Cale Makar speaks about hitting Kraken forward Jared McCann

  • People saying it shouldn't be a suspension...it was 3 seconds after the puck was gone and he took their leading scorer out of the game and maybe the series. One game is the absolute minimum he should have gotten.

  • Dude let his emotions come into play. McCann and him were going back and forth the whole time. The fact that he said, "didn't mean to finish him that hard" and "I think they would have done the same" feels like he kind is admitting it was premeditated. The game speed and emotions get high, but awareness has got to be the priority when other people's health is on the line. Its when you are just trying to get back at the other guy that someone usually gets hurt.

    • No.. he meant to check him. It was a perfectly clean hit. It looked bad the frost time I saw it live but the replay it’s clear he isn’t powering through his arm like I thought he did in real time. The kraken player didn’t hit his head on the ice. So if he did hurt his head it was from the boards. He wasn’t expecting a hit. Shit happens. Hurting anyone is never a good thing. No intent. But there is some responsibility in the play maker and that Cale. They reviewed the hit after calling a major and reduced it as it’s clear there’s no follow though with his arm and it was a clean shoulder contact. Was late though.. hope the other guy comes back tonight.

    • @Damon I wasn't aware that it was OK to hit someone when the puck is nowhere near close to them as they didn't with good cause to not expect to be hit. It was cowardly. This hit wasn't "Just Hockey" it was cowardly. Now if he had the puck I would say differently But the puck was nowhere near.

    • The only problem i have with this take is that when I was watching it I thought McCann was going to the corner to get the puck as it fell. If I can think that, it makes sense he could too on the ice. Still a bad late hit, for which he deserved the penalty and suspension, but I don't think this was a premeditated hit that happened because he was angry with McCann.

    • @@sakalaathletics while I understand where you're coming from, your takeaway/justification is naive and bad. Both players are world class athletes who can tip a slapshot in with centimetre precision, while moving amongst 9 other moving individuals. They both can obviously track a puck if they chose to - they're literally the best in the world at it. If Makar didn't see it, he didn't want to, which means he just wanted to hit McCann.

      @EarlofSedgewick@EarlofSedgewick Жыл бұрын
    • @@EarlofSedgewick Goalies lose pucks when they are high enough that they are against the crowd or black uniforms, so I think it is possible that even an elite skater can lose track as well. It's possible that he targeted him, but that would be a new part of his character we've never seen. I just think that he thought exactly what I was thinking while I was watching, and it isn't so far fetched as you make it seem. We'll ultimately never know what he was thinking, I just think his defense has merit, and isn't just him doing damage control. I do appreciate your response though btw it was well written

      @sakalaathletics@sakalaathletics Жыл бұрын
    • @@sakalaathletics I appreciate your response as well. Fair point about the possibility of players to lose track of a puck - I don't think Makar was really watching the shot intently (but that's because I think he's mad about being out of position, and possibly at being burned by McCann). This doesn't clear him though. If a player stops watching the puck and hits someone who isn't playing the puck, that's a penalty. If he injures, that's a suspension. When the hit is 3 full seconds after the play, that's gutless. That being said, I think Eberle's boarding on Cogliano was waaaaay worse because of the obviously compromised position he was in
