  • Thank you SO MUCH for OVER 30,000 views! This is a new channel so it means a lot to me. I hope some of you will subscribe and stick around for more videos on Italian and English. And also other random stuff once I have enough subscribers who actually care about my life 😁 Anyway, I've been getting a lot of the same questions on this video so I just wanted to direct you to part 2 of this video where I answer a lot of questions. If that doesn't help, feel free to come back and I'd be happy to answer any further questions you have 😊 kzhead.info/sun/l5d-gpioaXWLbH0/bejne.html 💛💛💛

I can kind of do it (from singing lessons; it’s an air exercise) but it feels... exaggerated and not at all... natural, so I kind of chicken out. I try to plan around using it, actually. 😂 “Can I say this another way so I don’t need to use the double R?” I really love the language, so I’m really trying!!! 😅

    • @@hikikomoriarty To my limited knowledge, it was more common in Classical Latin pronunciation, and not as much in the Ecclesiastical Latin commonly used in Churches. There are ancient Latin writings where people described the rolling of Rs in various ways. Not entirely sure as to the precise rules of when you do and don’t roll them, though I know it seems to be more common when it precedes a consonant, like in “hortus”

  • I wanted to leave this comment for anyone who is struggling. I found this video about a year ago when I started learning Portuguese, I know a bit of spanish from my time learning it in school in the US and then as a requirement when I went to college. My Spanish teachers/professors always told me my accent was excellent but I was insecure about it because I could never trill my R's properly. I saw all the comments about how this helped people within hours and got excited but then discouraged when after days of constant practicing I still couldn't do it properly. I practiced on again and off again for this last year, basically trying these exercises until my mouth got tired. A few days ago it finally clicked. Suddenly my R's started rolling on the word vorrei. It wasn't pretty at first and I could only do it on that word, it still didn't work on Spanish on words like perro, burro, erre, etc. but after a few more days of practicing I'm now able to do it on more words and I'm even starting to be able to just make the sound at will. Just keep practicing! It may not happen overnight, in a few days, or even weeks, everyone is different! You're basically teaching your brain to make a new sound which is difficult especially as we get older. I thought it would never work for me but eventually it just clicked! I promise if you keep practicing eventually you'll be able to do it too!

  • Hey, you, who still can't roll your R. Don't give up! I thought I could NEVER do it. Still, I kept practicing it, and after 3 or 4 months trying to pronounce the RR every single day, I've managed to improve and now I can roll my R perfectly. Here is how it might be for you: First, you're gonna keep trying and failing. For days. Then, you'll manage to pronounce "vorrei" or "carro" correctly ONCE. You'll try again and keep failing, for weeks, but now you know you can do it. Then, you'll get it right more and more times, but still not the way you want to. You won't be able to do a long RRRRRRRR, just a short one, like RRR. Keep practicing. Let the air do the job for you. A good way to practice is to keep trying to follow a song's beat with your RR. You'll manage to do a long RRRRRR once and get excited because of it! Keep trying! Some weeks after that, you'll have dominated the rolled R and will get super happy! That's how it went for me. It took time, but it worked. Don't give up from learning a new language because of that: it's simply another challenge for you to overcome. Go for it! I hope my comment has helped you!

  • I'm a native Afrikaans speaker, and our R is officially pronounced as the alveolar trill. However, my brother and I have been mocked and teased for being unable to say it... for virtually all of our lives - even by our parents. I disliked poems that used R prominently, and I couldn't even pronounce my own *name* correctly, having to resort to the alveolar approximant/glide instead. We were supposedly taken for speech therapy when we were younger (I can't remember any of it), but it evidently didn't help. Any other advice we were given was frustratingly vague and ultimately useless. We'd pretty much given up on learning to pronounce the sound. Recently, though, I bought David J. Peterson's "The Art of Language Invention", which got me into exploring all the different sounds that exist cross-linguistically. Just today, I realised I could pronounce literally EVERY sound (edit from future self: *most sounds) in the IPA, _except_ the alveolar trill and its derivatives. It's maddening! I then decided that I would just look it up myself, and though the videos were interesting, they only explained how to pronounce the trill in theory, basically hinting "you'll get it eventually". This video, on the other hand, just... worked. Once I realised I was already pronouncing the alveolar flap, I almost cried. I phoned my BFF halfway through the video and I've been ecstatic since then (this was two-and-a-half hours ago). I cannot wait to help my brother learn how to pronounce it too! I never had an official KZhead account before now, but there cannot be ANY better reason to create one than to like this video and subscribe to your channel. You've literally changed my life. Thank you. Truly.

It's really tough when people make fun of you for your pronunciation. People made fun of me when I couldn't roll the R years ago when I used to use a French R. But it doesn't compare, they were making fun of my third language, but you were made fun of for your first, and you're forced to speak that every day. Thank you so much for this comment. I hope this boosts your confidence, and every once in a while you think of me when you pronounce your beautiful R's 😍♥ I can't believe you made an account just to subscribe to me, I'm so happy! • @@elissa.dellaera It's me again! I celebrated my birthday yesterday, so I thought I'd update you on the R-situation. (I _do_ think of you everyone once in a while when I pronounce my beautiful R's. ♥) Two years ago, I had difficulty doing the trill and could only really manage the tap/flap, but I've been practising since then and can now roll my R until I run out of breath! I hide this fact from my parents, since I _can_ (and do!) use the trill in conversation, but it's still somewhat challenging. Someday, I'll just start using the R perfectly during conversations and stun my parents with how this came "out of nowhere". But until then, my practice continues. :P I'm glad to see you're well! Quarantine's driving everyone mad to some degree, but it's good to see you're coping too. Stay healthy, and once again, thank you for your amazing advice! ^_^

  • I was discouraged from learning Spanish when I was younger because I couldn't trill the double r's and I'd already had to overcome serious speech impediments with pronouncing r in English - for example, my dad says I pronounced squirrel something like squol (my name is Aaron, so imagine how bad not being about to pronounce an r was for me) - though I overcame that pretty quickly with speech therapy at school, I didn't want to go through that again. I started to learn Spanish again almost three months ago, and a friend has been helping me a bit. I've never had any issues with single r's in Spanish, I figured that one out on my own after about 2 minutes, but the trilled r continued to elude me. Now, my friend is Mexican, and he always laughs when I try to say a word with a trilled r. He tried to explain it to me, but his explanations sucked, and then he sent me a couple of videos. One was this video. I spent about an hour practicing this with 'vorrei' yesterday, and while I saw how it may end up working, I didn't feel like I'd made any progress. Today, while doing some Spanish lessons, I came across the word 'carro.' I always say everything out loud to make sure I'm getting as much speech practice as I do reading & writing. I was immediately annoyed at how it felt impossible to pronounce the word correctly. So I spent the next 30 minutes saying 'carro' using your method of separating the syllables. And finally, amidst well over a hundred attempts to say 'carro', I had a single, wonderfully executed pronunciation - where I made a perfectly trilled r, and I could feel the vibration. At that moment, every feeling of discouragement was gone and I spent the next 30 minutes trying to say a bunch of different words with 'rr,' and I can now do it reliably more than half of the time. I cannot sufficiently express the happiness I feel for this and my gratitude for you.

    • @@ellahernandez5776 Well, I followed what she said, and after a solid hour of essentially saying 'cod-doe' I started to feel a bit of vibration on the tip of my tongue, and it started to sound correct sometimes. At first, I could still only say carro with the trill, but as I practiced a couple of other words - with different sounds before and after the trill - like corre, rojo, burro - eventually I was able to say it every time, and now it just feels perfectly natural. I can even make the sound on its own without a word around it most of the time now. Really speak up while you're practicing as if you're talking to someone on the opposite side of a classroom. I couldn't do it at all while whispering until very recently, and it's still difficult for me to do it at a low speaking volume. One other thing that I noticed when I was still having more trouble, was while lying in bed on my back, I was able to roll my r's more often. I tried just tilting my head back, too, and that worked, but it's a bit less comfortable than lying down. I think it makes it easier, but it's kind of difficult for me to explain why. Blame gravity, I suppose. I think the biggest thing is simply to say it the way Elissa does, broken up into two parts, pronouncing each individual r the normal way you would pronounce them in Spanish, and then it'll just start working after a while. You can add me on Discord if you'd like to talk and I can try to explain more, but I'm not sure how much more I can add.

  • Thanks! I'm a Spanish teacher and I always tell my students not to be intimidated if they can't roll their rs because they can do the short r sound by using a soft d in it's place. Then I let them hear me say "cara" with me using an r and then again with me using a soft d. No one can ever hear the difference. But I've never had a good way to help them roll their rs for the longer Spanish rr sound, so I just had them practice going hdddd. I love your technique of just breaking it into two and letting your brain/muscle memory/lazy mouth run the rrs together! I'm going to try this on them soon. Thanks for sharing.

  • Ellissa you're amazing! You've just helped me to get over another one of those things my mum said I'll never be able to do ... This lesson is priceless. All the other videos are useless compared to this. I haven't mastered it but after like 20 years of thinking there is something wrong with me (thanks mum) I can 'tap' the r and almost trill the rr! I think it's really important to be open to a 'new' letter. When it first happens to sound right it felt very strange and not like what I expected at all. So for those who stress: stop stressing and see what your mouth does. I think it almost feels more like an L sound or DL rather than what I know as a R feeling.
