Even though martial eagles are the largest of the eagles in Africa, it doesn’t make catching one of Africa’s largest lizards any easier.

43-year old, safari and photographic guide, Rodney Nombekana is well known for his safari tours and wildlife knowledge when it comes to the Kruger National Park, and shares his passion with his guests on every trip.

On one of his safaris, he captured this incredible sighting of Africa’s largest eagle taking down and feasting on a monitor lizard. LatestSightings.com caught up with Rodney as he shared the events of that day with us:
“I was on a safari drive and went up to Ngotso, near Satara camp, to look for the Ngotso lion pride and the resident leopards there. We found one of the Ngotso male lions but he was alone, so we sat there watching for a while. Trevor, one of my friends who was also on the same sighting, spotted a Martial eagle that had just caught a monitor lizard!”
“It was incredible, I’ve never seen anything like this before! Two great sightings in one place, but all the cameras were pointing at the eagle, and no longer toward the lion. After watching the struggle for about an hour, I still needed to serve my guests breakfast, so I took them to their favorite spot, Timbavati Picnic Spot.”
“We came back from breakfast and noticed that the eagle was still busy trying to take out the lizard! In total, it took about 5 hours for the lizard to finally give up and so the eagle finally succeeded with the catch, which was definitely something to witness. We then left while the eagle fed on the well-deserved meal.”
“The bush is full of surprises, you never know when you will find a unique sighting and just when you think you’ve seen it all, something new comes along to surprise you once more, so be present and enjoy while nature takes its course!”

  • I had an eye injury a few months back where a tiny sliver of metal ended up in my eye. Your eyes are extremely sensitive. Is there any other part of your body where a tiny bit of sand can cause you to stop everything? Your eyes are like that. My whole head was in pain from just a sliver of metal. The pain level this lizard went through as it was being killed must have been incomprehensible.

      @adonislimes6156@adonislimes61563 жыл бұрын
    • Rhys D I actually do.... the vast majority of predators target the old, sick & weak specifically because it’s less dangerous and requires less energy for them.

      @adonislimes6156@adonislimes61563 жыл бұрын
    • Rhys D First “barely” is a relative term. That being said prey animals don’t have that luxury of “another day” if they fuck up. If a Lion screws up, guess what? there’s several other million impala it can choose from. If Impala fucks up *once* it’s game over which is why an animal running/fighting for its life goes to such lengths to survive. So yes, outside of outliers or extreme circumstances like starvation... I stand by my statement.

    • @@michaelurgesenior3641 I’m well aware that there’s billions of interactions and. few million species of animal. I’m also well aware that virtually all predators are *highly* efficient, opportunistic and universally target the old, sick & weak because it’s once again easier on *them*. If the majority predators targeted the most difficult prey there’d be a whole lot of dead predators and the ecosystem would have long collapsed. So no, I don’t sound dumb.

  • Yeah getting killed by an eagle is one of the slowest deaths in the animal kingdom. 🦅🦅 (year later edit) I see a lot of y'all missed my point about it being "one of" not "the slowest death" in the animal kingdom. 🤦🏾‍♂️😅

The wild dog or hyenas would definitely be a more violent death, but which one would u rather(hypothetically) the painful violent death that may be over in about 30 minutes, or have a huge razor bird come rip small bits of flesh from your neck and head area until their full, come back at a later time and keep feeding off of you until there's nothing left which is the worse way to go?
