A distanza di quasi un anno, vista la visibilità ottenuta dal commento, voglio aggiungere che è una BATTUTA. Si fa per ridere! Spero che gli italiani, oltre a cercare di dimostrarsi maestri della moderazione, prendano esempio dal nostro grande bagaglio culturale e si dimostrino anche maestri della commedia in grado di capire così tanta sottile ironia. Viva l’Italia e gli italiani, viva il vino e soprattutto viva chi è capace di farsi due risate!
Il consumo di alcol pro capite in Italia è una miseria se confrontato ad altri paesi.
Nicola Dal Corso noi al contrario di altri paesi sappiamo consumare alcol, d’altronde viviamo in un posto che geograficamente offre sia l’uva che il luppolo che il grano e culturalmente parlando siamo educati al consumo. All’estero hanno paura di vendere l’alcol etilico puro, e non lo vendono per ciò, per paura che lo bevano qua nessuno sano di mente lo farebbe. Dire però che noi italiani non ci ubriachiamo o non esageriamo mai è paradossale.
@@WeeGeeP90SECS no, la differenza è che in posti come la Germania è consuetudine bere una birra ogni giorno tutti i giorni e soprattutto è normale che lo facciano tutti. In Italia invece il consumo abituale di alcol praticamente non esiste (e per abituale non intendo ubriacarsi tutti i giorni ma bere un bicchiere tutti i giorni), mentre la maggior parte dei bevitori si ubriaca nel weekend e poi non beve o quasi in settimana.
Nicola Dal Corso mmmh, mi sa che non viviamo nella stessa Italia allora! Sia nel sud che nel nord del nostro paese il vino a tavola non manca mai. Ma ciò è dimostrato dal fatto che l’italia sia una delle maggiori produttrici di vino del mondo (al primo posto con 48,5MLN di ettolitri secondo federvini.it): in regioni come il Piemonte, la Lombardia, il Veneto, la Puglia, la Toscana, la Sicilia abbiamo tra i vitigni più rinomati! In qualsiasi casa di qualsiasi italiano in cui ho mangiato il vino a tavola non mancava mai. Poi posso ammettere che, magari, sono solo quelli che conosco io così! Anche se l’italia è sempre nella top 10 del consumo di vino (sempre prima rispetto a qualsiasi paese anglofono o alla Germania che hai citato, controlla tu stesso su internet). Fatto sta che non voglio farne una discussione da una battuta. Cin cin a distanza e facciamo forza al nostro paese in questo periodo più che mai e ricordiamoci che viviamo in un posto stupendo!

A few things I have observed while traveling to Italy: a) You drink the morning coffee standing. I think it was an upcharge if you sat down, and you would have to wait a while to be served. b) Most touristy places sell pizza priced by the kilo. If you order one slice, you get a tiny square. It came handy though when I was walking around city centers for hours. I would grab a bite here and there, and try several places. c) Wine is big in Italy. While visiting cousins, I would notice that often they had a case of wine bottles right under the dinner table. You finish a bottle, and you reach down for another. d) Don't feel the fruit with bare hands while shopping. You had to use little plastic bags just like we use for picking donuts or buns. e) when taking trains or other public transport, it is perfectly fine to ask for help making a connection. Most Italians seem very social and living in the moment. You just want to avoid the guy who is loudly arguing with his girlfriend on the phone. He is probably doing it over the phone in a public place out of safety reasons.
The reason why many people drink the coffee standing, especially in bars, is because they have to hurry or to go somewhere else. Otherwise, we drink at a table. Pizza: yes, since we have two tipes of pizza, so to speak, the one you can buy at the bakery or "pizza al taglio" shops and the pizza you eat at dinner, so the pizza from pizzeria (restaurant). And the pizza from pizzeria is not big as it can be in the US for example, that's why we usually don't share it with others: every pizza is cooked for one person, the size is prepared for one person. Some pizzeria started to prepare bigger pizzas, to be able to share it, but the size of the pizza was created to be for one person. Wine: we are one of the major Countries in the world for the wine's production, every Region in Italy produces red and white wine, since forever, so for us it's normal to drink it while eating along with water. We don't drink anything else while eating except for water and wine. The exceptions are pizza, hamburgers with fries, barbecue and such, with which we usually can drink beer or Coca-Cola, Fanta and such. Don't touch fruit and vegetables with bare hands: the reason is hygiene. 😊

@@SY-bn3iz Hygienic government-mandated rules, that's the reason why you can not touch anything at a vegetable shop. Unless you are in a supermarket, but then you must wear a disposable plastic glove. The reason is: you do not want that other people's germs be on the fruit you buy and eat (at the same time, to hell with all the pesticides on them... that is no concern...)

I'd liko to add this to the list: asking friends a bit of their food to taste is totally ok, especially if you offer a bit of yours as an "exchange", but is generally considered rude to ask the first or the last bit of the meal.
When learning Italien in Italy I asked the teacher how they "survived" with a breakfast made of only coffe and cake - we eat it twice before lunch she said.

I'm italian. Cappuccino is my favourite type of coffee to get at a cafè since I need milk in my coffee to be able to drink it without stomach ache, I never had problems getting a cappuccino done for me even in the afternoon, tough in the evening to avoid weird looks I'd always go for a caffè macchiato (the latte macchiato of the video, which is called caffè macchiato in the region of italy where I live)

Tanti ani fa, avevo un idraulico, che porte le bombole al'appartimento. Un giorno, la bombola non c'e. Neanche il idaulico. La nostra amica, la barista, mi ha detto, lui beva tropo, e la setimana scorsa diventa gialla, e morto.
In Italy also exists pizza al taglio which means that you can buy pieces of pizza and not only a whole one… in family I ate pizza made by hand and cooked in forno a legna… after that it was cut into small pieces, shared with the family and drinking a good Italian beer… definitely a lovely experience!

But you must also know that these aren't real rules. I'm Italian and I can order a cappuccino with 0 problems. 😊 You can also ask for a different breakfast. We're fan of meat/eggs /tuna too at breakfast. You can also order a little pizza for breakfast. We're very flexible.
One thing I've learned about Italian food manners is always to stay in moderation, and food and drinks are sacred. Applying this in my life from now on.

Dover spiegare agli americani che "latte" significa latte è qualcosa che non dovrebbe ricadere sulle spalle degli italiani. Sono gli americani che hanno appropriato il termine per usarlo impropriamente

il termine "latte" per riferirsi a caffelatte e latte macchiato viene da Lino Meiorin, un emigrato italiano che faceva il barista al Caffe Mediterraneum di Berkley, in California. L'uso da li' si e' esteso al resto degli stati uniti e infine nel resto del mondo. Come le fettuccine alfredo o la pasta con le polpette, molte delle ricette italiane americane che noi consideriamo aberranti sono state create da immigrati italiani. sulla parola 'pepperoni' non ci sono fonti sicure, ma comincia ad apparire dal 1919 nei listini di pizzerie e salumerie italiane in america, che probabilmente significa che il termine e' stato creato anche in questo caso da emigrati italiani

When I was working in a small town in Italy as part of a festival, I had to eat every meal at a restaurant or bar because my accommodations had no place for me to cook or to keep food. It was very awkward and too expensive for me to eat out for every meal. Therefore, I resorted to buying a panino at a little shop and eating it while sitting on the steps. There was a pizza vendor who sold squares of pizza from a cart on the corso. How could we eat it except on the street while walking? There were no options. In situations like this for visitors/tourists, what do you recommend? Grazie mille.
Your bosses were jerks for not providing you with such basic necessities. Anyways, most Italians are cool with eating on the streets as long as you clean up after yourself.
Usually people don’t do that, but you can do it wherever you want, expect in specific touristic spots, where is not allowed for hygienic reasons. But just think to gelato cones, it’s a must to eating them having a walk!

I absolutely love this video! I had heard about the no cappuccino after midday. The waiter that refused to bring the cheese for the fish was hilarious 🤣! The way the customer said “awww” I felt so bad, he was so disappointed.

I was confused by caffè/lungo in Italy. Maybe because I'm a foreigner, sometimes when I ordred a "caffè" I was obviously given a ristretto, but sometimes it looked more like a lungo, so I didn't always know what I was drinking. Also about water in restaurants, I once was asked by the waiter if I needed water (I was drinking wine), and he gave me a glass bottle of tap water.

In general it is true that Italians don't share their pizza al piatto, but this depends on the type of relationship you have with those who are at your table. For example I often go out with 12 to 14 friends and after various appetizers we always order 6 or 7 different pizzas, already cut, so that each of us can eat three or four different pieces. I don't mind it at all, on the contrary, I think I prefer eating different pieces rather than a big pizza with only one taste.

Lina, if you start following the 14 "recommendations" and maybe not sitting at dinner table in Summer at 6-7 PM you are already doing it super good :) Another recommendation from my side is not to be afraid and ask the Italians, try to learn some words and sentences and communicate with them especially if hotels, restaurants, bars owners but also waiters, guides, salumieri, old ladies at the market, they know best how to enjoy life in Italy ;) Another trick is to have Italian friends, but for that (see above) the key is communication. Friends is the next level, a sort of trojan horse ;) If you cannot do that in Italian, English is also fine with younger generations. During aperitivo eavesdrop people and if you have the feeling they may know English start the conversation asking the best places in town to have seafood or the best panoramic points, favourite buildings and so on. If you are platinum blonde and pale you may look from abroad, but if you sit down at dinner on a Friday-Saturday night at 9 PM (at seaside at 10 often in summer) after a long aperitivo celebrating another day that has come to an end, well, you know definitely more your (Italian) business :D Tschüss von einem Italiener in Wien, der Italien sehnt! Sono stato in America per studio e non so perchè ma era come se fossi il Dio del cibo. Quando era ora di mangiare lì fanno come gli pare, non esiste pranzo insieme, solo la cena fanno insieme, i pranzi per lo piû li fanno insieme solo nei giorni festivi o nelle occasioni particolari, ma una cosa che mi stupì fu quanto tenessero a non sbagliare davanti a me, sembravo Bastianich a Masterchef ai loro occhi 😂. Però qualche abitudine gliel’ho lasciata è di questo sono felice: Mai mettere l’olio nell’acqua di cottura della pasta, mai mettere panna o pancetta nella carbonara, no formaggio sul pesce e infine il caffé non deve essere 2 litri, il caffé é un piacere fugace ma che rimane in bocca🇮🇹🌈

to all the foreigners here, mind that these rules are a bit simplified (so that the video doesn't get too tedious i guess). for those who want to dig deeper, here are a few exceptions: -rule 1: you can also say "salve" which is half formal and totally ok with staff in shops. -rule 3: remember that you're gonna be laughed at a litlle but you're gonna be served your cappuccino anyway -rule 4: actually you can have a savory breakfast at the bar(that's how the coffee shop is called, cause it also serves alchol) if you like the tramezzino, that little triangular no crust sandwich all bars have. just keep in mind they ALL have mayo in them and you can't ask for variations because they come from an external bakery most of the times. my dad used to have tomato and tuna tramezzino next to a cappuccino (weird) all the times. -rule 5: many central italy fish dishes have pecorino or mozzarella in them. never parmigiano though. -rule 7: in bars you can totally have a glass of tap water for free especially if you buy something else -rule 9: some foods are considered ok to eat while walking. we have street food too _rule 10: you can totally share pizza if you agree on it before ordering. more often you trade slices though. like: "what about a slice of my diavola (pepperoni) for a slice of your boscaiola(mushroom and sausage)?" -rule 13: ...it depends. region, age, income, subculture. but yeah, statistically speaking, we don't have the issue of alchol abuse
I agree the cappuccino will come anyways. I accidentally asked for it in a bar and he giggled but I explained I was waiting for the bus and didn't want to eat (though I was hungry). He said okay and told me to take a seat. Not because of the cappuccino but because the bus was going to take a long time xD

Always "salve" with strangers anyway. Even when you walk past an italian on an empty alley silently. No a sudden "CIAO!", like I did once and scared an old signore once.
I ordered a coffe (esprsso) and a beer one day, and had the whole bar laughing at me. They really though that was an absurd combination. I had the coffe quickly, in one or two shots, and then relaxed with the beer. Upper and downer - makes perfect sense to me.
I saw this video and i found out that i am not Italian anymore 😂 Even if i grew up in Italy and have both Italian parents i like eating salt breakfast (noodles, chinese dumplings and so on), i drink cappuccino after 2pm, i put ketchup and mayo on pasta and pizza and i like to share pizza while eating it, sometimes i drink cappuccino while eating lunch too 😂😂😂 i also like ananas pizza～ Actually i am not used to stay here in Italy anymore ㅠㅠㅠㅠ staying abroad (i study in Beijing) for long time and coming here back feels like to be a foreigner ㅠㅠ
I'm Italian, almost everything is true. The only thing I don't agree is that we don't drink too much. Actually in some regions in the north (Veneto, for exemple) people are famous for drinking a lot. Ok, maybe comparing with English, Polish, German or Russian we are not at the same level...
è il modo di bere che è differente, all'estero si sfondano di bere per principio ,cioè si esce proprio per questo , il cosidetto Binge drinking . Qui in italia esiste certo ma non è la prassi comune , anche i veneti ( e io lo sono , almeno di famiglia ) bevono tanto ma in maniera "distribuita" , non per sfondarsi in 5 minuti e vomitare l'anima dopo 10.

Ma ora passati i 40 almeno tra le mie conoscenze non conosco nessuno che tutti i venerdì scende al " pub " e si ubriaca con metodo nei , i primi 15 minuti e rimane tra il brillo e losfatto fino a ora di chiusura. Certo abbiamo anche noi gli alcolizzati, ma son proprio due modi/mondi differenti , soprattutto come percezione.
It's not comparable to countries in which people can't wait for Fridays just to get drunk. And this happens not only with teenagers, it is very common among professionals in their 40s and over. Being hangover is considered " cool" and normal and againg, I'm not talking about young people

I can add another one: saying bravo to everyone, men women, groups. Bravo for one male, bravi for multiple males or mixed groups brava for one female and brave for a group of women. One thing that annoys me when I go back to the uk is seeing a sign or menu with the word 'paninis' or when I order the panini and I only get one. Panino means one sandwich so panini is already plural. It is like saying peoples or mens so it is irritating.

Oh yes. As a translator I'm used to see these kind of horrors on an almost daily basis, but in my own code of conduct I don't allow them to occur. I use to compile a long list of extensive pinpoints when returning my work to the client, especially when terms could create quite a confusion among different readers.
@Bb Sz No. Curricula is solely used in plural sentences. Even if I have to admit there might be lots of people ignorant about Latin who use words as they like. Technically, Latin is not a foreign language as it constitutes an early form of Italian, so the rules of "singular-only" don't apply.
@Bb Sz in Vatican the Italian is the official language, only the Constitution and the Holy See use Latin, that is not properly an ancient form of the modern Italian language. Curricula is the correct plural for curriculum, even if many use only the singular this doesn't mean that we don't use the correct form. I would add that usualy we take a cappuccino in the morning but it's not a crime having it in the afternoon, or at night. And I don't know what's a prosecco molto dolce
@Bb Sz So the correct plural of stadium is stadiums not stadia? Makes sense. You can't possibly know and use every rule for every foreign word. Like when people get pissed that you say french or spanish or Japanese words wrong. It would sound silly if you pronounced every foreign word perfectly when speaking English.
I'm sure others will have pointed out in earlier comments, but even though it is indeed unusual to have a cappuccino after midday, some people do, and no waiter will refuse to serve it if you order it (unless they have already cleaned the machine or something else that would make it a hassle)
Nice video! But there are some stuff to correct.. It probably depends on where you go, but I'm Italian and I can say that thousands of Italians eat a salt breakfast, not sweet. Also it's ok to order a cappuccino during afternoon. I do it sometimes. You can also ask a glass of weather because a lot of bar/restaurants have some open bottles to use for this kind of requests. In fact, when they give a coffee to you, they'll also offer a little glass of water too to refresh your mouth after the coffee. 😊 I can also say that they're joking about sharing pizza. We do it for friends. But yeah.. It hurts anyway 😂 Fish with cheese is a bit weird, but you can easily find pizza with mozzarella and seafood on it. Btw.. Ketchup on pizza is a gigantic NOPE!! Also it's true, we tend to drink but in a very moderate way. :3
Technically ketchup is more accurate to the original use by the Aztecs. It was a condiment that they’d dip stuff into, then some Italian came over and was like “mine now”. Now Italians literally pee their pants in anger anytime you eat anything tomato based the “incorrect way”.
