Awesome Restoration of Rusted Grinder

Welcome to my restoration channel! If you like restoration videos or restoration asmr videos you found the right spot! In this video I restore a Craftsman(Sears, Roebuck and CO. USA) Bench grinder that I picked at an auction for around $60 USD. This is a 1/2 H.P. Ball Bearing Capacitor Ginder.
Thanks for watching, I appreciate the view!
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I tore the bench grinder apart and sandblasted the painted parts. We fixed the wiring and had the capacitor bench tested at our local electric motor shop. I replaced the bearings. I used a tumbler to clean up a lot of the small hardware. I wanted a more stationary base for the bench grinder so we built a new one that fastens directly to the floor. Overall the restoration turned out great and I am happy to have this bench grinder in my restoration shop. It should come in handy!

  • When things are built to a high quality standard, they are worth restoring and rebuilding. You will never see a better made grinder than this again, and now it’s restored it will last another lifetime. Outstanding!

  • This press has worked like a charm for my projects kzhead.infoUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with. This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

    • This looks like it’s from 70s maybe early 80s. Definitely looks like a model I remember seeing in the garage that my dad had. He use to brag craftsman for the lifetime warranty replacement. Guess we finally got the answer as to what lifetime they meant. Regardless of what decade this grinder was made in, it was made back when they made things to last. Even as a kid the 80s was a hell of a time to be alive.

  • Hang some small, cheep household HVAC air filters on the wall behind the vents. They will keep dust and debris from flying everywhere and keep things a bit cleaner on the wall as time goes by, and they can be replaced easily as they dirty up... They could be a fire hazard if your spraying sparks, so consider that, but if it just dust they could keep things much cleaner around the bench grinder. Nice restoration

  • That grinder came out really nice. I wasn’t sure if the finish was in the paint or in the metal before you stripped it. But the hammered finish paint made it look good. I have my grandfathers old Black and Decker bench grinder. Still works fantastic. When I got it, I cleaned it up and replaced the power cord. The original one was all dried out and very brittle. Plus it wasn’t grounded. The new cord was the same size wire with a ground and I drilled and tapped a boss on the bottom of the grinder to ground it. Seeing how yours came out, I might do an overhaul on it soon. Anyway, great video!

I bought it off of Ebay from and estate of a jeweler . I am going to do a youtube video on that and I also have an American Made solvent tank I am going to restore and also to that on on KZhead its probably over 50 years old .I already have the pump and found and American made parts cleaning brush for it too. I love old school tools they will never make things like this again and love to see them restored the pride and craftsmanship is dead and gone and will never be back . Great job I love it

I have been trying to get my Chevelle restored and that is shut down too. I am doing a frame off. Its a factory Heavy Chevy they only made for two years its a matching number factory four speed car. I want to do the rest on You tube if everything goes good. You really made my day I cannot thank you enough you really cheered me up and have given me incentive to launch my youtube. I am very nervous I am still learning editing but all the youtubers tell me the same thing. Hey we were nervous too and we just did that first post and that is all you need to do. My first video is going to be about a Jet Ski it never had the oil changed on it and the oil filter was frozen on there and I could not get it off even with a pair of huge channel locks. No room I had to take the inside of the ski apart and half the part of the engine apart to get to the oil filter it kicked my ass. This is going to be my first post. Your reply really cheered me up and I really needed it . Had three people in the past week treat me really bad so I was really down in the dumps. I need to move out of here so bad the people are horrible here and I am working on that too. Thank you thank you for cheering me up you made my day dude I really needed this ! 😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉

  • Suggestion? I personally would have replaced the capacitor. I like to restore old tools and actually USE them. If that beauty gets put back to work, there's a good chance the capacitor will not last. Those old wet capacitors just go bad over time. A modern replacement would be fairly cheap. Just my opinion. That and $5 might get you a cup of coffee.

  • Nicely done. One suggestion: replace the capacitor next time. Electrolytic capacitors dry out over time and need to be replaced. That old one could fail at any time.

  • Brilliant work. Be advised however that it is necessary to have thick paper discs either side of the grinding wheel so the metal washers don't bear directly onto the wheel. Prevents cracks!!

  • Nice neat job. Looks as good as new. The only additional thing I might have done would have been to make a couple of sheet metal spark guides to go on the back to aim the hot metal dust from those guard ports downward (Rather than straight at that nice white wall). Some would insist on making a water trap to capture the metal dust too, but personally, I don't do enough bench grinding to warrant that.

    • Thanks much and thanks for the advice! I do need to do something behind soon. The wall isn’t looking as white! 🙄

      @RebuiltRestored@RebuiltRestored9 ай бұрын
    • Or stick a piece of sheet metal to the wall for the sparks / dust to bounce off of, a bit faster to get in place and leaves space for access to clean / maintain the tool.

  • Absolutely a piece of Art. Nicely done, hey by the way, I've built so many square/round tube stands for grinders, Vises, presses. Theirs always a "Ting Sound" from the Tubes being hallow. Take the grinder off, and drill a hole big enough to fill the tube with Sand. It Takes the Ting out and also makes it Heavier, No Walking. Hope this helps, just a little Info.❤

  • 5:06 Me too...me too. Also, if you notice the scanning black bars in your footage at 20:19-20:25 you can get rid of them by adjusting your shutter speed to a divisor of 60 if you're in the US (1/60, 1/120, 1/180, etc) or 50 if you're elsewhere in the world (1/50, 1/100, 1/150, etc). This corresponds to 60 Hz or 50 Hz frequency of the electricity. There's also some cameras that have an anti-flicker setting that automatically adjust for it!

  • That was an awesome video! I love those old Craftsman grinders and have cleaned up and replaced bearings on several. Just a suggestion, but I would loosen the bolts that attach the grinder to the stand. Looks like you squeezed the rubber feet down pretty tight. If you loosen the bolts a bit, that would allow the rubber feet to take up some of the vibration on the grinder and make it run smoother. Great video and great work! Thank you for sharing!
