(Disclaimer: As mentioned, there are going to be some exceptions. But more often than not, eggs are pretty darn tough if external forces are evenly distributed around the entire surface area.)

  • In third grade this happened to me (and the two other members of my team, it was in teams) in an egg drop competition, we had somehow swiftly won even though our design was very flawed and then the teacher told us to slowly remove parts of our contraption until the egg broke upon contact with the ground. Pretty soon it was at the point where people were chucking our egg into the sky and it would hit the ground and bounce slightly with no damage.

  • Another awesome video guys! Love the subway joke. Any chance you’ll elaborate on part 2 on the relationship between the arch-like structure of the egg and grass? What is it about grass specifically that prevents the egg from cracking? I would assume that the surface area of the egg in contact with a flat patch of grass would be similar to that of a flat piece of concrete. Perhaps it’s the elasticity of healthy soil that makes the difference?

  • From what I'm aware of, there's also an evolutionary aspect to the structure of an egg that doesn't necessarily apply to modern day chickens but instead their ancestors. It is inevitable when you make a small bowl-like structure at the top of a high tree that sometimes things inside of this tiny bowl will fall out, including bird eggs. So over time birds who laid eggs that could survive drops from such heights had more offspring on average than those that didn't, and natural selection did the rest.
