As Tesla looks to expand to new markets, rumors are circulating that India could be next. While the 5th largest auto market could be big for the ev manufacturer, it’s filled with challenges and increasing competition.
There is an electric vehicle revolution sweeping the world, but India is lagging behind. Elon Musk has said that Tesla will enter India this year, but it's not clear if that will actually happen. On January 8th, Tesla took its first step towards launching in the country, registering Tesla Motors India and Energy Private Limited in Bengaluru.
But when Tesla does eventually come to India, it won't be easy. The electric vehicle industry is in its infant stages there, lacking much of the infrastructure needed for widespread adoption. And the most popular vehicles are motorcycles, rickshaws and budget passenger cars. Watch the video to find out what Tesla will be up against in India.

Also 2 wheeler EV market in Huge, almost 2/10 scooters are electric in many cities. India is going for long term for EVs, lithium refining, exploring, battery tech everything is gov funded now. Manufacturing is the part India wants to focus on with passenger adoption. CNBC should interview people who understand EV tech and real experts rather than a few people here who actually don't know what's actually being happening behind the scenes

There is a huge difference between American roads and Indian roads. If autopilot works there then it can work anywhere in the world!
Autopilot have sucked many times on American roads. And autopilot could only work on expressways in India.
Autopilot doesn't work on British roads. The only place I've seen autopilot work well is suburban and rural Canada where driver's give each other a lot of room and are very much offended by people driving too close to them. Anyway, I'm interested in seeing if Tesla does well in India because that will mean they have found a cheaper way to build & maybe addressed infrastructure issues. I come from Britain but live off grid in rural Canada. I already have a Tesla powerwall for solar power. I've considered the Tesla truck, but it needs to come down in price to be feasible in rural Canada, not to mention it's poor performance in cold weather. We need our vehicles performing in -40 Celsius. I can keep my powerwall warm but I can't keep an EV battery warm once we're on the road. Tesla sells to Canada but we're not a large enough market for Tesla to address issues here. We have to watch what happens in larger markets with some similar issues.
No we dont want autonomous driving here. We have a large workforce dedicated to driving. Even if it succeeds on congested Indian roads, it means suddently a lot of drivers would be jobless, Nitin Gadkari raised the point as well. We are not europe, we have a lot of manpower. Absolutely not , not if they keep using stock footage from a decade back or keep going to overcrowded streets and slums
@Sweden Salmon lol don’t talk based on assumptions and stereotypes, i do agree there are poor ppl in the country but that doesn’t mean the country is poor , india’s gdp crossed britan’s and will overtake others by 2050 , it growing at rate of 11.26%
@Sweden Salmon What do you even know about India?
Tesla can expect to face in India -: 1. India’s High Taxes 2. Fierce Competition 3. High Volume, Low Margin Environment
Where do u get these Fake Facts
@@aperture0 Well India is a Poor Country, not many People Pay Tax in India ...therefore things like Cars,Jewelleries,AC etc come under luxury category in India..so to Balance the Revenue-- Expenditure ..It is must for India to increase them over low Volume Comparably Expensive Stuff
Advantages Tesla can get in India 1. Around 1 lakh subsidy from state government to buy EV 2. Income tax deduction of interest paid on loan for buying EV cars
@@ashutoshsaraswat8350 lol...there is exemption on ev vehicles they fall in 5% GST regime
@@kkhmdfk that's for Indian evs.... TESLA will atleast as of now will have to export to India.. Either from US or China. They will face Custom duty... Which is 100%
There are a lot of cars sold in india, just because other companies are not able to figure out how to crack the market does not mean the market is not good and also it does not mean that tesla will not get it. Please do not forget that even USA lacked charging infrastructure at some time and tesla played a major role in creating it. Why do all American and European companies have a habit to complain. Why do they always want things to be served them on a platter. If you are good in your work be ready to compete. Japanese companies are never heard complaining... soup for thought
Lol the thumbnail got me chuckle.
Those visuals you've shown about India, they are atleast 10 years old. You won't find 90% those vehicle's today on Indian roads.
And these people judge India, demean the image! CNBC is crap.
@@akshaypendyala what's with indians always crying about unfair depiction of india by media, you people are hilariously butthurt and overly proud.
@@LegendNinja41 well we don't depict Americans as racist school shooting fat clown and country as current day Detroit then why show India which doesn't even exist today
@@footballsoccer9294 lmao even Detroit is 1000x more developed and cleaner than Indian streets.
@@LegendNinja41 well atleast we don't show the amount of racism black people and hate muslims have to go through in usa. We don't show the bullying that starts at such young age in your schools. Atleast we have some ethics but u... huh leave it. Get busy with your racism
Tesla would run 10km per unit and it is very low compared to ICE vehicles. Tesla's battery runs for million miles, so it makes perfect purchase if they launch sub $20000 car.
they should show devloped part of the cities like gurugram and delhi too and many southern cities are also very devloped .If they can show this so we can also show the US border situation
On which Coin should I stake my today to see futre past ?
The main problem is the price
Indians are extremely price conscious, it's gonna take a decade for sure
You forgot to say 'poor' which translates into price consciousness.
@@viveksharma9566 not necessarily we have 5% poverty rate gdp per capita doesn't account for cost of living across different countries
@@footballsoccer9294 Even if we take GDP per capita in PPP terms, it is still very low
@@viveksharma9566 yes but it cost less to live just the amount of things an I could afford in india is way greater than people in Norway and in us
@@footballsoccer9294That is what I said. Even if we account for cost of living, the income is still low.
Tesla in India - - - AI cries.
Nowadays the roads are more better than previous years The road quality index is just right behind China. In some cases the roads are more better than many countries
Lol😂😂
@@hriday1341 not comparing but if in China 50% of road is newly built in India only 5-10% is newly built.
@@AkshathAgarwal 50 % national highways are built in the past 10 years in india Also china builds 25 km of roads per day and India is building 35 km of national highways per day

Affordability, charging infrastructure, service network and charging time decides the rapid growth of EV market in India. Personally, I think we are not yet ready for electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles suits more.
Quick answer: no because the majority can’t afford them
Maybe tesla can produce ev's in india then exports to other nations
They can if they make a mini cheaper model but also provide good range on the battery. Most EVs here only give a max range of 300km or less. If Tesla can go 500+kms people would start considering it.
@@rajatsingh3195 That makes a lot of sense.

I am not sure about self driving but I'm pretty sure EVs are gonna be very successful here
Definitely! If I ever buy a car in future, it will be EV, just hope more charging points will be set up throughout the country.
No ev won’t be successful in India…
@@tenzinkunga9406 why?
Ola is building world's largest electric scooter factory
Lost me when you said "importing ev cars is the best idea ".
lol 100% import duty plus 28% gst 😭
TATA laughing hard
Tesla should launch affordable cars and provide Nation wide service centers and charging stations. Then Tesla would be successful in India . Affordability, cheap and vast service network is key for success in Indian automotive industry.
Bring small car, Not model 3, Keep cost below 13 lakhs, Range 300km. Will definitely succeed.
+ Charging station infrastructure isn't there.
Yes an affordable hatchback
For that tesla have to setup a team of indian engineers. Only indians knew what we need.
Tesla could succeed in India if they just ate some humble pie and made a damn electric scooter. But they're too attached to being seen as an upmarket brand to do that.
13 lacs. Sounds way too cheap for a tesla. But for that they need to be making in India and as of now that is a distant dream.
1:24 "driving lane inconsistencies" is a little generous lol
have you ever visited place other than old delhi and dhravi mumbai

Renault has just launched a new cheap EV thru is subsidiary Dacia. Autonomy is about 200 km and cost around 12/14000 €. A good challenge to compete on mass market which has little or no low cost model. Interesting to see how this EV is going to perform in the next future.
I’ve been saying they ain’t coming to india anytime soon. Too much taxes and governments don’t have business friendly
Yep. Indian government sucks.
Tax on EV is just 5%.Uneducated idiot.Government is doing it's best but only few can buy and that's fine.It should be in Creta price range I'm sure it will sell like hot cakes.
@@ChrisGilliamOffGrid can't deny on that..
@@ChrisGilliamOffGrid the Tesla models which where exported to India are made in China. That's why they were giving 100 % much tax import duties on tesla cars. Indian government wanted tesla should setup manufacturing plants in India. But elon musk neglected it
You guys should probably change the stock footage of India. I've been seeing the same footage of Old Delhi for over 10 years now. There are good places in India too.
Eagerly waiting for Tesla in India 👍🇮🇳
not happening anytime soon...
@Mr k does your country has tesla lol
Bro its is already here 😑
Soon India ll export Tesla cars..🎉
Come on CNBC! Solving impossible problems is like the thing of Elon! He will definitely come up with some ground up different solutions, He just need some time to think in this crazy Mars Colonializing Competition that's going on RN.
He can come up with the technology but can he sell it at an affordable price?
i hope tesla will succeed in every country as it decreases air pollution, our earth is dying 🤞
0:44 Good work on being able to pronounce Bengaluru.
Two wheeler will be captured by many electric startups, tata motors and mg motors will capture a lot of market share, tesla will be bought by many luxury car owners just to show that they have a tesla.
CNBC is still using a decade old stock footage, I am starting to wonder are they doing this on purpose?
😂😂😂😂😂😂 After reading the title I can't stop laughing 😂😂😂
Welcome to india a place where some people get driving licence without knowing road rules.
Le Government: THEEN GOONA LAGAAN DEINA PADEGA........
Only if it is Manufactured outside India.... If they Manufacture Here ...there are no additional Tax
@@Mr.Mister420 to be fair that is quite genius idea. China did the same thing and their cars are improving, sure they still makes lot of knockoffs but in the next 5-10 years they might be like Japanese/Korean.
May be a basic model 3 at 25-30 lac ( 35k- 42k USD) and 250 mile range
30lakhs is too much... Tata electric cars are much cheaper. They'll get more cheaper too once Tata starts manufacturing their own batteries.
😀😅
Really good informative video! TY ! I feel it is a fast nickels vs slow dimes issue. Were Tesla to sell a motorizing kit for retrofitting some old gas burning three wheelers to BEVs it would get a foothold that plausibly would prove useful. Reduction in pollution; Experience with retrofit kits; and the fact that so many Indians are mechanically savvy would be a nice source of IP for Tesla. The insights gained by doing on a tiny scale what first hindered Tesla in the early retrofit for cars days could prove invaluable. Imagine if Tesla were to secure the entire retrofit industry in India and that was to prove exportable. Revenue for Tesla and for India.
The best and easy solution for Tesla would be to open manufacturing facilities in India to export in Asia and the rest of the world to an extent, it would be cheaper than in China and it’s always good to be less reliant on China for manufacturing.
Love from India. We r eagerly waiting for tesla in India. Actually here in India, we don't have a proper EV option that is reliable. In addition to that, there are very few charging stations in Limited cities only. I Hope Tesla will make a difference.

@Krishnkant Singh if give a budget hatchback offering in 15-20 lakh and free electricity like US U will get many customers in India
Tesla will initially not sell a lot of cars in India, but will create a lot of attention towards electric cars and show the benefits of electric cars.
@Krishnkant Singh but this1% is more than many europian countries total population 😀😀
@Sweden Salmon Tesla will introduce itself as a luxury brand and later generations will b for the upper middle class. And talking on the poor population, who dont have toilet, they r not going to buy cars anytime soon. The economy won't Stop for them to grow.
Imo their factory there might not manufacture vehicles but solar panels. Big country, much space and a lot of sunlight.
