1933 French Hand Cranked Grinder - Restoration

Restoring an old french hand cranked grinder from Val D'or , very possibly dating from 1933.
As the title suggests, I restored this wonderful and complex tool. My dear friend from OTND Restoration channel sent me.
I started the restoration, by disassembly, as usual. As I have seen in other restorations of the same tool, I expected the sprockets to be simple, attached only to the holes in the gearbox. I was very surprised when I opened the gearbox and saw that it also had ball bearings. That was the moment when I realized that this restoration is a bit more complex, but at the same time even more satisfying. This restoration video is a little longer than I usually do, but I did it to make the work satisfying for you. Apart from asmr restoration, you will see many things restored using hands, others being restored with the help of the lathe. You will also see sandblasting, powder coating, making new parts on the lathe machine , diamond dressing grinding wheel , making new parts on the milling machine and etching brass for making a new name plate for this beautiful tool.
I worked with pleasure as I do every time, and this will be seen in the video. I hope you enjoy both , video editing and restoration.
I also want to thank you for your patience in waiting for my videos and thank you for giving me love in your comments. Cheers , David !

  • I just wanted to stay thank you for your videos. I have anxiety that gets worst before falling asleep or even, like now, middle of the night, I wake up, my brain goes haywire, and I found that watching your videos calms me down. I don't worry, I don't stress as much. I just enjoy the process. So thank you

  • My dad had a rusty grinder almost like this. Would send hours as a kid in his workshop sharpening anything I could get my hands on. Really brings back memories. Now it lies hidden away in a cupboard... Would love to restore it one day and display it with pride in my workshop. Thank you for the video! Your work is amazing.

    • Answers the question of "how did this thing looked and worked when it was new". Some stuff from about 100 years ago was pretty complex technology. Hand cranked and otherwise human powered machines tend to be quite interesting.

I love seeing the different approaches between you and your restoration "colleagues" here on youtube - The slight differences are interesting, especially seeing how you all end up with amazing results. Another factor I love, is seeing all the different kinds of old equipment; Items that aren't made anymore, not to mention the rugged quality of stuff made to last, compared to our modern plastic equivalents, is really cool. Can't wait to see all the projects you have to share in the future! Thank you, and good luck in the next ones!

    • Had a hard time enjoying the rest of video after watching this. Should have spray welded it to build up metal. Then turned it down to right size. Just because it looks good does not mean it was done right. I am being very critical but this is what they do for a job.

      @jamedatkinson594@jamedatkinson5942 жыл бұрын
    • Hi @I’m right you’re wrong! Normally yes but depend where that part goes after. In my case, that parts was not damaged if I take it a little of material. I read it what Jamed wrote and he has right. But not in this case. Where needed to remove some material ( I removed to the gear where the handle is attached) for making it smaller and to can add a bush after. I attached the bush to the handle and after that they fit perfectly.

  • wonderful restoration! the handle crank looks like it was cast, I've heard that cast iron needs to be pre-heated before it can be safely welded, does this matter for a small object like this where the entire section is heated by the welding or did you pre heat it off screen? I really like that you added a brass core so that you didn't have to remake the wooden handle.

He was grow up in Europe and now he live in USA and told me there is not the same sense of humour like here. I don’t say there is bad and here is good. Just is different. No offence to any wife or women, I love my wife and 5 months ago she gave me a beautiful daughter but here we can make jokes about us.

    • @@CoolAgainRestoration Congratulations on becoming a Dad! Agree that humor is different from place to place. Looking at how things start, such as why the married man cheated on his wife, or say how did the once loving marriage fail, it seems that it didn’t just happen suddenly but came about over time, lots of small things,little things that didn’t seem to matter. That’s why I made the comment. All the best,Bob

  • Really like that you don't resort to deliberately damaging a project by immersing it in moisture, of whatever source. You take what you find and make it better. Your attention to detail shines through, as usual. Well done Sir 👏
