Will micro glass beads work with this? From what I understand there are several size grades.
@@tikkidaddy Whatever you use for media must generally be harder than that which you wish to etch for the effect to occur. In the examples shown, glass beads would work on wood but most likely wouldn't do much to a drinking glass due to both materials being close to the same hardness. Yes, the material itself does influence whether or not it will "cut" or otherwise erode another material but the hardness of the material is the main factor. At the end of the day, if in doubt? Test it out! Best wishes! - Max Giganteum
Nate: what level of difficulty would you say this project is? Calli: I mean, if you have an air compressor, not at all
Thanks for the inspiration guys! I made a set of custom engraved glasses for my mother this year for christmas. While testing with a jar i found you get better results with electrical tape instead of duct tape. This is my advice for anyone wanting to try sandblasting. Again thanks for the idea.
This does work extremely well, but I wonder how long that tube will last before the inner walls sand away.
use an intensely thick tubing
you can always replace it when it goes bad, also shouldnt cost much too!
I think this is for occasionally users. If you sand blast ALOT, you should buy the REAL stuff.
That sounds like a question for Jake Paul
The sand is travelling parallel to the walls of the tube. When the sand hits a surface perpendicular to its velocity, all of the sand's energy is being put into the object and it chips away small pieces, but when the sand lightly skims across a surface parallel to its velocity, barely any energy is put into it, and the surface won't be chipped away, so I think the inner walls of the air gun will be fine for quite a long time.

@@ghoulinthegraveyard399 maybe you could blow someone once for 100 bucks. Then get your $60 air compressor (price check) and have $40 bucks to get yourself something nice

Says 5$ Says needs a 100$ air compressor
1005 bux now
That compressor he has is a lot more than $100. You can't even get a small one for $100. I don't think Harbour Freight even has one that cheap.
100$ 20psi air compressor?
DerpJerd most people have air compressors anyway, or at least people that do stuff like this
DerpJerd air compressors are more than 100... especially his more around 300 to 500
For how simple it is, I appreciate it. I don't use this for decorative purposes, I use it to prepare metal for welding on SMAW or MIG outfits. But I did cave and use some to help etch into surface-brazed metal, and it does work quite well. Industrial quartz sand is what I use for this, and what most sandblasting equipment uses when involved in metal prep for welding.

We get to see a rare, extensive look at the wild KZheadr in it's natural habitat. As you can see, it notices the camera, and basically coexists alongside it, but doesn't really care who is documenting them... which is strange, because they also notice people have "budgets" and care that they want to spend less doing neat creative stuff, barring the fact they're lying to our faces without ever being near them. Nature is a wonderful place! too bad this is the internet
Can get a 12v mini compressor for like £8 on eBay if you wanted, probably slower and might need the tank but eh close enough to budget xD

You don't want to breath in that sand and contract pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
Or you could just say silicosis, which is close enough
well getting that type of silicosis would come from accidentally inhaling the materials expelled from a volcanic eruption
You don't get that by inhaling sand though.

To all of you that are saying "but you still need an air compressor". Air compressors are a fairly common "must have" for a do-it-yourselfer. If you dont have one, get one. You're missing out on a ton of awesome projects, and at very least, it's one of a few basics you'll need to be able to make nice diy stuff. Besides, if you buy an air tool, you still need an air compressor. Pretty standard practice...
How to make a 5$ sand blaster: step one, get a few hundred dollars air compressor
Yeah. That was my first reaction. Where do I get a $5 air compressor?
Look dude, this video is for those who actually own an air compressor, if you don’t have one, don’t worry about it. My only question is who doesn’t have an air compressor? How tf do you fill your car tires?
@@truejoyproducts5097 blowing really hard through a funnel with a straw
Go pick up a cheap smaller compressor at Lowe’s. Or harbor freight. Or really anywhere that sells tools. You don’t need a huge one like they had. I have a compressor at home, it needs fixed but we have one. We also have a small one meant for tires that doesn’t have a tank. But that won’t work for this application.
Then additional 10$ of protection you are almost guaranteed not to have.

I have a compressor. I just looked all of this up and in my area this will all cost around $25-30 with sand. Whereas the cheapest gun I was able to find was a cheap quality one online for around $30 without sand. This build seems more reliable than that one and so I think I might try it. Thank you

TKOR do you think you could use this on a small scale for cleaning up metal parts from corrosion?
Yes it will work that way but ofcourse less efficiënt than a "real" sandblaster and you have to use the right kind of sand there are many different types you can use
MrKris286 use a metal wire brush on an angle grinder but wear eye pro because metal wires can fly off at high speeds and getting hit can hurt a little
You can also use baking soda (or blasting soda) on aluminum parts that you want to keep looking nice. Quartz and aluminum oxide media abrade the surface of aluminum pretty severely.
Just tried this today, it was awesome! (Ours was closer to $10, because we don't have a Harbor Freight near by) Wish I could post a picture of all my newly personalized bake ware.

Seriously, everyone needs an air compressor. Its like number 4 on the list of tools all adults need. It goes multi-head screw driver, Cordless drill, ratchet set and then air compressor. It doesn't need to be a huge one like they had in the video. Get a cheap pancake one that can drive some nails, fill up some tires and blast air(and sand) where you need it

Air dusters are way too weak.

Although you could always turn the air duster upside down and blast your glassware. That should give some exciting results as well.
@@JasonBlooey - if buying an air compressor would keep you from going to college, then you weren't going to college anyway.
This video is like EA games, it takes you maybe 5 or 10 dollars to make it, then you spend the next 300 dollars getting an Air Compressor, file, sand, drill, drill bit, wood, shower rubber, etc.
If you are going about diy that isn’t on Instagram or Facebook where hot glue and popsicle sticks are the life blood of their ideas, you will most likely need at least some tools. I mean you could do this with a canned air duster , a lighter and a nail to poke through the bottle , as well as hot glue for stability. However it will be not nearly as sturdy as the video example.
Let’s not forget about how Skate 3 was amazing
If you already have the things what is there to be complaining about? It takes just a few minutes to set up and it works really great. I made one and it lasts forever. I’ve never had any issues with it.

Any living being should have a drill, drill bits, scrap wood laying around, files. Then a lot of people that watch these have things like air compressors.
