  • On the Great Lakes cruising in white caps and big rollers we say, “It’s a mite dusty out there”. Meaning, we took some pounding and gunnel washing. Those captains should trim their crafts’ nose up more and quarter cut waves on coming and in following seas adjust power to hang on save backside. Low power plowing through and nosing into on coming and slow roller coaster surfing on following seas produces a wet and unpleasant ride Craft size and matching power plus seamanship discernment makes a difference .

    • That, sir, is the most down to earth answer ever posted. Thank you, Cap, for telling some of these salt water boaters how to handle rough seas. I boat on Lake Michigan, and your synopsis of vessel handling in bumpy waves is spot on. Thank you!

  • 18 knots against a running tide through an inlet is a recipe for serious conditions. Every boat owner preparing to go out into the ocean in an open vessel should be checking tide and wind conditions and adjusting their schedule accordingly. It's absolutely insane that the only person we saw wearing a pfd was the tow boat US captain.
