DIY Sandblasting Cabinet

I needed a way to contain the mess created when sandblasting but don't have the room for a full size sandblasting cabinet so I made my own. I wanted to etch some glass and this cabinet makes it really easy.

  • People asked about parts. I want to build this cabinet to clean small metal model trains, researched what he used, and found these: BOX Sterilite (P.N. 1933) Gasket 32 qt Storage box, available at some Home Depots, $10.37. FLANGE 4" dia toilet flange, about $4 each Home Depot, if that does not fit my arms I will cut plywood disks. GLOVES I would use heavy rubberized gloves to hold the work, like rubber-dipped fabric, and use the long gloves as air seals. Amazon or Walmart, kitchen rubber cleaning gloves, various brands, with fabric sleeves $8.99 Alternate gloves, I got these for brewing beer and keeping the beer clean - Harbor Freight elbow length PVC gloves, $6.99

  • Nice build. Finally someone who is not just trying to recreate a commercial design, but something most people should have no problems making. Also happens to be how I am making one, but I went cheap on the plastic box and I've gotta find a better one like you used. 2 Side notes; Hose clamps around the gloves for better security and maybe pick up both ends for the air quick connect and use them to put the air in but a lot easier to seal up that hole. Make a short flexible hose for the gun in the cabinet and you'd be set.

  • Awesome idea. Thank you for the great share. I am looking forward to making one of these. I think I'll use hose clamps instead of the blue painters tape. Good idea to add an additional gardening glove to the hand holding the part being blasted.

    @lasersbee@lasersbee5 жыл бұрын
    • Actually just the rubber glove would be plenty of protection, he probably just didn't know that and used the leather glove to be cautious. The media will hardly affect the rubber as evidenced by the fact that he is using tape to protect the glass from the media. I did a lot of sandblast etching of glass in HS and simple cheap masking tape is enough to block the media. Cool setup, the simplicity of it is pure genius.

Cabinet comes with abrasive gun and ceramic nozzles, a hose and 14 in. long rubber gloves. All for less than $100 - Spend extra few bucks and get a real sandblasting cabinet. Don't see the point of going shopping for a plastic storage container, toilet flanges, bolts, filter, etc, etc plus the extra work of drilling holes in it and putting everything together.

  • Anyone thinking about throwing this together I would advise against the 3-4in toilet flange used for the gloves because they're a bit too tight of a fit to squeeze your hand through. For about the same price you can buy dust collector flanges with a larger inner diameter. You can also use a dust collector flange to secure a shop vac filter to in place of the filter used if you want a better seal but its a bit overkill for a container so small. I would think something like a Crankcase breather filter or a cheap motorcycle pod filter would be adequate for something like this. a.co/glybef3 Or if you want to spend a bit more with all the hardware you'd be better off with this a.co/dd3f1vw
