    • I, for one, am not 'throwing shade' at either one. I did not even know that Shelton was bi-racial until he made his remark about how hard people like he and Tiafoe have it because of the way they look. They played a great and entertaining match and we should be proud that they choose to represent the USA in a sport where we once were so dominant but has since seen the development of outstanding players from Europe, South America and Asia in addition to Australia, which has long been at the pinnacle of achievement in this sport. I also take Shelton's word that Tiafoe is helping needy individuals to develop their tennis skills and I presume that Shelton, who has relatives highly skilled at tennis from both sides of his biracial family will be doing the same. I look forward to the day that everyone gets a good opportunity to advance to their utmost whatever their sporting skills and interests may be.

  • Ben is such a thoughtful champion. Good way to show respect to Frances.

    @KCNwokoye@KCNwokoyeАй бұрын
    • Shelton knows when a moment calls for gravitas. Yes, Frances' "screw you" comment got a laugh from the crowd appreciating levity, but it was Ben's acknowledgement of: 1) the historic nature of the final, 2) the legacy nature of his win, and 3) the power of representation for people of color that drew true respect from the crowd. These little distinctions of character continue to separate Ben from the pack of American compatriots arguably too distracted by money & fame. He's serious about achieving important goals for himself, his family, and for US men's tennis which is in DIRE need of a Grand Slam champion 20+ years after Roddick. Play time is over. We need players with BIG weapons who know how to WIN.

  • Ben's massive serve and better movement made the difference today, with a very consistent backhand also helping. Quite a classy speech from Ben after Tiafoe's playful "screw you, Ben". Shelton is 275 ATP points away from overtaking Fritz (who was just dumped by Musetti in the first round of Monte Carlo) in the rankings as the top US player, with barely any points to defend until the US Open. He's 1000 points from entering the top 10 and repeating his awesome 2023 US Open run won't be easy, so he would have to go deep at Wimby to reach that milestone. He could also do some damage at the Olympics, depending on the luck of the draw and how much he can build up his game consistency.

  • What an exciting match! Tiafoe and Shelton’s play styles match up well. Ben Shelton was referring to creating positive archetypes for groups of people whose members make up a small percentage of professional tennis players (and tennis in general). It’s good to generate new and positive archetypes for cultural or ethnic groups. It’s good for all people. Tiafoe blamed Shelton jokingly “damn you Shelton” or something like that. And mentioned his 3 atp trophies? Or is that just clay courts? See if he can continue at a high level and lower errors for trophy #4. My criticism in both Shelton and Tiafoe’s speeches is that they didn’t say very much about each other’s tennis.

This guy is getting closer to the top ten and his game still has a few flaws that he can and will eliminate. If he does, he will be able to compete with everybody. I still expect him to become a top five player and stay there for many years. Sinner seems to be in his own sphere, but Alcaraz will strike back. Medwedew and Zverev will be there for many years and maybe Rune will improve and get there, too. Probably these guys will dominate the next five years.
