Brilliant. I'm an American of Italian ancestry, and when I was a tiny tot, I could easily roll and flip my Rs. But when, in my 30s, I finally began to study the Italian language formally, I had somehow lost the connection. I will practice these techniques!! Thank you for breaking it down. Un saluto dagli Stati Uniti!
Sometimes, I can roll my Rs perfectly. Sometimes not. The vowel on either side of the R greatly impacts my success. 😀 Grazie per il video. 😉
Don't read the word, only hear it and repeat it. If you read it you use your native phonetics. Forget the written word.
After learning Italian, I totally sympathize with actors trying to do a regional accent on camera. You might practice in front of the mirror for days, but it can all go out the window when push comes to shove.
As a spanish speaker it’s super easy to roll our R’s. The real challenge for us is learning to pronounce the R’s how the French do hahaha
The French don't roll R's, they just have a gag reflex 😂. (Just kidding, French)
As a portuguese speaker I can pronounce both of them.
spanish have the arabic R right ?
@@CarlosHenrique-co1ql same in Puerto Puerto Rico!!
I am a Spanish speaker and I can do many sounds, I speak 5 languages and Thank God I speak Spanish, that helps alooooot.
Normally in Italy I let my fluent-Italian speaking husband do the speaking, but he was off buying tickets and I was grabbing breakfast. I'm 100% sure the woman at the breakfast bar spoke fluent English, but I figured I could handle it in my rudimentary Italian. It all went fine until I asked for something "crema" and I used Canadian pronunciation. She had no idea what I said. I know how to say it in Italian, but I hadn't said it because the R-part felt strange to me. But when I said it properly she understood immediately. I find the rolled-R is intimidating to use, but I like it (and the British R) much more than the North American R, which is making us sound like a bunch of pirates. But I digress. Thanks for another helpful video. My Italian-speaking husband likes them too.
As a Scot, our Rs are weirdly similar, which has made the rolling R a bit easier than expected!
I noticed it similarly in the Czech Republic with the language's even tricker ř. Scots had little trouble with it while everyone else - me included - sounded like a spitting moka.
You are right! I am Italian and I understand better the English spoken by a rather Scottish than that spoken by an English person. The "R" for me and for all the Italians that learned English at the school (I think) is fundamental for understanding.
Bravissima! Grazie per questi video cosi divertenti, ragazzi!!!
Katie is a brilliant Italian speaker but also a superb language teacher. Both are great. Bravi.
Friarielli! Mannaggia quanto è dificile!
So glad I discovered your channel. This conversational style with subtitles seems a very natural way to learn and you are both entertaining to watch. Thanks! 🙏
Bdavi bdavi bdavi bravi bravi BRAVI!
Grazie mille! The tip about separating the word into two parts really helps! As an Australian, we tend to ignore the 'r' sound altogether wherever we can haha, so this has been very helpful
I can pronounce all of these sounds but I watched till the end because these methods are very interesting and totally work! I'll definitely recommend these to people from now on...
Siete fantastici.
Grazie, this helps a lot. I’m British and have been trying to roll my r’s for ages. I’ll give this a go
I'll give it a try. Thanks for posting!
that's the only video that really help me after years, and I'm Brazilian. thank you so much - still practicing, though!
Wow, grazie!
You guys are very enjoyable to watch... thank you for your help. 🙂
I would like a video about tips for spanish speakers, the words and pronunciation are almost the same but the grammar confused me (maybe because i think it is the same unconsciosly). Good video and congratulations from Medellín, Col.
I used to be able to roll my r's without any problem, but now that I'm older, it seems more difficult. I have no problem with the single "r" tap, and the technique of t-de, t-de, t-de, tre, tre, tre--e' brillante! Grazie mille per questa puntato. Mi aiuto tantissimo. Katie, I can only hope that one day my Italian will be as beautiful as yours is!!
Katie quando portarla muove le mani. Ha assorbito completamente la lingua italiana. Complimenti.
Ciao a tutti!
I have just started to learn Italian and as a German the Italian "R" caused me some trouble. Thank you so much for your techniques! I´ll exercise from now on! :D
It would be helpful to go to Munich maybe :) they often roll their German Rs as well !
How can you do it, I can't do the German r, often my tongue doesn't vibrate and I let out an "h" sound. Not to mention words with hard "ch" and "r", I mess them both
@@lorenzopassero8509 Haha, so each has his or her own struggles. Since I learned German from birth I never thought about where my "r" is produced. I guess it´s in the back of my throat. When we say "brrr" to a horse (meaning "stop") the "r" comes rolling naturally ...😅
@@mariannereuter Here in Italy we often wonder how you do when you have sore throats😂 Anyway, I suppose that will require a lot of practice, but still I can't roll the r in Fruhling
Molta buona puntata. Grazie!!
Grazie for me, the constonant and then the r gets me every time. Being Australian and only speaking English my whole life I find it very hard to roll my rs! Practice, practice, practice. Thanks for the tips! Gdazie! :D
Now I just need to practice.
This was very helpful! I think I've been putting my tongue much too far back in my mouth and have been almost trying to purr like a cat. The "tt" comparison made it much easier. I'll keep practicing.
Come mi piace questa coppia! Bravissimo!!!
I can't even roll my R's in Spanish, my native language. :')
I imagine this is a lot like the "th" sound in English. There are many native English speakers that can't pronounce it or who have an accent that doesn't use it (e.g., "You got dat ting?")
Thank youu. The singular r comes quite easy to me but I felt like I could never do the double r. While your technique didn't quite do the trick for me, hearing marrone and how you demonstrated a triple r sound with it made it click for me. Half an hour of practice and weird looks from my cat later, I'm actually getting close to sounding somewhat right? Still very airy but I'll keep practicing. Drinking a lot of water helped me too.
Grazie - o forse devo dire g-drazie!
In turkish we pronounce the r like you too! In turco ache noi pronunciamo la "r" come voi!
Molto utile e divertente . Grrrazie mille
Ma questo video è MOSTRUOSO! Ma è STRABILIANTEEE!!
ha un'aura potentissima
Thank you for the tips. I’m only in my 4th week of learning Italian and the Rs are very difficult (along with “the”) so your videos are most appreciated. Off to practice now.
I’m on my 3rd month and it’s still hard for me
Mia série favorita non posso sperare prossimo episodio
I miei complimenti, siete molto bravi e chiari. Col goccio di leggerezza che non guasta.
I am American and have been trying to roll my R's for almost fifty years. Still cannot do it. Maybe if I hit this vape another few times I can do it. Ciao!
Those who speak american english are more advantaged of those who speak british english. You already have "r" sound. Thats why i preferred learned english from americans movies because is more udible "r" sound, more understandable for me. As italian i find very difficult to understand standard british english.
I've always struggled with the R sound... I will practise with this method...
Thank You for the video! I am happy to be finlandese, so we have no problem with rolling R, because in our language we have it anyway!
Finnish is such a cool language :)
Italian and Finnish are two of the few languages that have long consonants too, and I know they're the only two languages that can have long consonants at the beginning of a word too.
As a greek native speaker, it's super easy to roll my R's. But in some Italian words the R's are so many in a single word haha. It's a true challenge
Glad I'm not the only one! I can roll my R's quite easily off certain consonants and vowels but not all of them, it's like my tongue is too close to the roof of my mouth and can't transition to the r fast enough. For example I find it difficult to say tre without it sounding like 2 syllables instead of one.
ciao, katie ! mi piace il tuo accento americano 😄 sono americano però ho studiato l’italiano all’università
Awesome video. I struggle with this. I’ll try these techniques. One I use a lot to practice in the car is repeating “vorrei restare.” Lots of r’s for me. Ciao!
"The ragged rascal ran around the rugged rocks" in a broad scottish accent works wonders for me.
I have always been able to roll my r’s, BUT for some reason the word parlare or parlo is hard. Something about the prl all together makes it hard to get a good roll ... :) Un video meraviglioso di nuovo, ragazzi! Grazie per la vostra aiuta! Xo
I've been trying to improve my Italian "erre" pronunciation for years now, with no success. I assumed that I am one of those Americans who cannot physiologically do it. However, now I'm going to start practicing these techniques -- MAGARI! Grazie mille per i vostri video!!! Ciaone! (scherzo) Ciao!
If it doesn't work, try substituting "zee"; once you get the hang of that, transitioning to the rr position for the tongue should be relatively easy for a native english speaker.
practice makes perfect :D
Thank you very much. I have been struggling with this. Some words come easier than others. I am very thankful for the help. Katie is American?
British
when she did the the "marrrrone"! haha! too funny!
I was a1 in Spanish and Italian - but I decided to only push on with my Italian as I couldnt trill my r's. I spent 3 weeks practicing the trilled r and it still didnt work and I knew it mattered more in Spanish so I ended up quitting and just doing Italian.
I fell in love with her doing Rrrrrrrrrrrrr hahahahshshs
I’m an English Speaker who learned to Roll Her R’s in Spanish Class at age 11 and everyone in Spanish class was impressed I also speak French as a second language I speak Italian and my fourth language
Am I correct in assuming that the 'r' between two vowels is less pronounced than an 'r' between a vowel and a consonant?
Ciao ragazzi, siete carini. Grazie.
Mille Grazie. Do we need to roll strongly our tongue when R is at the beginning of a word like the double RR?
I grew up in Bavaria and my whole family can prononce these r without any problems because in Bavarian German we speak the same r like in Italian. My friends can do it also. I am the only one who can't. It's sounds weird if I try to do it 🤣 maybe I look for a teacher just for learning this sound...
Okay, so at 1:46 you nailed it girl ! American style. Lol
How long has Katie been learning Italian to be as profecient as she is? Immpressive🙃
I'm starting to think I have a speech impediment that prevents me from rolling my R's
I like the hair cut on Matteo
Riesco a fare "r" singolare più or meno.
Being a Filipino, rolled R's are quite a walk in the park. For me, the French R is way trickier.
My mind is blown
The Spanish language and the Italian language are both spoken in the front of the mouth while English is spoken in the back of the mouth.
Hehe Katie rocks :-)
Italian's R are difficult... French: ....hold my birre!
Grazie!
Oh my! Now that we know that we do a correct Italian "r"and "rr", -not very different from the Spanish one- the question is: are we pronouncing the English one correctly? How must be said "Bring Rome to my heart"?
Ottimo video! Ottimo canale! Secondo me, «parlargli» è davvero difficile da pronunciare.
Katie, mi piace come parli italiano
A little tongue twister for you: "Ho visto un terribile ramarro marrone e mi sono terribilmente terrorizzato" (I saw a terrible brown lizard and I got terribly terrified)
She's English.. No way this video is so useful thank you !!
merrrrraviglioso!
Ciao, ragazzi. 😋
Giusto! Non ho problema con "r."
Katie are you Canadian? 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Are the various Spanish pronunciations of _r_ much different from the Italian pronunciations of _r_ ?
The standard spanish R and RR are like Italian ones. There are dialects that change it by L, or H,... But only in some positions. You must speak these dialects completely if not, if you only choose change the sound of R, you sound weird.
Salve!!! Me piace molto vostro videos. GRAZIE!! Ho dificultá di pronunciare 10, dieci. Kkkkk.
Diexi !!! Non so, si me poi capire.:)
@@heriklamarca7078 si, capisco :) tranquillo, scrivi bene 👍
Forse ti viene meglio se lo pronunci alla Romana, Something like: "d-yeah-she" cioè colla "c" moscia.
I can't do it. The Latin "R" is a nightmare for me. My tongue just cannot vibrate like you guys.
Being Australian doesn't help me either, we don't even pronounce our 'R's' it's an 'ah or a' sound instead 🤦♀️
Same
@@jeannebrett5596 same for us New Yorkers, r doesn’t exist here
Mi eserciterò come Katie :-) Grazie!
im not french but for some reason i keep doing the french R..
