
The main giveaway for me was Makar pushed him away with his glove to get separation..thats when I knew for sure Makar knew the puck was out of play
Makar doing a Lemieux impression
But if that's Bunting it's a 5min major and 12 games minimum, what a joke.
Tom Wilson does that to Sidney Crosby, it's at minimum a 20 game suspension.
@@aurumargentum6505 not a leafs fan, this was way dirtier
@Hakarinskia should've been a penalty for the bolts for hitting bunts elbow with his face obviously
Elbow to the head , and Makar hitting a defenceless players head into the glass which then smashes again on the ice….hmmm…As if you think one is worse than the other.
@@aurumargentum6505 Not a leafs fan but this is wayyy worse. This is one of the lowest things u can do in hockey. About as low and dirty as it gets.
That should have been at least a double minor. As an die hard avalanche fan, I think this should have been a game misconduct but if it was reduced it should have been a double minor.
I do agree it was a clean hit but a little unnecessary
Double for looking proud of himself couse he knows he can or wat

Clean? Wtf? Puck is out of play, how is this clean? I’m not a fan of any of those 2 teams, this is just a clear 5 min for a very late hit
@@urbankress1745 just because YOU knew the puck was out of play doesn’t mean everyone knew that. Even the refs didn’t know right away considering the whistle wasn’t blown until after the hit was made
BAD CALL...ABSOLUTELY A MAJOR PENALTY.
retaliation for that hit! Especially in the playoffs, insane. 215
How is that not a major? Boarding an unsuspecting opponent long after the puck is gone and it's on its way out of play.
McCann was looking for the puck. Makar didn't know the puck was out of play and neither did McCann. McCann just wasn't paying attention.
@@soulknife20 I guess Makar wasn’t paying attention either then?
@@brianhobaugh No whistle was heard. Play to the whistle.
@@soulknife20 So I can just demolish anyone I want as long as the whistle hasn’t gone? Gotcha.
@@brianhobaugh It was shoulder to shoulder. Sorry you're an idiot
I like Makar but that has to be a suspension and I have no idea why it wasn't a major
Messed up thing was to originally call a major l, but then walk back that decision
Makar better watch his back. If that was my teammate I would find a way to get makar back when he isn't paying attention.
Makar needs to get smoke checked game 6 because I'm hoping he's suspended for game 5.
Dirty AF. Reminds me of Hunter hitting Turgeon.
Not even close.
That was shoulder to shoulder. You new around here?
He didn't say it was exactly that situation ... just that it reminds him of it. So relax. It made that hit come to my mind as well.
@@mhicaoidh1 I know what he said, it's posted right above. It's not even close.
@Kevin M After seeing several of the replays within this clip, different angles, I thought the EXACT same thing, Hunter's hit on Turgeon. Not the exact same play, but many similarities. Others have referenced it as well, so we're not alone... haha.
If this hit doesn't warrant a three game suspension I'm not sure what does
Definitely not trying to gouge a goalies eye out with your stick. He only got 2 games
I can't believe makar got suspended for this
Me too.
Brutally late hit, should have been a boarding major at the least. Hope its reviewed with a suspension like Bunting received.
I am actually shocked. I did not expect a dirty hit like this by Makar, probably as little as McCann before getting plastered into the boards.
What do you mean? He's a dirty player and he doesn't have the strength to lay a clean hit
@@earthquakkejake9894 In what way is Makar a dirty player? He’s never come close to any type of controversy in his career. Also, he hit him before the play was whistled dead. You sound like you started watching hockey 4 months ago
@@bdgrey YOU sound like the one who has been watching for five minutes. Makar bitches and moans and gets cranky all the time. Literally gets red in the face lmao. He’s a brat.
@@bdgrey Not to mention….he didn’t have the puck moron. Doesn’t matter about the whistle. Take the Colorado jersey off, it’s too tight. There’s no oxygen going to your brain.
@@bdgrey nice projection, the fact that the play wasnt blown dead is completely irrelevant dude didnt have the puck for 2 seconds. Oh well itll be funny when the avs lose in the first round to seattle
HOW ARE PEOPLE ARGUING THIS ISNT BAD?????? WHAT ARE YOU GUYS WATCHING WHO SAYS THIS ISNT A MAJOR INTERFERENCE AND SUSPENSION WORTHY?
Interference penalties are often the most brutal.
The way rules are enforced thus far in the playoffs is making it hard to even get excited for games to be honest
A hit that late should have been a match penalty.
Whistle was after the Hit
@@ericw1314 Whistle doesn't matter, you can't hit a player that long after the puck has left their stick.
@@Xanlet yeah? Which is why they called interference. Man a lot of people in the comments don't know the rules
@@ericw1314 still doesn’t mean the hit wasn’t late. Still doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have been a 5 and a game…
I don't buy Makar's "I didn't know puck was out out play" BS for a second. It looked like he was about to peel away and give up the play, you know, because it was over. He gave McCann a little nudge with the forearm, starting listing lazily to the left. Then he suddenly changed his mind and smashed him instead. His hand is in McCann's face throughout the entire process, so when McCann's head hit's the glass, Makar's hand is there pushing it into it. That's a suspension for sure.
1:57 I didn't know Matt Damon was an nhl ref
Makar!! What are you DOING, kid??
Mcdavid got a major for less tf
how is that just 1 game ? oO
Cale’s taking lessons from Dumba

Makar = 1 game suspension, Bunting = 3 games suspension. Find the logic.
Ok at 0:55 you have ref who is face first on the action, wtf is going on in this guy head 😂😂😂😂
Just love how all these "rules experts" try to justify the call on the ice. That should have been a major. The hit was very late and the Kraken player had already relaxed. Cale knew he was over the line when he turned around and already had the "what did I do" look.
They broke our guys neck and just a 2 minute
