Restoration of a 50 year old Huge Rusty Drill Press. Awesome result!

2023 ж. 13 Қаң.

I got this drilling machine for the price of scrap metal. The headstock raise/release mechanism did not work, the headstock lock lever was jammed, the drill chuck was rusty and jammed, the on/off button was missing, all the electrics were rewound with duct tape. BUT the motor worked!
Restoration process.
First of all, I completely disassembled the drilling machine into parts. Some control levers were broken and new ones had to be made on a lathe.
I cleaned the parts of the hull using a paint remover and a rust converter.
I really like to use hammer effect paint on the body parts. Since the case is made of cast iron, it has an uneven surface and it is the hammer effect paint that hides all these irregularities, while the spray paint would only emphasize all the flaws.
During the repair was completely moved the engine. Rust was even on the rotor! Replaced all bearings and painted body.
The bearings on the spindle were also replaced!
In general, the work was not difficult but took a lot of time, and I will be grateful for the "thumbs up" pressed so more people will see the video and I will compensate for the cost of repairing this drilling machine! THANK YOU
I enjoyed working on this project, and upon completion, I had another "helper" in my workshop, who will often appear in the following videos.
So click "subscribe" and be sure to "bell" otherwise KZhead will not notify you about the release of a new video.
Good luck everyone and take care of yourself!
Sincerely, Max!

  • This press has worked like a charm for my projects kzhead.infoUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with. This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

  • Well done!! I like the choice of a hammered finish to hide casting imperfections. I also applaud your use of sealed bearings to replace the old open bearings in the motor and in the spindle. I'm glad that the quill was in good shape so that you didn't have to tackle restoring that, they can be a real pain. Overall excellent workmanship.

  • Great restoration job and has given me some food for thought. I'm part way through the exact same thing myself on an old large format, heavy duty pillar drill I was donated by a late friend. My problems are that: 1. Mine seems to be considerably heavier with a massive cast body weighing about 20kg stripped of all parts!! The drill fully assembled was a real struggle to get up on the bench to dismantle. 2. It has a 60cm column which took a LOT of persuading to separate it from the body but now the large cast iron base collar won't budge. I think it is going to have to have one of my special citric acid baths for several days then the old heat and candle wax trick to separate it. 3. There is no base and no table, plus no rack/pinion lift. Consequently I'm having to think carefully about what to use. I'm currently thinking of a thick piece of granite for the base as finding a cast iron one seems remote as well as prohibitively expensive. Even a 1" steel plate would be quite expensive whereas I can get granite offcuts fairly cheaply and drilling using diamond core drills is no problem at all. Counterbores are a bit challenging but even they are not too bad. 4. The lack of a table and no rack and pinion lift also needs addressing and a retrofit of some kind seems inevitable. I can live without a table IF I can get/fit a suitable rack and pinion to take what will be approx 40kg with all the bits and a motor mounted 5. I never had a motor with it but I have a VERY good condition, as new, 3 phase, 2.5 HP motor that I plan to use with a suitable single to 3 phase 5HP capable VFD I already have. 6. The large 1/2" Jacobs chuck that came with it was rusted solid but that was citric acid soaked for a week and then stripped & cleaned and now looks really good. 6. The quill seems in good shape but I plan on replacing all the bearings as you did and using proper rubber sealed units. I can never understand why companies fit steel sealed or even non sealed bearings when, even retail, bearings are so little cost. 7. The quill return spring proved to be broken on dismantling but a new one was easy to obtain from Ali Express. I wish I had access to a sand/bead blaster like you have. I could do a great and quicker job of stripping all the bits back to base metal rather than wire brushing/flap wheeling/Scotchbriting that I have to do. I just have to dedicate some time to it once the weather gets a bit warmer - my shed has no heating and it's been -4°C during the day which is VERY cold for the UK at this time of year. Once again, a great job done and a really nice set of paint jobs and overall restoration! I hope mine turns out as well.

    • First, I'm amazed at the text size of your comment. YOU have spent a lot of time to write all this, you have great patience (unlike mine 😁) Secondly, you are right about the sandblaster. It makes the job much easier and faster. If you watch my earlier videos, I mainly used electrolysis to remove rust, as well as a brass brush and grinder attachment. Thirdly, working in the cold is not at all pleasant. Although my workshop is heated, but when it is minus 25 Celsius outside, the temperature in the workshop drops to plus 10, and I don’t feel like doing anything with my hands at all. I am sure you will succeed with your machine, you can handle it. And when you're done, I'd love to take a look at it. Can you send a couple of photos by email? My email is in the channel description.

    @Mechanic_Simulator@Mechanic_Simulator Жыл бұрын
    • Насчет смазки токарного патрона категорически не согласен. Также не согласны мои патроны, в т.ч. Bizon, имеющие масленки с завода для смазки передней части улитки. А внутрь патрона, со стороны сателлитов, закладывается консистентная смазка.

  • great job !!! whenever you want to put a bearing on a shaft, the BEST solution is to heat it at 80 deg C with a hair dryer or a heat gun (no flame, torch...). it will slide on that shaft very easily. at that temperature no damage it is done to the bearing ! why you didn't sandblast also the other parts ?

  • From number wire coming on the motor you have 3 speed motor giving a total of 15 speed with belt one set will be low speed, the other set will be medium speed and 2 power together will be high. It Looks good, I do think a powder coat paint would’ve looked better but that’s my personal opinion.

  • I'm surprised you didn't sand the stator. Not that it isn't a big deal. I just thought it might help. But what do I know!!😉😃

  • Суровый был станок! Кто-то на него даже ручку переключения скоростей от грузовика поставил :) 6 скоростей, 5 вперёд и 1 назад, как на КамАЗе, может где-то ещё такие есть.
