Dude, these are the villains in every SFF…YES! That was my reaction exactly! They’ve read way too many dystopian SFF that their framework for what is normal acceptable behavior is terminally warped.
Honestly I'm still in shock at the sheer moral bankruptcy of the Chengdu WorldCon administrators. I have some empathy for the social pressures that could theoretically push someone to go along with it (if the suggestion of government pressures are even credible). But it's truly so galling to read through these emails and seeing so many people fail the SFF community.

Im so glad this finally got outed and resolved. It's just wild how they thought they might have gotten away with it. But Im glad Glasgow are doing it much more openly, and I like that they keep us updated on what's happening. 🗺

Just wanted to say thanks for doing this video - I’ve dropped off a lot from the Booktube community and so a lot of this news passes me by these days and it was great to have a good summary of it. Not going to lie, it makes me a lot less excited about going to my first Worldcon this year

Yea I am very dependent on the short list, but 2023 was a very lackluster reading year for me so not sure any list would excite me if I'm honest lol but if I end up going to glasgow for world con I will for sure vote!

This reminded me of when I first realized that I could turn the map upside down and it was just as accurate (thank you West Wing lol)
I knew the HUGOs would prove a problem or challenge in China, expecting mostly legitimate according to The HUGO Rules, Chinese nominations in the Literature Nominations, but I was annoyed at how impossible I found it to try and get membership for the worldcon in China, as the Washington Wordlcon was in December when China won the bid and I couldn't attend, and they wouldn't let you join the following year at Worldcon, and their Website was impenetrable.
Yea I didn't even try. I used my Chicago con membership to nominate and after the short list just decided to observe this year, and really glad I did in hindsight

You're absolute right about them being the villains of the sci-fi they are fans of. And it's true whether they read conservative old-school sci-fi, or modern "woke" sci-fi. What they did is universally reviled. 🦹♂🌏
