That was an incredibly dirty play. If Pietrangelo isn't suspended for this, then this league is an absolute joke. That was a deliberate attempt to injure our leading goal scorer with the game already out of reach for his team. NHL Player Safety, please do your job!

For those who haven’t played hockey or studied the rules; a two handed slash is an entirely different beast than your usual one handed defensive slash which might land you a 2 minute break. Two hands equals a chop and basically intent to injure. If Alex isn’t suspended it sends a message that trying to fracture a player’s arm is fine… and kids playing will think so to.

Noticed similar antics at the end of the Leafs game tonight. Players are trying to injure or at least intimidate the other team, knowing full well a penalty doesn't carry over to the next game. Suspensions are rare. Maybe the NHL needs to consider penalties that carry over to the next game, just for playoff series. It sounds crazy, but how else do you appropriately punish this behavior? If nothing changes, expect injuries to happen late in any game that isn't close.

Oilers were hacking at Petey all game long, and refs ignored it most of the time. In any disciplinary action NHL HQ is going to have to take that into consideration.
A clean hit, (or even a dirty one) is nothing compared to a two handed slash at the wrist. Going after Drai is worse than McDavid with the way both are playing in the playoffs. This was clear intent to injure with no regard for a penalty since the game was over already.

I was a young Pens fan back in 92 when Adam Graves cheap shotted Mario with slash on the hands. That was a love tap compared to this. Just astounding to have announcers logic of “hey he got one cheap shot last game (admittedly Kane should have sat for) and they are finishing checks on him, so that kind of reaction is warranted and just fine - hey at least he didn’t tomahawk his face - then he’d have real discipline to face”. Wow. This trend of targeting top players has to be dealt with and the answer isn’t enforcers. That was a myth to me that it truly solved things 20 years ago. As a fan of just playoff hockey I’ll shun sleep to see this incredible run by Draisaitl, I don’t want to watch some ham and egger, try guy 4th liner. I can see that most anywhere. People want to see elite talent play not get WWE come to life

NGL, the commentators even bringing up the hits Pietrangelo has taken feels like equivocation. There's a pretty big difference between late hits, high hits, hits with a bit more stick than they should have and a two handed over head chop. It's not a hockey play.

There's also the question of Pietrangelo tossing his gloves off and punching McDavid in the final 5 minutes of the game. If that's deemed to be an instigator, that's an automatic 1 game suspension, regardless of the slash. I doubt the league will do that, but there's also a case for it.

One thing I find humorous about this whole thing is seeing McDavid coming in to fight and then not dropping the gloves and still throwing punches. If you're going to commit to fighting for your teammate getting slashed like that then commit to it and drop the mits. That little act did nothing but show you're not committed to standing up for your teammates. Also, I don't believe Petro will be suspended because he was penalized accordingly. However, I do believe it could and possibly should warrant a game in the press box. DoPS views playoff games differently so who knows what they'll do.

@@vegasmobydick Nah. If Piet had been going for the hit, Drai had sent the backhander, and he had followed through late, that would be understandable. That sort of thing has been going uncalled and dishing one out makes sense. But there is no world where a two handed overhead chop is even vaguely something you can actually do. This is intent to injure, and he doesn't even RAISE the stick before Drai had sent the puck.

This whole playoffs the NHL Department of Player Safety has been a joke. We have seen it countless times. It needs to be stopped, this was an obvious attempt to injure one of the Oilers biggest stars.
That is unquestionably intent to injure, and yet the fat ref wouldn't let them settle it on the ice. If you don't want a bloodbath that's a multigame suspension.

The justification is always "but look at X player on your team who did Y last game!". The justification given for one clear violation is an uncalled previous violation.
Big thing to me is at 2:18 drai telling everyone “hey im good, im good kostin hey im good” and then waves him off. If petro isn’t suspended he is gonna get head hunted.

Im not pointing to only this incident, but if the crime is bad enough for a 5 min major, with less than 5 mins remaining in the 3rd, then carry over the penalty to the start of the next game. LMAO, I know it sounds extreme and it will never happen, but I bet it would stop the cheap hack work dead in its tracks.
That goes beyond the realm of the sport -- an attack with intent to injure.
