On The Brink Of Losing 800-Year-Old Family Mansion | Country House Rescue | Abode

Fulford Manor is a gorgeous grade one listed house in Exeter. The house has been in the Fulford family for 800 years. Francis is the 28th generation to inherit the home where he lives with his wife, Kishanda and 3 sons. However, the couple have officially run out of money. The house only makes them $11,500 a year, which is spent paying back the debts they owe. As a result, there hasn’t been any money for renovations and the couple are struggling. Francis wants his eldest to inherit the home in a better state than he did; but at this rate, they’ll lose it first. Businessman, Simon Davis is on the case to try and help the couple keep their doors open. But will they take his help?

    • Yes, I don't know how he kept himself from uttering a few choice words and storming out himself when confronted for the umpteenth time with her negativity and rudeness, and his cloud cuckoo-land 'hooray-Henry'-style idiocy. They both seemed lost in their own bubbles of some sort of class-based entitlement, in which they'd lost touch completely with current realities. They desperately needed a fresh pair of eyes but they couldn't see or didn't want to know that what they proposed to offer- a casual, family/friendly style of hospitality in a semi-derelict, once beautiful country pile - was not marketable for the price they wanted to charge. They could at least have listened respectfully to Simon's expertise on room/ hospitality prices, and offered their own alternative ideas for potentially profitable events if they didn't feel any enthusiasm for the one he suggested. But in the end, even the 'jazz club' turned out to be nothing but a one-off private party for friends. Possibly the idea of doing anything that smacked of business or commerce, involving having to mingle with, and horror-of-horrors, even serve the (potentially non-posh) general public, actually just revolted them - thus the curiously defensive attitude.. As with a lot of entitled people born into privilege, they wanted to have their lovely place to live and money to roll in from somewhere, but in the end weren't prepared to put themselves out, in the slightest, to earn any of it.

The house is pretty much secure with a non-leaking roof, they seem to be able to service their debts with the revenue from their farms so they are just happy drifting along in their house with the odd wedding making them some spending money. Maybe the next generation will have some more drive to realise the houses full potential, that's the way these artistocratic/gentry families work, they get 1 good heir who is finacially responsible then 1 bad heir who squanders the money, and so on.

  • Dear me, what a pair, Francis reminds me of the Harry Enfield character "Mr Nice but Dim" He seems totally gormless, and even after seeing the other wedding venue, with its fabulous decor and furniture, he still thought him charging more for his dirty dilapidated, mould ridden ruin was justifiable. As for Kishandra, I reckon she was raised in a council housing estate somewhere, never taught etiquette or manners, she probably thought marrying Mr Nice but Dim would lead to a life of luxury, now she is stuck in that crumbling ruin, cold, dirty and a health hazard with all that mould.

    @truthseeker444@truthseeker444 Жыл бұрын
    • You are quite quick to jump to conclusions. Not that quick witted yourself if you base your understanding of a person you never met on a scripted television show. Haha, this world is really something isn't it? I can attest to Francis Fulford not being even close to "dim". On the contrary - quite clever. He's laid back, not a go-getter business minded sort of person. It's not in his nature. A lot of these estates are built with a big cash flow in mind. After the modernization of the western world at the turn of the last century (ca. 1900) these families have had to pay for the upkeep with little to no cash flow. Inheritance- and tax laws have done a great deal of damage as well. Although these laws are on their way of being modernized. Slowly, all too slowly, but still on it's way.

  • There used to be a reality TV show featuring this family, apparently when Kishanda was 39 and kids were still in the house. Now there is a website which shows three restored grand rooms and the eight bedrooms for weddings and other events. Drone footage shows the wallpaper is still peeling in the grand staircase, but the place does look pretty impressive, none the less. The website mentions electric blankets provided for the bedrooms, so still not heat? It does look like they're making a go of it, though. I saw an obituary for a Kishanda Fulford from 2021.

I'd be worried in the US, In an old stately manner with old wiring, the house may catch fire due to overloading the circuits with all those heaters. Also, from the git go, from the very beginning I suspected this rescue would fail due to apathetic, entitled owners. Soon, they will be selling off land to pay the bills. But, their reluctance to start making some effort that will bankroll the house, I think they have more in the coffers than the owner let on. He's likable enough, but both of them are an ungrateful waste of energy to anyone who attempts to help them in any way. They are really a strange lot as the Brits would say! 😁😎👍✌☃🎄
