Why China Is Beating The U.S. In Electric Vehicles

2021 ж. 22 Нау.

The global electric vehicle market is heating up and China wants to dominate. The country has invested at least $60 billion to support the EV industry and it’s pushing an ambitious plan to transition to all electric or hybrid cars by 2035. Tesla entered the Chinese market in 2019 and has seen rapid growth.
China sold roughly one million more EVs than the U.S. in 2020. But there are signs the U.S. is getting more serious about going electric. President Joe Biden announced a goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and investments in green infrastructure. Watch the video to find out how China came to dominate the market and whether it’s too late for the U.S. to catch up.

  • Another point to add: China has an extensive network of public transportations and high speed rails. People generally do not have the need to drive 2-3 hrs inter-city/province travels for business or for leisure, most of the automobile usage are for daily commutes, which successfully avoided the current shortcomings of EVs (charging time).

  • The US cant even build a high speed rail from LA to Las Vegas 😂, China has thousands of them

    @alomonwo@alomonwo2 жыл бұрын
    • It's because it's not considered that useful or important. And, objectively speaking, it's not. Maybe nice to have in certain very niche cases, but not something that the average Angelino would ever use much. And, since it would cost billions, it would be at high danger of not even recouping its own construction cost. Hence, not worth building. If it were a great economic winner, it would have been done decades ago. The fact that it wasn't should make you question that maybe the economics are different for the US and China. Both the built structure of the societies, the spatial distribution of the population, and the nature of the infrastructure in place (more readily available gas stations make driving simpler) all make driving cars a simpler option for those few occasions when someone in Los Angeles would want to drive out to Vegas. For most middle class people, rushing out to the desert to gamble is honestly not something that pops up that often, to begin with. It's not a pressing travel need. Why should EVERYONE in Cali have to pay higher taxes so that a few people can have easier access to gambling? Not in the public interest.

  • China has multiple points on why they sell so much electric cars. 1) they are making cheap as well as expensive EVs. You can basically get an EV for every pocket. 2) incentives. As pointed in the video, they subsidise a lot of the price to help move from the tradicional ICE engines. 3) public transportation. You can move around town, between towns or cross country with planes, trains, metro, electric buses so you dont need a car to travel the 1000 km between destinations.

    • I assume you're referring to the way in which China requires foreign companies (other than Tesla) to form 50-50 "join ventures" with Chinese companies, right? They won't allow foreign companies to compete on a fair and level playing field with domestic companies in China. The CCP has always been extremely protectionistic towards its precious domestic market and zealously defends it against any foreign company that might actually become a threat. They usually force foreign companies to transfer their intellectual property to the Chinese "partner" in the joint venture, as well, and then that intellectual property is used to compete against the foreign company, not just in China but all over the world. This is the formula that China has used repeatedly in multiple different manufacturing industries. It will likely not work when it comes to EV building, though, because most of the innovation is being done outside of China and foreign firms are finally starting to wise up and refuse to cooperate with joint ventures if the likely result of that "cooperation" is that the company is just signing away the fruits of their research on a delayed basis to a future Chinese competitor.

In fact, US lead in technology starting in the 1950s owed a large part to government funding in NSF, DARPA etc... but it is politically risky. The other big political obstacle would be the special interests representing traditional fossil energy industry. I think US will get entangled fighting itself while China will keep progressing.

    • I wouldn't consider an EV unless you can charge at home or work. We've had EVs since 2013 and charge at home. The only time we ever need a fast charger is when we go on road trips. Tesla superchargers have been the best but Electrify America is also coming along for non-Tesla cars. If the car you are looking at qualifies for the tax credit, I would also suggest looking at leasing since it greatly subsides the payments. We were able to lease two BMW i3s for a net cost of less than $100/month back in 2014.

  • Of course, any country could dominate the U.S. with smaller and more efficient vehicles, EV or otherwise. Where I live in NYC, people seem to enjoy driving oversized gas guzzlers. I suppose they equate vehicle size with wealth and they need to impress other people/friends/women/neighbors, etc. Also, the more powerful the vehicle, the faster they can get from traffic light to traffic light. I have neighbors who drive fairly large SUVs and there's usually only the driver in them. There's also this weird trend for white-collar employees to drive pickup trucks without having any payloads. Go figure. I can't imagine any of those people buying smaller EVs unless the government forced them to. I'm 73 and I get around on my two bikes and a dual-motor electric scooter. I also have my senior transportation pass. I could easily afford some high-end vehicle but I like the exercise although the roads in NYC are in horrible condition. Still, I can easily food shop at local stores. Being retired, I simply don't need to own a car anymore. If an EV the size of a smart car was available with a true range of 100 miles, I might consider it but I still don't even need that. Anyway, I suppose real men have to drive large and expensive vehicles to make themselves feel they're living the good life. Me, I enjoy riding my bike for miles and that makes me feel I'm living the good life.

  • "What we haven't seen is organic growth outside of incentives" Well, how should there be organic growth, with all car manufacturers refusing to make an EV? Where I live, in Switzerland, we have seen slow but steady growth in demand for EVs over the past 20 years. The more practical and the less expensive EV's got, the more demand they generated. Currently, BEVs have a market share of 9%, without virtually any incentives at all. I call that organic demand. After a long phase of slow but steady growth, BEV market share has doubled every year for the past 3 to 4 years. The same happened in other European countries. However, in recent years these countries started dealing out up to 10'000 Euro cash to people who bought an EV, to speed up the transition. That's obviously foolish, but due to that, in Germany for instance EVs now have a higher market share than in Switzerland. But the trend was the same in much of Europe, incentives just sped up the process. The reason for EV adoption to pick up is primarily the availability of a range of appealing models for that specific market. In the European market there are now a few dozen models from a dozen European manufacturers plus four from Korea, two or three from Japan and two from Tesla. There's a similar situation in China. In America OTOH, there's basically only Tesla, and that's not enough to create demand.

  • Subsidies won’t be needed in the U.S. once parity is reached on price. It’s all about the $$$. When Americans can buy an electric vehicle for the same price or cheaper than a petroleum powered version of the same product you’ll see them take off. We’d all love to not be buying gasoline anymore or dealing with petroleum companies randomly jacking up the price of their product. Another issue here is also availability. Tesla dealerships are few and far between. Once things reach the point where you can go to any dealership and find a wide range of EV’s to choose from that will also speed things up. What that also does is ease concerns about not being able to easily have your EV serviced if need be.

So you could have an extra, large battery that you kept charged and swap it in if your main, smaller battery got low. This would allow people to make longer trips on demand and would also allow people to bridge longer distrances between charging stations in more remote areas.

Then Kid A started using his time and energy playing games (wars), Kid B devoted his time studying. One day kid A discovers that Kid B is overtaking him the smart ranking. Instead of trying to make himself better by studying harder, he goes and tells kids C, D, E, F & G to stop borrowing books to kid B doesn't get any smarter. @lisboaluk@lisboaluk2 жыл бұрын
    • It would. Not to mention all the batteries that we currently do not even recycle. Solar and wind will not be able to meet the energy demands of so many people charging. So the electricity must come from either nuclear or coal or natural gas. And since environmentalists hate nuclear for some reason, we will overwhelmingly charge electric cars using natural gas and coal.

  • US vehicles like the tiny Fiat, Smart for two etc are great candidates to be all electric. The average person only needs a 2 seater car for a daily commute to work/around town not a massive heavy gas guzzling 7 seater SUV like a suburban/Tahoe etc. Even a small hatchback like a Toyota Matrix/Nissan Versa/Honda Fit/Hyundai Elantra/Chevy Sonic when electrified can fit the needs of a small family. Make EVs affordable and also increase public charging to make these vehicles appealing to the masses.
