I think you can really see just how much Steve Irwin inspired Coyote Peterson's approach to animals. His response to the gila bite was exactly how I'd expect Steve to respond - never blaming the animal, explaining why it did what it did, and making it educational the whole time.

I didn't think twice when I heard it while watching the video, it wasn't until Desmond pointed it out that I realized that is kind of funny, guess he didn't really know what to say and was a bit panicked.
I was bitten by one of my gila monsters in the late '70s. It hurts! He was captive raised and habituated to humans but remained touchy. The other one never tried to bite in the 33 years that I had him. Every animal is an individual.

@@cliffordbowman6777 Yes, after buying him as an adult of unknown age. For the last eight years I kept him in the bathtub when I wasn't using it. Because they had access I introduced him to my dog and cats so everyone knew that everyone else belonged there. Most didn't want anything to do with him, but orange cat Sam jumped in to visit Herman at least once per day during those years.

I was born and raised in Tucson, and have only seen a Gila Monster in the wild, once.... I don't recall the full story as this was nearly 20 years or more ago, but I remember dad calling me out to have a look. He and someone else had the Gila Monster in one of those small metal garbage bins, and I think they were waiting on someone to come pick it up to relocate it away from the houses. Beautiful, and terrifying lizard, it was probably 12-18 inches long and did not look pleased with its situation. Honestly, I love the desert!

I got to see a Gila monster just last week, but sadly someone had hit him with their truck. We were way out on a service road, in the Sonoran desert. He was still alive, and rolling, so I have tried to convince myself that he was dazed, and would be okay, but sadly I don't think he will be so lucky. He was absolutely beautiful. My 23 year old son-in-law has lived in Arizona his whole life, and had only seen one other. He is an avid hiker, so I know just how rare it was to spot one.

Coyote is a man with superior knowledge of his body and bodyreactions. Mark is just asking if Coyote crossed a line where they need to worry. Pain is pain but not neccessarily dangerous. As you could see, Coyote said to stop filming as he was scared by himself. Sometime he wants to continue filming for educational reasons. Thats all about marks askings. "Are you ok?" "No... no lets go to a hospital" could be 1 of 100 time come out.

It's important that people realize that wild animals demand respect and that if you go out and handle them, you only have yourself to blame if you get hurt. So far, I think you're doing a good job, and that you're clearly doing what you can to live up to that responsibility. I respect that.
+Thutil EXACTLY 99% of people want to BLAME the animal which really pisses me off. You are spot on with what you posted. There recently was an article about some dumbass that was hiking in grizzly bear country and went off the path even though there were signs posted EVERYWHERE not to stray off the path well this dumbass did and guess what he came across a mother grizzly and her cub(s) and was attacked and killed so what did the powers that be do....they killed the mother and relocated the cubs to a wildlife rehab center or some place like that. People need to RESPECT nature if they are going to be out there in the areas wild animals call home.

It was never intended to be an episode but we made it after the fact to show that mistakes happen...and that they are 99.9% of the time due to human error and NEVER the fault of an animal...especially an animal like a gila monster. My job is dangerous, we are always very careful...but eventually you do make a mistake...and there is a lot to be learned from it! Thanks for watching :)

I love this video, I love how educational this was and how it could teach SO many people ignorant or not that animals are not little creatures for humans to mess with for any reason. Plus this is such a life lesson moment.
I know it was 6 years ago but I still appreciate this video, Because my cousin had allergic reaction by accident it was in her backyard and she is the Mexican side of the family and we were visiting her in New Mexico and one just happened to be in her lettuce garden on accident and she got bit. Luckily I watched one of these videos immediately told my mother that we should take her to the hospital and I told her that you know I showed her the video and you know all that and luckily she actually believed me watching a video. To say the least it saved my cousin‘s life and I’m very thankful for it even though it’s him it’s been six years later this video helps and it’s educational and I appreciate it even though it’s six years later I keep saying that I know but it’s highly Appreciate him no matter what time it is. Thank you very much for making a video it’s educational and it saved my cousin’s life so thank you no matter what time it is you are a godsend and keep doing you and please don’t put yourself in too much danger!

When I was quite young, me and my mom were on a hike. I went to tie my shoe and I saw a giant gila monster chilling under a rock. At the time I was really invested in lizards and reptiles, so I was really fascinated. It was a cool experience!

I saw a gila monster on my hike through sunset peak AZ yesterday. I stopped in shock as soon as I saw it thinking it was a rattle snake. I saw legs and was relieved and excited seeing the biggest wild lizard I've ever seen. I had no idea it was venomous but thankfully it walked slowly away from me and I was able to get a phew photos of it.

I love how even after getting chomped and stung and spiked, he’s still so respectful of every single living creature he comes across. The amount of respect and admiration he has for all of nature’s beauties, even the terrifying desert centipede, always makes me smile. Coyote is such a good and kind person
I saved a squirrel from my dog the other day, and he(the squirrel) got my finger pretty good. (Not the first time it’s happened either) It’s important to remember that animals don’t understand human behavior. They don’t know that you’re trying to help, or that you’re just looking. You approach a wild animal, they think “this thing is here to hurt me.”

I live in Tucson in the Sonoran desert. Watched him get bit by the tarantula hawk, giant desert centipede, and gila monster. I'm never leaving my apartment again.
