The Worst Romance Book I Have Ever Read | Paper Princess (The Royals) - Rant review

Hey guys, I'm back and I'm spilling the tea (just kidding). I know I haven't been around for a while, but I just had to make this video. I wanted to return to youtube for some time now, but I could never figure out what video to film. Every idea that I had just ended up not being executed. But then I read Paper Princess by Erin Watt and I just HAD to rant to someone about it. So I guess that's what this video is, me finally realising why I do booktube: to talk about books!

Hi! My name is Leonie and I am a 22 year old girl who loves talking about books! From YA to non-fiction to classics, I read it all (although fantasy will always be my fave). I live in the Netherlands and go to university, but make booktube videos in my spare time :)

She was a stripper just 'cause it's a night "job" so she can actually go to school, get good grades and get the shit out of her situation. NONE of that is said in this video, only the bad story sides are evoked. I respect the fact that a lot of people did not liked the book, but showing only the defaults is not really fair

  • As a bookseller, it pains me whenever I see young girls asking for or buying this book /series(I mean 15 and younger). Whenever a parent asks for the book I usually try to tell them that it's not appropriate for teens younger than 17 but they don't always listen and I don't want to get the kid into trouble. But yeah, so many young girls are reading these sort of books that set such a bad example of what relationships are/could be.

    @elenanicoleta5127@elenanicoleta5127 Жыл бұрын
    • I agree with this, I was at a bookstore looking for ' it ends with us' ( for context I'm 19) and when I finally found where the books were, there were young teen girls looking at them! It really scared me how these 13/14-year-olds were buying ' it ends with us', especially now that I've finished the book I'm very worried about what the impact was on those girls.

    • @@paulogaspar8295 You do realize that people encourage and consume this type of media because it's the most common type of young adult romance story? People enjoy and love such toxic relationships because that's what the books (and lots of general societal standards) tell them a healthy relationship standard/ideal is. If more healthy relationships were pushed in young adult fiction then it would benefit those teenagers who are only just starting to go into relationships. And I'm certainly not only blaming the authors or only men, because this kind of romance book exploded that's what sells. There's also nothing wrong with writing morally ambiguous romance stories, a lot of people enjoy these stories because they're so bad or enjoy well written stories about morally ambiguous characters that actual provide deeper thinking. however to consume that type of nuanced story requires critical thinking skills in the reader that just can't be present when their brain isn't fully developed and/or the only type of "love" story they CAN consume is a extremely unhealthy and often borderline abusive kind of "love".

    • As a 17yo girl, i have to say that now i would be bored af reading this type of books. I also read books like this when i was 14 and 15 and let me tell you, i never actually wanted to be in that kind of relationship. Just because we like to read about them doesn't mean that we can't separate fiction from reality and we don't see all the "red flags" and all the toxicity and abuse that goes on in that type of situation. It's the same thing with the morally grey vilains in fantasy books - we like it when he's a murderous 500yo fae, but that doesn't mean we fall in love with psycho killers irl. And I'm not saying there's not one single 17-18 yo who wouldn't enjoy reading books like this just because i personally wouldn't, but it annoys me when i hear people say that it's wrong for younger girls to read them. It's not. Those books are *targeted* to them, written specifically for them. And just because they're 15yo doesn't mean they can't think for themselves and separate the right from wrong.

    • @@NH-sp3oe My comment never once implied that people can’t like this book. Criticizing a work of art is not the same as criticizing the people who enjoy it. People are allowed to enjoy anything they want no matter how messy it is; there’s also not a single story that can’t be scrutinized in some way. But you can still like something while acknowledging its flaws and issues. And I’m sorry, but this book has several issues, one of them being what my original comment explained. Like it as much as you want, but that doesn’t mean other people have to like it too/that they can’t complain about its messages. It also doesn’t mean that we dislike you personally for enjoying it. Also, saying something is only fiction so it doesn’t matter ignores the impact that a book can have on people, both positive and negative. This is a very weak argument in order to deflect from a book’s problems. “It’s fine cause it’s fiction”? Nah.

  • I managed to read the whole series and let me tell you it is BAD and gradually it becomes worse. In the first three books I was so creeped out by Reed's behavior towards Ella. So what happens is that after the first book it turns out that Reed did not sleep with his father's mistress while with Ella but she tries to pin him as the father when pregnant. Then she dies randomly. And Ella's father is alive and comes back for Ella. Reed is framed for having murdered the mistress but it turns out that it was Ella's father who did that and then Reed's trilogy ends with him being safe and with Ella. The next 2 books are worse as it is about Easton. He is super creepy and stalks a girl, Hartley but she does not want him. Somehow they end up kind of getting together and suddenly she gets into an accident with the twins. Her family also does not approve of Easton but by the end the twins and Hartley recover. As Hartley's father is a fraud so he get caught and abandons he and her younger sister . Callum takes them 2 in as well. And they all by the end live as a family with Reed and Ella getting married. Ps this is from my brother's account. I hated this series. it was unrealistic dramatic and sexist. So I decided to spoil the whole series and tell how disgusting it is.

  • I read the series and it concern me how the grooming ( The father's mistress's relationship with his Reed and I think another brother got blackmailed into sleeping with Ella's technically stepmom) was not addressed at all. Like the actions committed by those women were not bad because THEY ARE LITTERALLY UNDERAGE KIDS, but because blackmailing and faking pregnancy is bad. They are, but not as much as being A F*CKING LITTERAL CHILD PREDATOR. Not once in the whole series was the topic mentioned and it glossed over how SERIOUS of a crime it is. Like if the gender were reversed and it was grown a*s men forcing themself on teenage girls, this would have been a huge problem. It's really toxic and it glamorizes and normalizes p*dophilia toward boys.

  • As a grown woman, I don’t mind reading trashy romance novels, but young girls shouldn’t be reading this because Tiktok or whoever told them to. These types of novels are definitely not for kids. Not just because of the toxicity in the relationship but because, even to teenagers, relationships are complex and they deserve better role models than what is shown in books like these and YA novels.

  • What I find so ridiculous is that's there's this common trope that one person being affected by substances--not both--somehow can lead to having _incredible_ sex for both people. If both of you are affected, then being clumsy and sloppy and things not working well isn't gonna be a huge deal because they're like that together and they don't care so much or don't realize that things aren't good, but when only _one_ person is affected. Yeah, being more horny is incredibly common for substances, but that doesn't mean they're going to be an incredible partner. Quite the opposite actually. It takes applied skill and conscious effort for things to be shatteringly incredible, yet that fact always seems to be ignored during these scenes throughout all media. Yeah, being more relaxed helps with blood flow, and increased dopamine and adrenaline can help, but you _aren't going to be clear-headed when you're under the influence._ MDMA (molly) actually impairs sexual performance even though--when under the influence--the desire for sex and _perceived_ satisfaction can both be increased. Studies show that use of MDMA increases the desire for physical contact and proximity and NOT sexual experiences and that's because it's an Empathogen-entactogen. Those drugs increase empathy, communication, and feelings of connectedness. Alcohol screws EVERYTHING up _especially_ in large dosages. There are conflicting studies of the affect of alcohol on sexual desire and behavior, but it is absolute that actually _good_ sex when you're fully _drunk_ doesn't exist. The higher the blood alcohol levels, the worse _everything_ is. Increased risk taking and worse performance although better _perceived_ performance. Small dosages of a very small number drugs may actually increase performance, but the more and the longer they're consumed ruins it. Increased sexual risk-taking is universal with substances, and skewed perspective creates the illusion of things being better, but performance is almost universally inhibited in various ways for anyone engaging in such activities. If people would just do some RESEARCH. I guess more trashy romance writers need to do the scientific research like the octopus monster smut book did. I think it'd be funnier if things _didn't_ go well. To use Sims 4 metaphors, there can be the Wants to Woohoo whim for both people, but afterward, the unaffected Sim gets the "unsatisfactory woohoo" moodlet and the affected one gets the "excellent woohoo" moodlet.

  • I read it all without any spoilers. I didn't know the hole I was digging myself into. It was lolita with a slightest age progression. It was a ride. It was horrifying. The ending shocked the hell out of me. Never a girl was so used by everyone in a book. I wanted to hug the protagonist and send her to therapy to solve her daddy issues, they're really strong in her. I didn't see her purity as a "I'm not like other girls" trope, but as the last rope of protection her brain maintained. I think the ending could be that. Maybe no other books. Just plain ugly, and terrifying. If it was more psychologically based, it would be better. The smut was sad, truly sad. It just showed her daddy issues and power imbalance.

I also hated how Reed just followed her command when saying that Easton couldn’t come to his own brothers football game. Also, Easton wasn’t wrong when he said that she carried Reed’s balls in her purse. The way Reed chose his girlfriend over his brother. And then they were just cool 2 days earlier? And idk why they had the right to ban him from flying. Should be Callum’s call, not Ella and reeds. I also liked how Gideon didn’t like her either. She became awful. I’m glad Easton had his happy ending.

It simply means you figured out how to get a good enough reach to sell a lot of copies within a short span of time, and if you managed to reach the top on even one day within a selling period, you're a bestseller. It really means nothing but is good for the "algorithm" and gets you even more reach.

The most satisfying thing was the end, when she finally left and all of this stupid parade ended. I was actually glad that she was heartbroken and unhappy and that shows very well how much I hated this girl and she was the most likable character in that playhouse. I won't spoil the book but the reason she was heartbroken was so out of nowhere, that it was comically stupid. Ok she said it, the father's mistress. Also she missed to say that MG stayed in the house because "daddy" promised her a lot of money for every month she stayed there. Shady?

It was just as the book you reviewed (ranted): - author stating about every male character how hot and sexy they are, so you can be sure that guy will be a love interest - love interests being manipulative and rude - author forgets to describe the environment of the characters so you actually get confused that when and where things happen - character cries about how she should not feel ANY sexual attraction whatsoever BECAUSE she is a teacher (?!) And these were only on the first 30 page, and it was the start of a 3-4 part series. :"D So all in all, you got a new subscriber!

By the time i realized this i was already advanced, like i did not mind the naming of s3x,alcohol and dr0gs(it would not have been the first time i come across these themes but like super lightly, never some privates coming into graphic description) ,anyway at some moment i got bored and kinda skipped to the ending as fast as i could(i wanted to know about the mistery i could not care less about these 2d guys lol but even that got boring), and googling the rest. i needed to clean my head with something else, and i learnt a valuable LESSON: it''s difficult to not judge a book by it's cover but at least see the genre, make sure the genres are what you are looking for. And that morbid curiosity kill the cat, or your brain lol. Personally i don't remember anything in this book so i guess my brain protected me, the little i remembered is that all boys were trash and that they made a huge deal about the v card, even the boys if i remember correctly as some sort of "sort of love sign "wtf, my mind is foggy, i was a TEEN and at that time, i feel, i was more sensitive to these harmful tropes, the same way i couldn't tolerate horror as now that i can watch graphic violence of a slasher film no prob in my 20's . i hate the quirky girl trope, i came to process this in my late teens. on the bright side it was a pirated pdf so i did not lose any money lol. i guess they followed the cliche of harems in anime and she was supposed to end with the tsundere? idk i wish i had read something better as it was not something healthy for a teen indeed.

    • @@konataizumi1201 yes, i guess i put my expectations too high to this piece of craps. The closest thing i could find to haruhi, not ouran, is the comic humor me. Its a slice of life, and though at first it gives ouran vibes it goes a different route, both haruhi and charlie feel queens unlike the quirky bish of this book. Its like there's this tomboy girl who gets mistaken as a boy in the rich school she goes with a scholarship. She has to secretly work to look after her little sibling against the school rules but does not have other choice as her dad ran away and left her alone with her brother. At the same time some ass paranoic celebrity from the school thinks "he"(charlie) is stalking him when our sarcastic queen just has bad luck of meeting him everywhere lol. And well she must keep the charade until graduation before the social services realize. It has comedy,drama,etc. It updates slowly but is good. You can find it on webtoon or tapas(the last one you get a page per week when on webtoon the author updates the whole chapter once a month)

  • Are we not gonna talk about how the plot is incest. And YES adopted siblings count as incest.

    @shadowsparda5152@shadowsparda5152 Жыл бұрын
    • Yeah incest and inbreeding are different, inbreeding is having kids with biological relatives over generations, which can cause genetic defects, incest is being attracted to a sibling, biological or not

  • I know people say not to judge what others read but I’m not nice so I’m gonna say it,,, I’m deeply concerned about young teens reading shit like this and maybe we shouldn’t recommend it. The romance genre in general scares me I won’t lie.
