Honda Transmission Slipping FAST/EASY FIX
Jen's transmission in her 2004 Honda Civic started slipping real bad and then became un drivable. I looked up the P0700 / P0740 codes and it seems replacing the trans is a typical solution. Let's pour some diesel in it instead and see if that fixes it. I wouldn't recommend 2001 to 2005 Honda Civics. This one is junk in comparison to the 1996-2000 generation imo.
I also ordered this filter amzn.to/47LZaxn to put on the cooler hose and help capture crud in the system.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!

The shop is on point…looks great. I’m not one to typically be jealous…but, that’s pretty nice brother. You’ve worked hard and deserve it.
Thanks man, yeah it's nice to have things organized again
Man…….that shop looks great! Won’t it be nice to have everything within reach in a toasty warm shop this winter?Oh, BTW….. good job on the Honda trans. We should all be so lucky 😊
Absolutely. Something like Chris’ shop is what I’m aiming to turn mine into eventually. Just the right size to have enough space and be able to heat, and everything in its own place!
@@NNKH2 You've really taken advantage of the vertical dimension in organizing stuff. I definitely am jealous- my garage has low ceilings.
@@NNKH2it's nice to have Jen's motility safety at its highest during winter time, cause gus isn't getting too many free rides, but Jen, she could get a free beer or ride anywhere in the lower 48.😮❤
Love these random fix videos. Some cars you can get silly with and sometimes get some great results! Awesome work dude!
Hell yeah, nicely done. Good call on checking the pump flow. This is a great illustration of the difference between most folks who just remove and replace stuff and a guy who understands how things work and doesn't immediately discard them when there is a problem. Cheers from Chicago!
Nice little video man, this reminds me of a story from my dad. My dad is a independent mechanic in central Oregon, owns and has run his shop alone for almost 40 years. Repairing mostly Mercedes-Benz and BMW. He tells me about his repairs sometimes and something like this came up, a Mercedes e320 with a Transmission problem, dealer and other mechanics wanted to replace it for 3k but after some testing dad found it was a blocked ATF line. Replaced the line, did some other stuff, 500$. The difference between an independent mechanic and a dealership mechanic.
Hey Chris. Please restore Jens headlight lenses also. She’ll see a lot better at night.
Just gonna say. 😂
She could do it for another her video!
Add some L.E.D.s also...
Turtle wax used to have a $9 kit at walmart and I didn't even need to use the sanding blocks. Now sure how good the kit it now but the paste they gave basically took off the haze with a little wet wiping. Used the clearcoat wipes and it was pretty good!
Its an easy fix, toothpaste even works to a certain degree, but there are plenty of products that work, including metal polish.
Solid save on this fix, much better than pulling and replacing. Also shop/banner really looking great.
Yeah definitely way easier! Hopefully we'll keep going for many more miles without any other issues. And thanks again for the banner! Yeah looks awesome
How did you know it was 8 ft on center or was that just how it came
@@LAactorI knew based on the dimensions there was no other likely way to build that wall pole barn style so I ordered it intending for it to span two posts
Looking forward for an update to see how long this lasts, hopefully it gives jens many more trouble free miles!
As soon as i heard the symptoms and the whining noise, immediately thought trans fluid pump. nice fix.
Thats awesome! I bet that Jen was really happy to have her Honda back on the road. Lets clean up those dirty headlights so that Jen can see better for night driving!
soooooo happy, Richard!!! :D
Yeah Chris Get some clear acrylic lacquer to those lamp lenses bro ! Give a little attention to prep with wet & dry paper, Wiper down with wax n grease remover. A little masking or slingshot with thin cardboard action. And couple of light to medium coats of aerosol clear later n hey presto... step back & see what you got ! It wouldn't be the last time your going to have to do it over but you going to have perky Jen ready to sing & you joining in for the chorus my man !😊
And LED bulb conversion.
I'm thankful for you posting this. My best friend brought me his wife's 2003 Civic LX sedan a week ago because it was doing the same thing, just not quite as bad. I drained and filled the trans, drove it, then did another drain and fill. They said it was a major improvement. Then I got a call on Monday that it was back to being just as bad, so I started sourcing a good used or refurbished transmission for them until I found this video. Needless to say, I just picked up 3 gallons of DW-1, a quart of Lucas Trans Fix, and a gallon of diesel. I'll post an update on this comment later tonight once I've finished and let you know if it works out for me. I figured the worst case scenario, my friends are out $100 on this fluid and diesel, and we'd be back to searching for a replacement transmission. Better than jumping the gun and buying a $1,000+ replacement trans AND a ton of labor on my part if this can take care of the problem.
Update: It worked great! The high pitched whining is gone. The lack of power (ability for the transmission to move the car & shift gears) is completely fixed. The only issue this one is still having is slight slippage between 1-2 & 2-3 at certain speeds.. But it's minor compared to what it was. Being that these friends of mine just want to get another 2-3 years out of this car, I think I've saved them from either replacing the transmission or getting rid of it and taking on a new car payment now!
@@zachpeterson2135wow great fix! Do you think another round of this “diesel medicine” would completely fix the transmission? Also, did the transmission have any codes stored?
@MrSamPhoenix That car did not have any stored codes. And I ended up running 3 total gallons of diesel fuel through it (probably 5-6 flushes total), then flushed 4 times with brand new ATF each time. With the final fill of ATF, I also added a bottle (1 quart) of Lucas Trans Fix, which I think helped massively. They're bringing it back to me in about a month to replace the timing belt & water pump, so I'll be doing another transmission drain and fill at that time with new ATF and another bottle of Lucas.
@@zachpeterson2135 well done 👍👍 and thanks for the service update.
Yep, gotta get all that goopy sticky old fluid out, and wet clutch packs clean so the can grab again with the new fluid. Good deal 👍👍👍👍
Hi Chris, the main things is your making Jen happy and that's all that matters.
Dude nice fix. That thing has another good 100k miles in it for sure.
My first time watching your videos. As a retired mechanic of 40 plus years, I’m impressed with how you worked through the steps. Yay, it worked. 👊. Love your shop.
I like these random videos almost like will it run and drive videos. Keep them coming Chris
I'm sure Jen appreciated that very much.
Score for 10$ Honda ATF DW1 . 13$ at my dealer. Had same thing happen on Lexus RX300 . Whining pump and no go! Dropped pan changed fluid AND filter ,add OEM Toyota fluid and runs like new. Love your channel
You need to quit apologizing for the videos you post. We watch your channel because you are a nice guy with a passion to fix things. If you want to fix Gus’ food bowl we’d all watch it!
Correct, I learn something new about each of his videos 😅
That's crazy how effective that was. Thankful to older Subarus for having an external oil filter style can filter on the outside. I don't think my programming would allow myself to put diesel in a transmission.
yea, sad manufacturers moved away from serviceability and then tell you its a "lifetime fluid".
@@M.TTT. LOL it is lifetime, the life of the transmission. Money making project.

This was extremely helpful. More than you know. I've been exactly there. I split open the bmxa trans to change the internal filter. Got it back together. But decided to use a different Trans just like you did. I went through with it and changed the tranny removing it from below. Went the extra mile and cleaned primed and painted all the frame and everything nice. In the end it the replacement Trans didn't work. I gave up and scrapped a perfectly good covic out of frustration. Man I bet that diesel and air trick would have worked for me in the first place. That's why I love you. Thanks so much for your channel.
Sorry you had to scrap the car.
Your shop looks awesome Chris and so organized! I bet it’s even warmer now since you have a real door now and not a tarp for the winter!
Great job!! I love the shop too, looks good!! I was happy to see you didn't have to put that other transmission in. You have a great attitude about it all, for sure!
YES! Lets get Jens car back on the road!!
Best KZhead channel by far. Best mechanic by far as well. Thank you very much for putting out these videos for us to enjoy.
Great video, please do share these, no need to apologize. Love any content from your channels! You're one of the handful of creators I really look forward to seeing each week.
Chris, I worked for Honda for 38yrs & p0730 & p0740 were death sentences for the transmission. Put a used one in & replaced those completely torn compliance bushings in the front control arms. Shop is looking amazing, very jealous!!!
Great job, Chris. Knowledge is power. You've probably helped a lot of people with this video...
Nice job Chris. I changed my 2001 CRV trans oil like engine oil. It must have worked all these years. I also thought it was strange that changing the trans oil was all that was recommended . You’re awesome Chris for helping Jen out. She loves that Honda.
Chris, that is a TOP fix, logic and bit of testing, great video my man!
I really enjoy these videos about Jen's Honda. I have the same car (4 door version) so I love seeing how to do things. I changed my valve cover gasket watching one of your videos. Fixed an oil leak I had.
That lift makes things so much easier, another top job, thumbs up
Man I wish I had seen this video before having the transmission in TSX rebuilt! Brilliant thought to back flush the internal filter. Hopefully this saves someone else a ton of money in shop fees
Great fix! I'm sure many people will love this easy repair for their own Hondas. Keep up the good work!
Chris this really shows your level of skill and professionalism of mechanics to take what most would consider to be a doomed $2k repair and simply break it down into a routine maintenance job. Fantastic. Really fantastic. Shop is looking mint 👌
This was great Chris. I love a simpler project that brought a great result. I am driving a 2003 Sable Wagon. When I first inherited it from a friends estate, in the summer of 2022, I took it to a local fluid change chain and had the oil and atf changed, and the rad flushed. Turns out, when I had the car to my new mechanic, that the monkeys didn't change the atf. When my mechanic checked, he said the atf had probably never been changed, and certainly hadn't been changed a year ago. The proof of this is how much better it drove and performed after he actually did an atf fluid and filter change. This video hit home. The trans in my car is reported to be a weak link. I think regular changes will keep it on the road longer. You did some great NNKH work on Jen's Civc,
Great Fix, Chris! Jen must be Stoked! Really enjoy your videos. 👍
Excellent!! Nice to see you not just rip out the trans and “wing it”. That’s been my philosophy for a lot of repairs… surprisingly it works at lot of times! Even if you still have to swap out the transmission… GREAT content! I’m sure Jen must be happy to have her car back on the road!
Your shop looks great. Awesome job with shop. Thanks for sharing. Love your vids.
Not surprised you fixed this at all Chris ...great approach!! The shop looks so nice !
I am glad that you were able to save this. I have a 2002 waiting in Mom's driveway across the state, waiting for me to get away from grad school to finish putting everything together after replacing the head gasket. I wish that I could have saved my 1999 Accord, but it had a leaking transmission--then Mom drove it into a minivan.
that was very cool to see you just spitballin' a fix. Nice job! Only thing missing is Jen's reaction.
"You being you..." Sometimes called a dog with a bone. Never give up, never surrender!
Now you and Jen need a couple rugrats running around the yard with Gus learning the No Nonsense Way!
Great video. Good luck on the life of the transmission. One thing you might consider is videoing of Jenn cleaning the haze off of the headlights on the Honda. Cheers
Great ingenuity on this fix, no nonsense for sure. By the way your shop is looking like you'll have many years of enjoyment with it. Chris and gussmans man cave taken to a new level. Thanks for the video.😊
Thanks Chris. Your out of the box thinking and knowledge is very impressive and helpful thanks for sharing.
Great fix Chris!, always learn something from the vids, shop looks amazing👍🇮🇪
Amazing, thanks for doing this. I’m going to try it on my brothers older civic that is having the same issue.
Awesome shop man!!! Great job on the civic!!! Love your channel!!!
Could you add an extra filter on a cooler line? Make it some what serviceable then.
Yes I actually just ordered an inline filter to put on the cooler hose. I forgot to mention it in the video
Good idea
While such a solution would obviously collect the contamination, it will also add additional pressure drop which could have negative effects. Granted so does a clogged suction strainer. But I would be careful about using too small or too fine of a mesh on an inline filter. Just something to consider.
I actually had one of these. Same issue that non-serviceable filter was the death of the transmission I had to get it rebuilt. Wish I would have tried this though.
Nice job Chris You are an excellent mechanic and your shop is so cool
From my old dirt bike days, to my wife’s macan transfer case, the fluids get goopy and sticky, preventing the disc packs from grabbing, hence slippage. A good flush and new fluid works a lot of the time. Who knew? And much easier and cheaper than replacing a trans or transfer case. Cool video and channel. 👍👍👍👍
2001-2005 Civic auto transmissions are prone to failure. Speaking of transmission solenoids, 80% of cars for sale with trans issues "just needs a solenoid" according to the sellers.
Always enjoy ALL of your videos...Always interesting and informative...Always like your out takes like this one about Dominick's Original Pizza sign ...Great Job! Keep on KEEPING ON...

An amazing fix for now,,,and a great saving of man hours of work. Keep us updated on this fix would love to see the final outcome. Great content as ever and appreciate you sharing your day;)
Now that’s a twofer. Fixed the car and made Jen happy.
Jen is worth every minute of your time and then some.
Bro I love your channel I can watch all your videos all the way thru and not bat an eye, that's how interesting and tuned in I am while watching ur videos...
I appreciate that! Thanks!
Excellent troubleshooting and repair process you truly are an expert mechanic
Glad you fixed that, Jen looked a bit distressed by it, if she's as attached to her Honda like I was to mine I can see why. Round here the old civics like that are one of the few older cars that seems to survive.
My old crv had an inline trans filter that was easily replaced. Reminded you of a fuel filter in shape and design. Just fyi.
All your videos are very informative and enjoy seeing the little hound too !
You have become my favorite go to channel, Chris. ❤
Yeah that's fascinating. Never seen Mustie1 pull that off. Well done Sir. Feel like you are breaking ground with your creative tech. Excellent video!
Well done. Magnificent work! I hope you get many years of smooth running from the Honda. Cheers.
I have a 09 civic. It has 187k on it. I've put a 110k miles on it myself. In a year and a half. Because of my job. Great cars.

Master mechanic. Loved this vid, so sick shop!!!
Wow! Now that's taking absolute control of a ~$2500 situation! Backflushing muck using the hydraulic lines and diesel. Genious
Nice work! I didn’t think it would change anything... I was totally wrong, GREAT THINKING. That’s a major win.
Looking at the carnage 🤔 my diagnosis is that Jenn has a heavy foot 🦶! She likes to take off fast 😂
You the man! Favorite type of fix.
Genius! Nice work NNKH!!
Your shop looks fabulous! I know you’re tight for space but I’ve seen shops three times a size that were not as organized as you are.
Wow! Just wow!! That’s absolutely amazing!! Great job!!
I’m impressed. Shops looking great by the way
For anyone interested. I just did this to my 2006 Acura tl with 130k miles. You could hear the whining pump (I think that’s a good indicator if ur in the same boat) I used a donor banjo bolt with transmission hose to connect to the trans filter up top (tl/accord v6 does not have trans cooler )I drained the trans (not running) and replaced the fluid that came out with diesel. I ran it up to temp then shut it off and forced air basically into the filter housing. I did this twice (startup then shut off then use air) before draining the diesel. New grime appeared on the magnetic drain plug! Long story short this process worked! It’s 2/24/24 and I will update when it fails or if I do a filter change and or inspection
I forgot to mention my TL would only have gears for about one minute after cold start. After that it would basically act like a false neutral in any gear.
So basically you unhooked the factory line and banjo bolt and used a junkyard bolt and cutoff hose and shot the air in there???? Did you hook the other 1 back up after the reverse bj thern run it???Mine makes the same sound. all gears turn to neutral after 30 or 40 mph, high rpms until I stop and restart then I get another mile or 2 .
You can use your original banjo but I had one on standby. It’s a pain to separate that rubber hose so I just ran a “new” hose and banjo. Reverse bj with half diesel (I actually did 100% diesel bc I had nothing to lose but it messes with viscosity and flow).
Yes I hooked up the original line that runs to the back of the transaxle. Otherwise it would just pump fluid all over the floor. The trick is to push all fluid backwards into the bottom of trans and hope the magnetic drain plug catches it and you drain the rest of the filter plugging material
Thanks for sharing Chris excellent job
I’ve always loved the way those old Hondas start. Love ‘em
Great video! I always enjoy it when you pit your skills against a tough situation, and Jen's Honda was certainly a worthy challenge.
great idea for fixing transmission!! Shop looks GREAT..........and big sign NNKH.....nice !!!
I hope you got video for a future episode of Jen taking the first drive in the Civic after you fixed the transmission. Good job.
Chris, You R the MAN! I wonder how many trans rebuilds or new ones were put on needlessly. Shop looks amazing. Really enjoyed it.
Great video. I mess with Hondas all the time. This might come in handy some day. Really wish I could get this organized.
Love these videos, as many of these as possible please. Legendary save
Shops looking good Chris. Love the channel my friend.
MAN YOUR SHOP LOOKS AMAZING!!!!
Thanks
Your shop looks better than ever! Well done!
Thanks
Pretty important video! Lot of people are paying big bucks getting into a situation like this. Toyota , Honda .. I don't know how many have 'unserviceable' transmissions but if you change the fluid early (30K) you'll probably be ok , change it late ... then it starts slipping.
thanks for the intel and teaching. cheers from France
Shop looks legit dialed in. Love the banner. Your success with Jen's trans has got to make a guy wonder how many other folks had to give up thier only car because of that. Kind of make me sick to think about it. Regards
And how many shops unwilling to do a repair and wanting to hose people on a replacement too
Jen will be happy🙂 nice job awesome diagnosis👍👍
While I don't completely agree with Honda making the filter non-serviceable, if you follow the maintenance schedule it has you change the three quarts you get out of the drain plug every 30,000 mi to prevent the screen from getting clogged.
yea i think he said she never changed the fluid ever. it was so dark too. maybe wouldnt have happened if she changed it 3 or 4 times
hard lesson with lucky ending@@boost800
Honest smart mechanic hard to find these days good job man
Our 01 civic started slipping a week before you posted this video, and we just did the flush with diesel and backflow with air and it fixed our trans. It's been working fine for three days of pizza delivery. Thank you
still working for you?
Any update in you civic i have the same problem right now
Awesome video. This is going to be one of those most referenced, important videos for DIYers to try before taking everything apart.
