  • Fantastic! This match reminded me of the 1990 US Open quarterfinal match between Sampras and Lendl. Lendl faced a younger opponent who had all the shots (big serves, volleys, strong groundstrokes), but Lendl's mind kept fighting to the very end. He definitely deserved all the $ he made from this game. Lendl is an example for being a champion.

Taking Becker to five sets in the semis was his best showing against the top grass court player at the time. • @@fundhund62 Part of it is the slow courts, in combination with the fact that volleying technique has become a lost are for the players currently coming up. Even when a player makes a good volley, the ball sits up, allowing a baseliner time to get to hit for the pass. Guys like Feli Lopez or Karlovic try to get in as much as they can, but there's no reward for coming in because the court is so slow.

The commentators were right -- during Lendl's career, he never played very well after questionable calls were made against him. As a seasoned Pro i would've expected him, not Becker, to be the one who best handled the questionable calls; by the way, the calls weren't THAT bad & so Lendl looked whimpy by not just playing-on. • I don't know if it's because I only saw the first set until now, but from the classic tennis matches I've seen, this is the worst by far. Both guys double faulted a lot, couldnt return a lot of serves, and their only winners where volleys. I don't like the fact that today's game almost doesn't have any volleys in it, but this is worst. the 2000s, late 70s, 60s and early 80s are way better in my opinion, at least from the matches I've seen. Not that I don't like Becker, or lendl, I love watching Becker x Sampras in the 1996 masters cup, or the legendary match between lendl X wilander, but for me, this one is not even close to the level of tennis played in those other decades. Although I understand the historical relevenace of this match, I just didn't have a lot of joy watching this first set. Hope it gets better, as I will still finish this match, and if I do, and change my opinion, I will express it. EDIT : literally just after I said that, Becker shut my mouth by playing 4 incredible points to break.

  • The two overrules in the 10th game of set #4 were done *on purpose* . Of course, the US Open has been full of favoritism so that the US players win more. Still, it took a lengthly rain delay, two overrules, and a Boris Becker at the top of his game so that Lendl would never officially win Wimbledon. In my mind, Lendl won Wimbledon.

    • He had to take the net away from guys like Edberg, Cash and and Becker. His backhand (groundstrokes and return) was not solid enough to withstand a continued serve and volley assault from these guys.
