you: it's ok. dog: i don't think so. me: thx for a really compassionate grooming. he will feel so much better.
Arthritis is a huge factor and understandable Dogs going to love it. ❤
Vanessa, I think your furcut looked wonderful in the end. Cabot was such a sweet, handsome boi. I loved his beautiful coloring. Thank you for this very educational video. ❤
Hello ! I’m new to the channel so if you’re already know what I’m going to tell you I’m sorry ! About all the leftover fur, are you throwing it away? Because if you could let some of it near trees and bushes it would make a great material for bird nesting !! They love to make their nests with soft and fluffy fur ^^ I hope you see this comment
@@skitonper only fur of short haired dogs - the nestlings can die in fur of afghanes or other long haired dogs. but all fur can make a great improvement of the soil. when it rots there are some proteines for some high value microorganisms in the soil. 🙂
As someone who owns a senior, arthritic Newfie, their comfort is more important than their coat. I keep my girl clipped to an inch length now and it is very apparent how much better she and her joints feels with a shorter coat.
I agree that making sure they are healthy and comfortable is #1 to a long life spand.
Thank you for loving her the way she deserves. This breed is so special! ❤
I had a neighbor with 3 Newfies who would come running down their hilly backyard to their fence warning bystanders with their deep, commanding barks. It was rather intimidating actually. I wonder what their senior years were like? Thank you for loving your senior Newfie. ❤
That kind of makes sense! When you have that much fur I never thought it would add weight to them
I wonder if, for some reason, it feels better on her Arthritis or her body to keep her head down just curious. Also questioned it.I often wonder how hot or cold or warm.Your blow dryer is.I'm hoping it's not cold LO.L 😮
11 years is positively ancient for such a huge dog. It really speaks for his owners.
That’s what I thought too! Good breeding and really good pet parents!
Well some giant breeds the like the Alabai/CAS dog can live to 15 or a little longer.
It is, although my 130-pound Alaskan Malamute lived 16 years!
It could be genes. We had a lab that lived to be 15.
Had a husky that lived to be at least 20, maybe 23, his previous owners were a bit sketchy on his age. Vet was pretty sure she recognized him though, so owners told us 5 years old, vet said 8. My mom agreed to let me adopt him even though she was allergic to him figuring okay a couple of years, dog will be passing before i became an adult and lett the house.... nope we had him another 15 years, old old man even if he had been a puppy
He looks like Eeyore during his blowdry! What a sweet old gentleman. Thank you, Vanessa and his pet parents, for putting his comfort first.
Yes 👏 👏 was trying to think who he reminded me of. 🫏
Fabulously forlorn floof!
I was thinking the same thing!!!
Mind-reader! 😂
I was definitely thinking the same, with his size and keeping his head down!
Win-Win. The dog is much more comfortable, and the groomer has enough fur to make her own Newfie.
11 is old for a large dog. A double coat is beautiful, but hes now at a point in his life where its to much for him. Glad to see hes got owners who put his comfort first. Thank you for doing this for this old boy....
When a dog gets old, I stop caring about their double coat. Shaving can bring them so much happiness more comfort, and will extend the time between grooms, which decreases stress. He feels better at the end, and that’s all that matters. ❤
I still can't get over the fact that Vanessa always has such pretty nails given the fact they're constantly being exposed to water, soap, and scratching dogs. Props to her nail tech!!
I know, right? I want to know her secrets
I thought the same.
i was just thinking that! they’re always super snazzy!!
@@ladywithasword4587probably gel manicure they last longer
@@venusvalera8692 I'd say acrylic, I'd get mine done every 4-6 weeks.
It looks like you're shaving a bison. Thanks for taking good care of this old man.
Our older Golden had a neurological condition that led to him struggling to breathe a lot of the time - and he really struggled with heat. Shaving him down made a huge difference in his comfort. It was sad to lose his beautiful coat - but it made a huge difference for him.
Saved dogs have more heath because the coat protect them
@@CyC-si2znI’m sure you mean shaved?
You are a responsible and loving dog owner. ❤
@@CyC-si2zn Except, OP's dog's situation is different as he had a neurological condition which makes it difficult for him to breathe. I don't know the specifics of the dog's situation but it's worth bearing in mind that one way dogs regulate temperature is by panting, so if you have a condition which makes it difficult for you to do that, having a heavy coat of fur on you will make it even harder.
i too had a golden that had problems with the heart - but i did not shave him, i bought scissors for dogs and i worked like a week on him and about an hour every day to shorten his fur and in the end he looked like a labrador ;) and he felt soooo much better.
I appreciate the education you give us while grooming your clients. You are very compassionate with the animals
Very educational. I learn something new with each video. Vanessa is a wonderful ambassador for her breed. 😉
Is she compassionate toward the dog? I see being kind of “cold” toward the dog.
@@kurtrindgen4708No 😊 She has a quirky sense of humour which is unique on animal channels. Just because she doesn't drip with sentimentality doesn't for a moment mean she doesn't have a deep, hands-on love for animals. Her work with and for animals AND people shows this unequivocally. If I may suggest, listen to this again and re-look at being "cold". The care of this dog and her explanations and consideration of this oldie's needs are the opposite of "cold".
Vanessa is a straight up advocate for the rights and dignity of disabled dogs and I am here for it
We had a half Newfie, half Saint Bernard for 13 years. She was, bar none, the sweetest, most gentle souled dog I have ever known. Loved her so much!
Oh I bet she was. ❤. We had a Great Saint. Great Pyrenees mix. He was also the best. Will miss him forever. ❤
What were their names?
@@malloryemclaren mine was Sasha
Him keeping his head down like that reminds me of Eeyore 🥺 He is so beautiful, and it is so much more important to keep him comfortable than maintain his double coat
THAT is who I was trying to call up from the dim chambers of my memory. xD Thank you. Yes, he's incredibly gorgeous and such an old boy. His poor chest was going like a pair of bellows. :(
I was wondering if someone else would have thought the same thing. He was definitely giving Eyeore vibes. ❤
I think the giant breeds are magnificent! I don’t have a favorite I love them all. I usually get in trouble with the owners because I don’t immediately think about it working. That the Lord created them is proof of his love 💕 Their calmness is beautiful. I was always with small breeds from Scotland, Westie’s and Cairns, Scotties, very excitable breeds maybe that’s why they fascinate me.
Can't imagine the relief the old boy must feel with the weight of all that fur off. Especially, with the summer months coming up.
That must be 10 pounds at least
@@hydewhyte4364 Oh yeah, at least. That would make a huge difference for a large senior dog.
For a second he looked like that bear at the zoo that lost all its hair, but you fixed him up so good! I’m sure he feels much lighter and hopefully more comfortable
I am so glad that he is getting shaved. Senior fluffy dogs feel so much better, and it's for their comfort and care. Most seniors aren't extremely active and I am so glad there are ppl out there that genuinely care about their welfare like you.❤
Couldn't agree more!! ❤
We have a 17 year old pom mix. He may be arthritis, be blind, deaf, and only have a few teeth. His entire life he has hated a comb and brush. He has a double coat. But due to how his entire life he wanted to eat me alive. We found a compassionate groomer whom he trust. And she finally said a hair trim was the best. And it has been a godsend. When a groomer has the compassion for the pet. It makes.all the difference. Thank you for caring for this senior gentleman.
I just lost my 18-year-old pom mix last October and he was always a perfect little angel with the groomer but whenever I trimmed his nails and his tiny paws he would snap and snarl like he wanted to eat all my fingers and both hands if I touched His Majesty's precious paws. You would never know this was Mommy's little shadow who never let me out of his sight from the day I brought him home. Your story reminded of that. He too was blind and deaf at the end and after a major dental was toothless but that didn't stop him protesting a nail trim or keeping his paws cleaned up for his safety. Even blind, if he woke up and found I had left the room, he would bark up a storm, ordering me back to pick him up. Sounds like your baby and mine were a lot alike. Best wishes and please give him a hug for me, (but don't touch his paws). 🤗
I have a tiny 15yo Maltese and she's at her bed almost all day. Last time I saw her at my mom's house, I had to shave her, because it was all matted, and my sister (who's her human) didn't realize she had dermatitis spots. I think it was the best decision for her quality of life
Aww he looks so sad in the shower, I want to hug him 🥺💖
Right?! He made my heart ache for some reason. Old stinker was so adorable.❤
I know, right? 🥺 His posture (the way he always holds his head down) may just be because it's more comfortable for him. But it makes him look like he's sad! He's very handsome. ❤ Vanessa did such a good job. 🙂
I'm wondering if the weight of his enormous, adorable noggin, is just too much strain on his old neck muscles and they can't easily support him looking up anymore. 😥
@Fenthule I think you may be right. Poor precious older gentleman! Well, as long as he still has quality of life (he's eating, drinking, and still can get joy out of things), then I say let him keep on going.
Giving Eeyore vibes
Poor old dude. I just want to give him a big hug.
Poor old guy, he's so well behaved! He deserves a nice soft bed and a nap!
That dog is looking on like, "If I had the strength to resist, I'm sure I would. But at this point...I just can't be bothered..."
11 years is a great age for these dogs to reach. I don't think any of my family members' Newfs have ever made it that long. They're a member of the Heartbreak Breeds for very good reasons. 😢 Anything that will help Cabot at this point is a bonus!
I agree, when age is a factor what ever it takes short putting them down. I don't like finding them dead in the morning but I don't put them down until recommended by the veterinarian.
That's a good name for special breeds that have a tendency to pass away before say, mutts do.
Older, heavy, lots of wrinkles & Very Arthritic. I can so relate to Cabot. Thank you for being so considerate of him. 11 is ancient for a dog that big.
I miss my newfie. The best friend I've ever had.
So sad loosing his beautiful coat but totally understandable for this senior dog’s quality of life. ❤. Thank you Vanessa for working with this beautiful soul.
No don't understand it there is nothing to understand here.Undercoat should've never been removed!PERIOD!
Especially since he has already been shaved in the past so his coat has already bern damaged, and the dog is more comfortable.
@@steimbergkarla-elena1983 in this instance it should. they can't maintain his coat at home because of his arthritis so for his health shaving is the most optimal solution. it's like you didn't listen to a word Vanessa said in the video.
His owners have done a great job to get a Newfie to 11 years. Congratulations!
He’s old, he’s in pain, he can’t physically handle a proper groom it would be cruel to try and force him to stand for hours the alternative is letting him get matted
Not only in shaving him down you are saving him the pain and hassle from having regular grooming, but as someone who used to have long hair and after it being cut off and the lack of weight made it feel like my head was going to float off my shoulders, so, not having to lug around the weight of all that fur, must also be of some relief to his poor joints too.
Seconded
Yup, definitely can relate.
I actually wonder if he has some neck/ cervical pain as that is the rare time I have seen a dog keep their head down like that and it could also cause should pain so he really wouldn't want his front paws touched...Newfies are just so stoic about EVERYTHING, I've never seen one complain either much less show teeth. It just really made me think he's in even more pain than the owners already think. I hope I'm wrong I hate for any animal to be in pain, especially since their in so much mire than they show and because they obviously care for him a lot- just keeping a Newfy healthy for 11yrs is so impressive! but he looked handsome and you did the best for him, just as you did the best for the Malamute and every other dog and cat you've groom or haven't. You've done what's in the best interest of the animal to your ability and that's why I love watching.
I really do hope he's getting good pain management from a vet.
I'm sure he wasn't real comfortable after travelling & then having to negotiate himself through moving throughout the groom. But temporary stress during this event pays off when he's much more comfortable afterwards. Pain management providers are ridiculous when it comes to really helping out those who have intractable pain. I'll bet this big guy had a great nap & was tended to pain wise according to what he needed by his people. ❤
This Newfie seems sad to me. I hope his arthritis doesn’t interfere with his daily life and joy for life. We had a dog when I was a kid and her arthritis got so bad she could no longer get up and move. We had to put her down. So grateful for all the new treatments available to our fur babies today.
Newfies are such kind, sweet dogs. They are wonderful. What a dear boy.
He's such a sweet old man. I love they're making him comfortable for his senior years.
What a good boy he was for his groom. I’d love to hug that big boy
Aww Cabbot looked like Eyeore there for a moment. Knowing he’s not exactly comfortable he still looks great!
Cabbot is a sweet, handsome boy. Poor fur baby, arthritis is no fun for anyone. I hope he is happy and comfortable with the time he has left in this life. He really is a sweet boy.
We had a newfoundland who died at 10 years. Had arthritis. Such a sweet gentle giant.
I have never seen a Newfoundland older then 10. They were brothers, well taken care of and really old.
He looks like an adorable friendly black lion at the end with his fluffy head and shaved body. Hopefully it helps keep him comfortable during his doggy retirement ❤️
When you said gotta turn you the dog looked surprised 😂
"Oh no,"
I noticed that. He's like no😂
"We're gonna do this AGAIN?!?"
Yes! It was so cute!
@@TheGelasiaBlythe 😆
What a sweet, gentle baby. He must be very loved.
Newfies are the sweetest gentle giants, I've never met one that I didn't want to hug
What a sweet old man. His "im tired and in pain" genuinely reminds me of my elderly mum
Thank you Vanessa for being so kind to him and his Family 👏👏👏✌️❣️
I'm betting that he growled about that one paw because it's probably the most painful. 😢 Newfie's are the sweetest dogs on earth❤. He didn't really mean it.
He's been a good boy all his life.
His neck might hurt more being even with his spine. Art and the boys hit all of the bones I’m afraid. Such a sweet boy and gentle. I so glad you’re doing this for him and his parents. Thank you so much you are the best.
Looks like a gentle old elephant with his lovely short coat. What a sweet old man, and such a compassionate groom. Hello from 🇬🇧.
So glad you are able to help with his grooming. It is my opinion that unless you have arthritis yourself it is hard to imagine how much it hurts. For me personally I didn’t fully comprehend the pain until I am now older and have osteoarthritis. I really give owners of these big furry fur babies a ton of credit for caring for these gentle giants. ❤
He actually looked really good in the end! It always touches my heart when you take on those more challenging Senior cases. If I would be the owner I would be so relieved to have someone taking care so well of my dog.
Poor old man! He's blessed to have you!
Sweet boy. He deserves to be comfortable ❤️❤️
I feel for that big sad snuffleupagus. As The Stones say “What a drag it is getting old”. I hope he feels much better after that cut. Great job as always, Vanessa.
Comfort, & quality of life are always more important than aesthetics, so glad this pupper's people have decided to make him as comfortable as possible!
His paws are so huge! Thank you for accepting this challenging boy.
She did an amazing job. Hope he feels better.
Such a lovely old gentleman of a dog
❤❤❤ to the owners for faithfully loving this boy so long. Caring for a large elderly dog must not be easy, and he's clearly important to them. This shows through in this video. He's such a sweetheart. You guys are lucky to have each other.
11 years old...OMG that is super old for a Newfie. He's ADORABLE.
he just accepted everything... what a good dog. maybe the best of dogs in fact
He has earned his comfort, at eleven years old. What a sweetheart ❤
I love that his name is Cabot. Perfect Newfoundland name for a lovely Newfie boy!
I’m sure your “uneven” cuts are more straight than 90% of other folks’ “straight” cuts! You are so patient with him, and he appreciated it!
CDB saved my senior dog. Then 13 year old female Boston Terrier. Holiday season of 2023 she was showing signs of arthritis and had a hard time doing the stairs in our building and licking all of her legs quite often. Feb 2023 I started her on CBD and by April all her signs and symptoms were gone and have remained gone since. It's 3mg CBD / 10 lbs weight for therapeutical benefit and upto double if needed for medicinal benefit. She's nearly 14 and a half now and still doing well. You can add THC which is 1/4 the dose of the CBC.
It works wonders, I hope your pupper has many more happy years with you 💚🐾
uh, I thought THC was toxic for dogs?
I do wish more people knew the benefits of CBD not only in animals but in people!
My senior cat responds well to cbd. He seems to move a lot better and looks bright eyed and bushy tailed. 🙂 you can tell there is relief.
Poor Cabot. I feel for him, since I’m old and arthritic myself. I hope he feels lots better after his groom.
I have a client with a 12 year old Newfie and his coat is in such bad shape. I feel so bad for him. I gently tried to suggest they get him groomed, but they didn’t
Awe big guy was so good and calm and making it 11 years. Congrats, Cabbot.
Aaw ! He was such a good boy. What a beautiful big bear. Kudos to his owners for looking after him exceptionally well for his age. Thanks Vanessa, miracle worker that you are. I hope you recover soon.👏👏👍👍💖💖
He already looks more comfortable
Quality of life is so much more important than appearances. Good on you for taking good care of an elder pooch like this.
The title of this video, compassionate grooming, describes you so much. You give compassionate grooming to every animal you groom.
This dog makes me tear up. 😢 I don't know why. He is a lovely old poop ❤❤❤
Poor Old Man, I just want to give him a HUGE Hug!!!!
A dogs life is too short😔. My heart always breaks for large breed dogs & their shorter lifespans in compassion to smaller dog breeds. I love that the owners are putting their dogs comfort & health 1st & making sure he get the care he needs.❤❤❤
What a sweet boy. He clearly has a lot of pain and anythingvthat makes him more comfortable is worth it. My recently departed longhaired dachshund had terrible arthritis and would not tolerate brushing unless she'd just had a hot bath and lots of gentle massage. I could comb out her coat while the conditioner was soaking in and then trim her undercarriage, rear end and ear feathers to a level comfortable for her. She always felt good enough to frisk a bit after her bath.
i love your long videos! I let the ads play on all your videos so you and more dogs make more money!!!
hell yeah, i force skip lots of ads cause i hate em, but never here ❤ she doesnt charge these dog’s owners yall❤
He's one biiiiig dawg!!! 😁😁 Good thing he's chill about this! He's 77 dog years old - he's earned the right to lay down.....😀😀 You almost need a turntable for your grooming table..... How long does it take for a double coat dog to grow his coat back after a shaving like this?
This old guy must feel so much better now. It's outrageous that seniors are being refused in normal salons. love his massive front paws 🙂
What a beautiful job on a beautiful old boy. What an absolute sweetheart. Bet he felt a million dollars afterwards!!!!
I don't understand why having a dog laying down would lead to liability issues? You are so good to care for the dogs others won't groom. Bless.
Probably the skin wrinkling up and risk of nicking them or something like that.
Corporate salons are always at risk of being sued over anything and everything. It’s a lot less hassle for them to just refer the dog out. With all of the rules and policies and restrictions they have these days it’s not ideal to groom these types of cases in a corporate setting anyway. It’s too hard physically on the groomer and the dog.
He really does look cute with or without his fur, but he is probably much better. 😊
Nicking their skin, having to forcibly reposition the dog if they won’t stand (which can cause issues for both the dog and the groomer), the cut being bad because they won’t stand, etc.
They don't want to work on dogs that could potentially be injured during grooming. A dog that's unable to stand or is unstable on their feet could slip and be injured easily.
He looks really nice. I am sure he feels much better
Cabot has clearly lived a VERY good life if he's lived it for so long.
Cabot's transformation left him looking handsome and dignified. I'm certain he must feel so much better. Thank you, GWTD, for sharing!

What a sweet boy. My heart goes out to him and his family ❤
What a sweet, gorgeous dog! His paws are so massive! I'm glad he's more comfortable.
It's easy to see that he's tired and sore but tolerated the groom well.
Shaved or not, he is still adorable! I love his big eyes.❤
What a big, beautiful sweet old man.
My boss has 2 of these beautiful dogs. They always lay in front or in her office during the work day. Dogs come in and out past her office and them all day and they don’t care at all! So well behaved and such gentle giants. You did him a great service! 🖤
What a sweet old man.... He totally wins my heart
Especially in a hot climate, it can give them so much relief to shave. Comfort is more important than beauty 🧡
Incorrect. The double coat helps regulate their body temp and protect against the sun.
@@hannahfagerlie6562in theory. i talked to my vet abt it bcs my pom seemed to struggle in summer. she said it doesnt necessarily work and decide on an individual basis.
@@hannahfagerlie6562 As a genuine question, does this mean I could keep a malamute in my tropical country where it's extremely hot for most of the year, if the double coat actually protects the dog from the heat?
@@aesaphyrno you could not, it would be very cruel, the double coat _helps_ but it wouldn't help enough for that :)

Totally understandable that this lovely old boy comfort comes first, 11 is amazing for this breed , he is lovely and you are so good with him like you are with every animal ❤️👏
Oh man this video made me cry. He reminds me sooo much of my bear from childhood. He passed away at 12 and i still miss him every day. We got him when I was 5 and he was the best dog to grow up with. I wish our sweet babies would never have to deal with the pains that come with old age. Cabot’s owners are so blessed to have you groomed him. I learn so much from watching you. He already looks like a weight has been lifted off him. What a sweetie pie!
