How to: 2001 - 2005 Honda Civic Automatic Transmission Removal
In this video, I show you how to remove an automatic transmission from a 2003 Honda Civic EX. This process is very similar for 2001-2005 Honda Civic LX, DX, EX, VP. This is the 7th Gen civic equipped with the D17A1 and D17A2 engines.

Probably one of the best removal videos I've seen. A real confidence builder. Can't wait to tackle mine.
thank you!
I am impressed as I know very little about this service and you explained it clearly. Listing tools needed and giving all the mm sizes needed for each removal and number of nuts and bolts was extremely valuable.
You're very welcome!
and this girl has done her research, so im impressed with her comment to the guy as it shows hes a good teacher. I should know, I'M HER BROTHER! HAHA
This is by far one of the best detailed videos I’ve seen. Great job! ✌️
thank you!
Great vid. You did a great job of showing every step along the way. It makes it a lot easier for people who've never done the job to not find out that there are things that the video didn't show and then they get screwed up.
I tried to make it to where someone who has never touched a car can do it.
Great video. Very knowledgeable and explaining everything in a way that's easy to understand. Gave me the confidence to tackle the job myself. Can't thank you enough!!!
Best of luck to you man
Great video and like that he gives the tools needed. I think I can pull this swap off in my driveway now. Keep up the great content
This is an excellent tutorial. My 05 EX has the 2-3 slip when cold so I'll probably be here soon. Funny cuz it's been slipping for the whole 2 years I've owned it and hasn't ever gotten any worse! Still unnerving
so clear and concise. I actually believe that I could do this on my own now
I have a noisy manual transmission is annoying me every time am driving my 2005 civic, I replace the clutch ones and noticed the transmission don’t come out because the engine on top and the main frame on the bottom so it makes me think on send the car to the junkyard, like many people I get bored by the car but my family learn shift stick on that car and love it, and the gas prices on California, makes me think on the little civi it is a warrior, it just don’t die, and all I being doing you is replacing the oil and filter all this years, and the car is fine in side out No crashes, you reali inspire me to replace or fix his little transmission and keep it longer thank you, good job, you have a gift, you save my old civic god bless you
Great video, I’m going back to a big old truck. I’m glad you have the patients for cars like this but I had anxiety just watching. I already had a blown head gasket two weeks after buying the car got that fixed and not even a month later the trans🤯
The biggest 2 issues with these😂
I have a big old truck too, 02 ram 2500 diesel 6 speed manual, but these little cars are SO much cheaper to maintain for driving back and forth to work. I can’t believe how cheap the parts are for these things after daily driving my truck for 14 years 😂. Tell your friends to stop voting for these commies or our kids will be driving these things around still 30 years from now like they do in Cuba
Been working on stuff for years you made this look so easy hope it goes half as good for me as it did for you
Best of luck!
About to attempt this on my Daughter's Civic. Thanks for making the video!
Following this step by step thanks man you really know how to explain stuf and put the camera at just the right angles
Thank you! I hope it helps you out!
just dropped my trans today, all thanks to you man. gonna try to install the junkyard one tonight from your other video
Heck yeah!
I woke up early in the morning to witness greatness! Thanks for the 101 on removing a 2003 Automatic Transmission.
I hope you got it squared away
Thank you for your knowledge ! Realy good video.
You're doing a good job bro, simple and very much useful, love the Honda, I'm driving 1992 accord with so much fun, and gona do clutch maintenaince like this video, tks so much and subscribe to support your channel
When pulling parts at the junkyard I always take engine/trans off a wrecked one that way its a better chance of everything running good.
For sure!
Yup cause why else would a nice car be in junk
Do you mean it’s bad to take a transmission from junkyard?
is this sarcasm?
same here in order for a vehicle to be involved in a wreck it had to be moving so the engine and transmission had to be working
You seem cool as hell bro a real genuine dude…I was a Honda tech for 6 years and you really seem to know what your doing this is exactly how I would of done it, not at Honda anymore but just a little independent shop but I have to do one of these tomorrow along with a 09 Nissan Versa and also an 07 f150… we ordered all 3 trannys the same day hopefully I can get them all done this week as long as everything goes smooth…wish I had some friends like you man everyone I know is a lame, keep up the good work bro
Thank you man, I appreciate it 🤟
excellent video, you helped me change my transmission, in such an easy way as you did in the video, really 1000 thanks you are great brother
That's awesome dude!
Extremely helpful man thank you
God bless you for your wonderful helpful video I did my transmission yesterday like a professional mechanic. Thank you so much 😀👍
Glad it helped
No you didn’t
I’ll make sure to save this video for the feature my car is almost at the 200,000 mark with its original Tran, this will help me in the feature I love trying new things and I been learning a lot about mechanics now thank you man
awesome, glad to help
When I started doing my own car repairs about 15 years ago, my father in law kept asking me, “are you sure you know what you’re doing?” By the time I completed a body off restoration of a 1996 Ford F-150 (including paint & body work), he stopped asking me that question. He now has me do all maintenance and repairs on his 2000 F-150. I may be a college educated city boy, but I love working with my hands. I would have done well in the trades. For my parents, it was college or military. I eventually joined the Alabama Air National Guard while in college. It was the ANG where I first started working with my hands. I love challenging myself and taking on more complicated tasks. The only way to improve in life is to constantly leave your comfort zone!
Great Advice,Makes it Easy for Us Garage Guys..Thanks Man..💯
Glad to help!
Professionals make it look easy....me about a day and a half to take the transmission out....Great video it helped me out alot
Glad it helped
You are the best, brother!! Thank you.
Man thank you so much I was completely lost you saved my ass.
Glad to hear that!
Very helpful! I wanted to see what my mechanic was talking about (trust, but verify).👍
Great video! Just did mine for the first time that 2001 transmission failure. First time and watched your videos first. Used to doing rear wheel drive vehicles. Roll Tide Man! I’m North Alabama.
🐘🤟
You make it look so easy, way to go,awesome video, thanks for sharing, love & respect from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Heck yeah!
Great video - Thank you for doing really great work

Great video simple and informative! 👍👍

Excellent video for car transmission removal!
Thank you!
Thank u for this I'm soon gonna attempt to take my trans out soon on my 01 lx this is gonna really fun in my driveway 😆
I've done plenty in my yard
You did good man
Nice work! That's a bit of a procedure.
Hopefully it's a procedure you feel comfortable tackling with the knowledge of this video!
Thank YOU! your video is very informative
Glad it was helpful!
This is the first time I have seen your video, and you are the only one who seems to know what they are doing with the Honda transmissions. I am a retired auto technician with 45 years of experience on anything from stock import and domestic cars to highly modified street and road race cars. The only thing that I disagree with is when you supported the engine with a jack stand. I prefer to use an engine support bar from the top but I also realize that everyone does not want to spend the money on some tools when they will probably never use it again. Anyway, for what it matters you did a great job. Thanks for putting out a quality video.
Thank you man, I really should buy one of those.
@@hondaresource they make some really trick ones but harbor freight has one for 90 bucks that works great on Honda and of course most imports. If you are handy with a welder and can fabricate fairly well you can make a vehicle specific one that would probably work on most Honda's.
@22:03 I thought you were gonna fix that stand lol! great vid
Meh, it was just keeping tension off the engine mount, wasn't supporting the car
Great work. Clear and concise presentation !!! Ron Hazleton, Pa
Thank you!
Thanks for that información buddy helping us alot
Happy to help 🤟
Great video. Had one in and out in 5 hours by myself
Nice 👍
Great thorough vodeo. Gotta do mine so this will be a big help. Thanks
You can do it!
Dude you are a champion man. Thanks very much
Glad to help
solid video man, gonn ause it when im elbow deep in my civic for a week
Heck yeah!
This was a very good educational video
Thank you
I like your videos real thorough. I have a question about my 01 Honda EX I have headlights no running lights no brake lights or dash lights . What do you think it would be ?
Great video thank you
Nice video! I had to do this to my Civic a year ago. One thing I did differently is I used an engine hoist to lower the transmission out the bottom instead of using a jack, I thought that was a bit safer since doing it this way eliminates the chance of the transmission falling off the jack. Also, when I installed the replacement transmission, I slid it under the car on a piece of cardboard and lifted it into position with the engine lift as well. Just another option :)
I have a nice hoist, I just find the hoist to be cumbersome.
@@hondaresource Makes sense, I just didn't want to risk the transmission falling while I was removing or installing it. If I did this more often I would get a transmission jack that I could strap it down to, but hopefully I won't be replacing my transmission again any time soon. I got almost 250K out of the original transmission and the replacement JDM trans supposedly only has 45K on it. Before I installed it I opened it up to change the filter and the old filter literally didn't have a spec on it and the trans looked perfect inside, so hopefully I will get another 200K out of it.
@@averyalexander2303 hey, I might install a JDM trans in my honda, how has yours been?
@@AaronFernandes__ It has been great, no regrets! There are a couple minor issues like the positions on the shifter not lining up and not having D3, but it worked great. Shawn H has a great video on the differences. I liked the JDM SLXA more than the US BMXA transmission because it was geared shorter for better acceleration. Of course that meant a higher RPM at highway speeds, but I didn't lose any MPG that I could tell. Only reason I took the JDM trans out a couple months ago is because I wanted a 5 speed manual, I put about 20K miles on the JDM auto trouble free.
@@averyalexander2303 Awesome! I might just have to go with that then! Thanks
Nice work! I'm about to do my mom's friday
Best of luck man!
I followed this video and pulled my trans out yesterday afternoon! Thank you for the great video! My car is an 05 LX model and the old trans is a bmxa. For whatever reason in my area the bmxa trans of the same year are twice as much as what I can get a US model SLXA trans for. Are you able to confirm that I could swap in a trans from an 04-05 EX model, North American made, with VTEC (which is an SLXA I think) into my 2005 LX car without VTEC? I just don’t want any problems, but they are literally half the price!
hi , this is a great video . Would a aux trans cooler help transmission life or valvoline max life or something else ? I'm thinking of getting one of these cars as a commuter , the one i'm looking at 2001 ex has 119 xxxmiles .
Got it done using this video, if your good with tools & start at 8am you will definitely have it done & out by noon. Even on the street!
For sure
Excellent tutorial
Thank you
Great video! Where did you get the lift? What brand is it? That is super cool
Bendpak 6xp
Wish you were here to help me get the Trans switched in the Civic I'm trying to get ready for my daughter's 16th birthday. Lol but I'm sure your video will help ty
I wish I could help. Hopefully the video makes it straight forward
Great vid. I have pulled Honda Accords and rebuilt them but not a Civic. I wasn't aware that I had to drop the subframe unlike the Accord.
🤟 glad to help
Hi Learn a lot from you I hope you give me more details about the dis car ....
Don't forget us little people when you make it big.
rofl, I hear ya big dog
Good video I’m trying to do mine Tomorrow thanks man
Good luck!
@@hondaresource Thanks 🙏🏼
Thank you. Great video
Thank you
Nice job and well explained, could you give the info for the car lifter you are using? I like it
It's a bendpak 6xp
This helped a ton
awesome!
Thanks whit this video ill will save money
Muchas gracias me sirvió bastante
awesome video man thanks for sharing! is the process for a k24 pretty similar? looking to do this on my 06 accord
Same concept but the transmission is on opposite side.
Do you have to reprogram the Tcm when doing a trans swap? Or is it just plug an play? Given your using 01-05 trans both being auto
Plug and play 🤘
Excellent work. Very efficient!
I got it out!! Thank you
Heck yeah!
Hey there, I]m thinking about buying a hoist in the not so distant future. I am semi retired so I don't do a lot of work and it would be all import cars with the exception of a Corvair I'm building which is pretty light. Would you recommend the hoist you are using? And if so can you give me the info on it? Thank you
Excellent video..
I’m doing the exact same job right now . Sub frame off but having trouble with bell housing 17mm impacted can’t move it . Can’t get much movement with the bracket bar . I’m going to sleep on it . Thanks for the video very helpful . My car in a 1:7civic 2002 .
Good luck!
use a 6 point impact socket and a breaker bar with a cheater bar slid over the breaker bar handle. It will come loose. Make absolutely sure you are turning it in the right direction. Counter clockwise.
Perfect bro
Thanks for the video
No problem!
Good work brotha
Thank you man
Got the Civic EX 2003 myself. Trans is slipping so will remove and put in new clutch plates, etc. Thanks for the video. Hondas seem to be engineered for micro sized parts and lots of stuff to break loose. Not my fav vehicle; especially buying it used with previous owner cheap on maintenance.
Nice video man
Thanks!
Good video I have a 2008 honda cívic it's the same if I want to remove the transmission
This helped me out so much thnx
Sweet 🤟
God damn having a lift looks so much faster
@@is.joseee6101 it is for sure. I've done plenty of them on the ground though
How do you pull the range selector connector free? Most of the connectors on my car are just a little stuck, but I've never seen a connector with two tabs like this one, so I'm not sure if I press down on both, then pull. Pretty close to damaging the thing.
Thanks for the video, you're a life saver. I just got done dropping the subframe and should have the trans out in the next few days or so. Quick question: Are JDM transmissions compatible with the US cars? I believe they are 3 speed, while the US ones are 4 speed for emission purposes.. but I may be wrong. Any guidance is appreciated! Just trying to figure out what type of trans to buy.
The jdm trans is different.
Yea
@@hondaresource actually, I swapped the slxa into my 04, everything is 1:1, only thing is there was one external sensor I had to keep from the bmxa, and then I also have a torque converter code which is simply from it having a different sized torque converter
Awesome 👌 thankyou!!
Welcome!
Thanks my friend
Got an 01 EX auto. Had the transmission replaced with a remanufactured one. Shop calls me up and says it's missing overdrive but otherwise shifts fine. Other than bad TCC solenoid(s), what else should I look at
Nice video. I would have called it excellent if you had made a bit slower and more clearly with video showing some of the things that you were in the engine. I think overall its a good video. It would be nice to see you replace some sensors on the replacement transmission and then installing it in the car
Were did you get that lifter from?
I had a separate question for ya, I’ve watched other videos of urs and was wondering if u know if it’s bad thing to just use RTV to seal rear main seal housing on a 04 civic ex D17A2.
That'll work. Use grey or black
Great job thanks for the help any links to the lift you have
Its a bendpak 6xp. I bought it from a retailer on eBay because they had the best deal at the time. I've since updated to a 2 post lift. That lift served me well for 3 years
@@hondaresource thank you keep up the great work
thank you bro
🤟
I appreciate the video. Never done an auto swap before, is the flywheel like that of a manual? Where you have to have it resurfaced. Thabks a ton!
no, its just a flex plate that bolts to the torque converter
@@hondaresource thank you so much! That would've had me stumped when I had it all apart. First swap successful, thanks again
We’re can I bye a lift like that one you have my friend
I followed this video step by step worked like a charm, but i now have a P0420 Low Cat efficiency CODE, could this be from not getting new gaskets on the exhaust?
I doubt it, unless they are very poor condition
This guy is fast af. I need some new impacts
thanks man, just lots of experience with these.
Good ,useful video.
Thank you
great info thanks you
Glad it was helpful!
