In this video, I'll show you how to learn to roll your R's.
Many people (especially English speakers) still have problems with this sound and keep asking "How do I trill my R???"
Here you'll see exercises from the Russian speech therapist. So if you're having trouble with Russian pronunciation (or Spanish pronunciation), this practice might be helpful.
You can do it!

Real Russian Club Suppose that some people, like myself, have an actual tongue-tie , thus unable to do that excersise? Is rolling the R's just something I should give up on?
Nanashi no Mori, i have tongue tie to, I physically cant do this
When you will teach russian grammar
Do you have to have teeth to roll your R’s or can you do it with out? Some has got to know the answer to this question!!
I can roll the r while vibrating my upper lip at the same time and can't do it by itself I tried pulling my lips up and I can't do it
I am sitting here trying unsuccessfully to roll rrrs, and my cat comes over to me and purrs loudly. Show off.

hahaha. 😂😂
Bro, i tried it so many times, but it seems like my tounge is only rolling on the left side🤣
My cat seems to really like her voice. Leaves window sill to come listen. I think you could hang out if you bring tuna.
I think I just made every noise on the planet except for a rolled r
hahaha, I feel your pain
me too
Man I think my tongue is disabled.
All I want to do is learn latin ffs.
Me too
I've tried for years
It’s been months and I still can’t do it I’m broken 🥲🥲
Ur not alone

I want to point out that I look like a mental patient with my finger in my mouth, sitting in a dorm study room at 3-AM going “dledeledeledele”
ahjhahaha
My brother just came into my study room. Just imagine how weird that is with an earbud in my mouth going "ededleldedekdeldleldleldlelde".
Yu Syuan the Dragon haha, yeah I bet that was awkward. Someone else heard me from outside and actually knocked on the door to ask if I was “ok”...

Ok, I'm 22 years old, my native language has rolling Rs, I've never been able to do more than a bit of a roll as a part of the 'tr' or 'dr' sound. Using a finger for this exercise was kinda awkward, so I grabbed a Q-tip, did it for a bit with a Q-tip and then without it and OH MY GOD. It's still pretty sloppy, but I'm actually able to (kinda) roll it after doing this once! Hopefully if I practice it regularly I can perfect it, thank you so much!
Did you know? There are people in Russia who can't say that. They are called "Картавые", They say R like a german's R, but it's so cool and funny. Я и сам картавый, если что)))
So, have you mastered it yet?
I accidentally swallowed the q-tip and now i speak fluent danish....
awesome :D
XD
I almost choked on my q-tip! 😂
Lmao
So funny!
I looked like I was having a seizure when doing this😂😂😂😂😂
I watched countless videos, lost my hearts thousands of times...until I found this video......It works!!!!!!!!!!
Her: “Nobody expects a six pack after one day at the gym.” Me: Turns car around and goes back home.
Haha yess
I've found it easier to get a 6 pack than learn how to roll R's😂😑
wow the Q tip actually worked for me, i was pushing it like how u described, and i was like ouch thats painful, a minute later, i am trilling!!!! thank you i have been trying to trill the R for years !!!
This totally works! I spent 30 years not being able to do the "rr." I speak Spanish very well and wanted to be able to speak it correctly. I watched so many videos, read tips, instructions, etc. and nothing helped. I found this video and ended up buying the full course. After a month of doing the exercises and stretches, I woke up one morning and could do it! It's been a year and a half now :)
It took me 2 months and I can't do it perfectly but I didn't buy the course. I need more practice
@@TheMelopeus I didn't use the q-tip method, just the stretching and strengthening exercises :)
@@hannahgautsche5939 what do you mean by that? i cant roll my r's and ive been learning Norwegian and it doesnt sound as good
@@mickfleming9627 What do I mean by what? I did the exercises and stretches multiple times a day from the 15 dollar course that she has online, and after a month I could roll my r's.
@@TheMelopeus I practiced multiple times a day, everyday for about a month!
i give up, i will forever sound like a foreigner despite being born here
I relate to this comment too much.
I am a native English speaking speech-language pathologist and this is the first method that I have found that has worked for me! I am now able to produce the rolled r in isolation! Thank you!
I'm happy for you:)
Danielle Zelaya how long you practice?
Arief Kurniawan probably like 30 minutes at most before I was able to do it for a short amount of time
MISSING TECHNIQUE: This did it for me instantly after months trying: Lie in bed and tilt your head completely back. This makes your tongue rest against the roof of your mouth. Much easier to get the tongue into position while leaving it relaxed.
OMG THIS WORKS
wtffff i have put hours towards working on this and this is the closest ive gotten! i actually got some vibrations. hanging off the bed with a q tip in my mouth... the things we do 😂
@@jorepstein1 Awesome, thanks! After I got it like that, I was able to standing up too since I knew how it felt. I still don't know if it sounds right though since it s a different sound in your head than what the other person hears.
you're a lifesaver mate.
Half an hour of videos didn't help as much as this.
She had me looking like an idiot with a Q-tip in my mouth making dah noises …my sister asked what was wrong with me
I only watched the first few minutes and FINALLY figured out how to do it. You simply just have to place you tongue further back in your mouth! And then say the words with the double R.
Wow thank you
YOU DONT EVEN KNOW HOW MANY YEARS IVE BEEN TRYING TO DO IT AND THIS LITERALLY WORKED THANK YOU SO MUCH-
Love the accent. When she said "Q-Tip", I first thought she called it a " Cutie". That was cute :)
She:rrrrrrrrrrrrr Me:left the group
God, after years, and I mean years of not being able to do it, even as a Russian born and raised in Pskov, I could not do it - I was bullied and took speech therapy for years but still nothing, ig something changed because after using this video for literally about a month I finally got it - I finally feel... «normal» but do not feel like me, even if you are from a place where its used, do not feel like you're bad - you are always beautiful just the way you are
Mexican American here 👋🏻 who gets embarrassed speaking Spanish because of my inability to roll my r’s. I hope I’m successful in learning the ability from this vid. Thank u for ur positive words!
I know what it's like. I'm Indonesian, in my language the letter r is pronounced clearly. But, I was only able to roll my r's in my 20s and till now still struggling to put it into words.
@@anabanana9141 I love México i America, never feel ashamed, I know some may make fun of you but that is people just being people, you are amazing even if you can not roll your "R"
My degree is in Spanish and still can’t roll after 20 years. Is there surgery or something?😔
nice. im learning russian, i love it
This method works. Within hours I was apply to roll my tongue...not fluently but it worked! Practice makes perfect!

I didn't try the Q-tip trick (can't get up to get a q-tip; the dog's in my lap) but I did the tongue exercises and wow! What a difference! I wish I'd known "long and relaxed" was the key 40 years ago when I was struggling in high school Spanish. I'm confident that with some practice, I'll be able to do it without even thinking about it. Many thanks for posting the video!
As a Hispanic person who doesn’t pronounce Spanish too well because of trilled R’s, this has been the most helpful video for me. Thank you.
How are your Rs now? I hate not being able to say words like “perro”, “aburrida” and “ropa” correctly
I'm a spanish native speaker and i have never been able to roll r. You can imagine how hard it has been for me to grow up like this. I just gave up and move to France, no need for that stupid r sound here
lol that's a good solution.
U do need the rolled r in French as well😂
@@paigeskinner5748 no lol, we don't have that sound in French
@@LoXena although it’s not the exact same as Spanish there are rolled rs in French (I speak it)
@@paigeskinner5748 no
Thank you, I'm getting closer to doing it! This video has taught me more than all of the Trill/Spanish RR's put together. (I am learning Spanish and I am stuck)
Have you mastered your R’s?
Did you get a hang of it yet?
Im an arab and as you know arabs are master r rollers but i really regret learning it from childhood because im trying my best to practice my english accent and my insane r rolling really made it much harder for me
Pffft! Arab... Ever heard a South African speak? we roll our R's so much foreigners think we have earthquakes down here! Just embrace it.
lol. I did notice Arab's english with extensive Rrrrrs. It's kind of cute, don't feel bad. I can never do a rolling r, I thought it was genetic until 10 minutes ago. Now I realized, no it's not so I am watching videos now, and just a couple of minutes in, I have already done a couple of close ones. yayrrrrr! So don't be discouraged.
@@user-lf4td9xr4v Awesome! But if I can give you a tip... This video isn't very good. Just press the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth and breathe out though your mouth. You'll know it's working when you feel like throwing up. And if all else fails, watch videos of people speaking languages that roll their "r's" (Arabic, Afrikaans, Dutch)
Turkish people also can roll the r's very easily, just a fact
@@brkekr It's basically just native english speakers that have trouble rolling r's.
I am on the verge of tears in frustration. I've been trying to roll my r's for unironically 2 years and have never came close
Same here but 6 years
@@Musava Hang in there, brother. One day we’ll be able to roll our Rs like cats.
RIGHT ME TOO IM SO ANGRY
@@arawan2212 My wespects towawds you buddy
Never been able to except on accident. Want to learn Kazakh and Russian but this R rolling has been a stumbling block
I don't know how I ended up here. But as a native speaker of a language that uses heavily rolled Rs, I'll add this. Rolling R sound takes more air than other sounds. The air makes the tongue move, not the muscles. The tongue itself should be quite relaxed so the air can make it move. Using more air may help you make the sound at first; then, you can figure out how to control it better with less air once you get the feel for it.
My mom walked in and she thought I was deep throating my finger
I look like such an idiot right now while trying this hahaha
Thank you for this. I was given an Icelandic/Old Norse name, but I've never been able to roll the final "r," and even got poked at for it when I was a kid. I eventually started telling people my name was just Leif. I'm 30 now and finally decided maybe I can learn it with some help. I will try these exercises. They must work, because even from just trying to stretch my tongue, it definitely hurts. I must have a very lazy tongue. 😜
Your name is awesome :)
@@flyingrobotpig Thanks! Praise the sun! ☀️

I gave up on spanish years ago because of this. Now its in russian too. Keep at it.
Swedish too, so that you can pronounce viking names.
And Arabic
You should try Dutch
I’m Spanish so it should come to me easily but I am having to much trouble with it and I have practiced for about 2 years
God, I thought I was the only one. I'm also spanish, currently 20, and i've never been able to do it. I'm going to start doing these exercices every day, I hope it gets better for you as well :) Animo ! Seguro que un dia lo conseguimos Saludos desde Alicante !
@@urgay63 I heard it was all about genetics and if you can’t roll your R’s you’ll never be able to do it so I gave up.
@@zetsku2061 Nope, you learn... some easier than others
@@zetsku2061 Nah, it's not genetic at all. Every human has the capability too unless having some mouth abnormality/deformity. I've been trying for 2 years as well and I feel hopeless but it's still somehow possible... Just haven't figured it out yet

The only reason im trying all of this 😂
I did the tongue stretching exercises and I just rolled the perfect r just after I did it, but it literally worked once and now I can't do it again! ☹️ Update: Keep practicing and keep doing the tongue-stretching exercise every day! Keep saying "Prince of Prussia" a few times, keeps adding a letter "D" after the "P's" (so you say "Pdrince Of Pdruussia" - this helps you identify where your tongue needs to be. Everytime you get the chance to practice try and Roll the R instead of just saying "r" in words (like if you're reading something to yourself, whenever there's an R-word use it as a chance to practice), listen to Russian people talk and try to pronounce things like they do (sounds daft but honestly that's helping me so much), learn Russian too (interestingly, I actually roll my R's better when I speak Russian somehow), try and add a silent "D" in words when you're gonna roll yours R's (example, say "D-Russia", the tongue will be in the right place and it helps when you pronounce the R) and above all, keep practicing. Honestly, I can pretty much do it now, but it doesn't quite sound as strong or pronounced as I want it to yet, but the fact I can even trill the R'S with my tongue instead of it coming from my throat like a French R is in itself progress for me, because before I had absolutely no chance! Those are all little tips that are helping me, so thought I'd share incase they help others too. Thank you so much for uploading this! You've helped me immeasurably, and I'm thankful to all Russian people in the videos I've seen of them trilling R's because listening to them has helped me (The Russian way seems to work best for me). 😎
Might be easier to learn Quantum Physics
ON GOD
Can confirm
Amen.
Came for the R's and fell in love with the accent.
Came for the rain and then … came for the Rs ?
It's so cool that you just focus on the Alphabet, Vocabulary and Grammar. You are an amazing instructor. You make learning Russian a fun and exciting adventure.
You're amazing! I've tried so many times before and I was on the verge of accepting defeat but..Today I learned how in exactly 2 minutes!!
At first I thought a tutorial video was a good idea but now I’m laying in bed and I can’t help but feel how pathetic I am that I need to know how to do this for no apparent reason..
you just described my life
Hi, just wanna leave this comment telling you that this method worked for me. Thanh you so much for this, I've struggled so much to pronouce R and now I can do it thank to this video. Thank you so much.
omg thank you so much! I'm from China and it works!!! so happy
Genius! Never been able to roll my Rs in my life, and just 5 mins into your video I've been able to do short phrases... can't wait to see where practicing gets me
I can only do it for like half a second... how to do you maintain it?
I’ve been dealing with this problem since i was a kid, now i’m 23, even that i’m not from english spoken country, and i’ve been bullied a lot that i can’t even pronounce rolling R correctly. Well i might be trying this method then
That single first exercise has helped my rolling so much better. Thanks so much.
Thank you for you honesty in this video. Many videos tell me that I can learn in a day or even five minutes. I was discouraged until watching this. :)
The stretching and then relaxing exercises for the tongue at 3:00 are very helpful (especially the third one for relaxing the tongue). The other techniques did not help me, but might help others. Thanks for posting this!
Every time I think I'm even close I hear you make the actual sound and realize just how far away I am from mastering it
Omg! by within the first few minutes of watching your video I was able to roll my r's, something I've been always fascinated by, but was not at all able to do! Thank you ever so much ☺❤❤
I am starting feeling the tip of my tongue vibrating, for the first time. With the Q-tip. It helps to understand how to pronounce the sound. Thank you.
as a russian thank you so much I couldn't roll my tongue for ages until you came along (I'm 50% russian and my grandmother is from cork)
The way I tell people to do it is to say "better day." Then change that to "vetter day." Say that repeatedly to get the basic feeling of saying green in Spanish, which is verde. I'm not saying this is the only method, but I think it can supplement the other techniques.
And how do i have to put my tongue?
@@samb3l0375 don't worry about your tongue. Just say vetter day about a million times with increasing speed and slight variations; and it should eventually work.
@@ucenic1 OK, because i tried a lot of other things and it never worked🥺

Oh my god I'm only two minutes in and I'm starting to do it. amazing
I learned it when I was a kid-inadvertently. I found I could roll it when imitating a dog's bark. In hindsight, I concluded that it was the fact that I did not focus on my tongue but rather the strong gush of air coming out that I was successful. Many people make the mistake of giving too much thought to the tongue, which creates tension and the false impression that it takes a lot of effort to do it. In fact, it isn't.
Jeffrey Fugh This was really helpful, thanks.

I love all of these tips! I’m going to try them but I wonder if there is any more child friendly ways to explain this to my 3 year old. I’m a Bulgarian married to an English speaker my babe speaks English and is starting to speak Bulgarian too, I’m really bad at the one parent one language thing because I try to model to my husband gentle parenting methods so I end up speaking in English a lot more. So I think because he’s heard so much more English he didn’t get a chance to learn the rolling R from me and I hope that it’s not too late. Thanks for this helpful video 🙏
This is actually a great exercise. Coming from American English and German (which are both harsh languages) this makes complete sense.
