Maya is a gorgeous 7 year old German Shepherd. She is very well behaved for grooming, but she thinks the brush should be executed.
Maya does not receive cologne as requested by her owners.

  • We had a golden retriever who absolutely LOVED to be brushed. He would carry the brush around by the handle and drop it in your lap when he wanted to be brushed. When you were done, you would hand the brush back to him, and he would carry it to the next person.

  • We used to have a long haired GS when I grew up and he LOVED being brushed. Whenever we'd watch TV at night, you could just take out the brush and wriggle it at him and he'd flop down right in front of you and let you brush him.

  • I remember my only German Shepherd ive ever had,my parents got him shortly after i was born. He saved my life when i was being attacked by another dog, when i was 4 years old. I never got another one because i felt like i was replacing him. I hope i see him at rainbow bridge along with my other doggies.

    • You will, animals are innocent sentinel beings. You're not replacing your former dog, you're saving another one from death. Go look at your local shelters, and keep looking until you find what you want 💖💖

      @mamacat63@mamacat632 жыл бұрын
    • I’d say have a look in your local shelters (ideally the high kill shelters so you save a life and provide an extra slot for a dog within said shelter) as you can find so many loving dogs. You are in no way replacing your dog and he will always sit snugly in your heart, but maybe another furry friend is waiting for you to take them home :)

  • I love the way she approaches Maya’s hatred of brushing. She’s something of a bite risk and a German shepherd bite could do real damage. But the groomer understands that Maya isn’t actually aggressive or trying to hurt her. She just hates the brush. So we’ll put Maya in a muzzle for a few minutes and it’ll be fine.

    @Mgfaulkner793@Mgfaulkner7933 жыл бұрын
    • I have fostered and adopted dogs labeled aggressive throughout my life. Maya isn't aggressive. That behavior is called reactive. She is reacting to something unpleasant/painful to her. The reaction isn't completely appropriate so the muzzle is a fine way of handling it, since the experience is so infrequent. Note that a few minutes later she was absolutely fine being handled in the same way just with a different tool with no muzzle. I do want to praise the groomer. I've seen groomers who put dogs into muzzles immediately without even asking if they're reactive.

    • Hey, another Mallory!! Hello there!

      @malloryg4251@malloryg42512 жыл бұрын
    • Yes! And on top of all that, she did everything she could to reduce brushing time by getting extra coat out in the wash, dry and shave stages (probably makes things go faster for the groomer too, so it's a win-win).

      @Hermititis@Hermititis2 жыл бұрын
    • I wonder if her fear of brushes is due to someone trying to get her matts out with a brush?

      @MeriLizzie@MeriLizzie2 жыл бұрын
    • @@MeriLizzie possibly. As the groomer mentions during the video, the dog doesn’t tolerate any type of pulling on her fur. Some double coated breeds gets very easily matted and/or tangled and it’s kind of like brushing your hair with a lot of tangles in it. But you decide how hard you pull on your hair the dog doesn’t decide that.

  • I can't believe that in 42 years of grooming, I never thought to use a mosquito net to keep the flying undercoat out of my face. Thank you for showing that! 🙏 That was a beautiful grooming, and Maya was (mostly 😊 a very good girl.

  • The best dog I ever had... was the runt of the litter and his owner was going to... shall we say... expedite his departure. He gave the dog to me... for free... I won't lie. Major had all sorts of issues. skin issues. dietary issues. I mean wow. I switched food types because he was alergic to just about everything. It got to the point where I was cooking him steak and rice... twice a day in addition to whatever food the family was having. we tried medications. Nothing worked. But Major saved my brothers life... From falling into a frozen pond.... and later he saved my life... from depression. He was family and to me, he was the greatest dog I'd have the privilege of knowing. Major Spence - 2006 to 2016. RIP

Possibly not the groomer your right or the groom place but they and their owner will be a lot happier and relieved from stress after the groomer because of matting, overheating, flee's, loose fur getting caught up, etc.

      @MichaelBrown-rg8oi@MichaelBrown-rg8oi3 жыл бұрын
    • @@MichaelBrown-rg8oi how do you know that? How can you know that a dog loves the feeling of being brushed/clean? Because kids like it? Why don’t wolves wash themselves then? Well, because they need to hide their own odour to facilitate hunt. That’s what dogs do when they roll around in something really stinky. I don’t want to engage in an online argument and if I come across like that, I’m sorry. I’m just baffled by the fact that everyone celebrates a video of a dog suffering. We often anthropomorph dogs, because we live so close to them. We forget their nature and put them through needless pain like this, because WE would like it. Flees and ticks are dealt with preemptively and overheating is regulated by nature to a certain degree. There sure are situations where a treatment like this is required, but then the dog looks very different beforehand. When my huskies shed, I brush them. Not for their sake, but for mine. It’s unnatural and they don’t like it, even if I keep them occupied with treats. My rule is to let dogs be dogs as much as I can.

  • Our two GSD adore their brushing. I think they see it as part of a social bonding practice with their humans. We'll ask, "Who wants brushies?" and they both will come running! Two things with GSD - hair and exercise.

    • Just know that SOME of them need training, if from a breeder who wasn't focused on even temperament. My dad's girlfriend had a GSD in the past and didn't have to train him, but when that dog died, she expected a new puppy would be in the same boat. Nope, not in the least bit. The new puppy was, well, a puppy, and to this day, GF is constantly shouting at the dog to stop barking, and she once called my dad, crying that the dog put her front paws on the counter and smashed a birthday cake that had just been hand-made for GF's granddaughter. Do your research, expect the worst, and hope for the best.

My parents grew up with that being ok so they didnt see anything wrong in letting our dog live like that. Although he was actually enjoying it and we did interact a lot with him he never was allowed in the house and so on. After cancer took him I swore up and down if they get a new dog they wont dare to put this one through the same treatment or else I'll bring the dog to a shelter at night. Well. Apparently it does the trick.

    • Actually it sounds worse than it is. Excuse me if I’m interpreting things wrong but some dogs are used as property protectors or livestock guardians, this means they never come inside and they are never treated like our normal everyday dog because they are meant to protect, they don’t get as much attention so they don’t crave it and not pay attention to their job. German shepherds and Great Pyrenees for example have thick coats which keep them warm in the winter and cold in the summer. I hope this helped just a little bit to help you understand why 😊
