10 years ago I made a short documentary about my grandfather who was 80 at the time and still cycling everyday. The video got a lot of attention and was even Staff Picked by Vimeo!
This was my first proper short documentary and of course it was made with limited gear, experience and budget.
Fortunately my grandfather is still with us and very much cycling almost as often as before so I wanted to revisit this idea and create a new documentary for his 90th.
The plan was not to create a copy of the original one of course but to shoot this with a bigger crew and create a new documentary with a different angle and stronger visual style, which I think we achieved!
For this one I also wanted to include some of his brothers and friends and give the opportunity to them to express what they feel about my grandfather.
This is probably my most personal and important project to date due to how close I am to the subject but also since I was directing and not covering every single aspect of the project as I am more used to.
It was a great collaborative experience to be able to bring in talented and close friends like Alex and Clement which elevated the production value of this documentary and of course the final result.
This documentary would have not been possible without the amazing support from Artlist and Filmconvert, and would have not looked as good without the support of DZOFILM and Nanlite.
BTS and cinematography breakdown videos coming soon!
Shot on the BMPCC6K and 6K Pro in July 2023, in the South West of France.
(Earphones recommended)
Let me know if you have any questions :).
Cheers,
Flo

It's almost romantic how people help people in the cycling community; it's a very special thing to witness and experience.

  • My Italian/French father is turning 90 and has been an avid cyclist as long I can remember. Your grandfather reminded me of him and so I forwarded your doc to him. He loved it so much he asked me if there would be a way for him to reach out and send a personal message to your grandfather. Although he immigrated to Canada when he was 25, he has family in Italy and France and has visited often; it is where his heart is. If there might be a private way for my Dad to reach out, it would be appreciated. I think he found a kindred spirit in your grandfather.

I'm sure he's proud to see the art his own family can create especially this documentary of him. Your team did a fantastic job capturing the raw emotions of his past present and future, and I'm sure your family is extremely grateful for portraits just like this one.

  • What a beautiful film. I watched with great emotion and feeling, and total identity with your grandfather's love of cycling. I lost my brother Tony in 2007, aged 41, killed whilst cycling, and I lost my remaining brother John in 2022, aged 57, just as we were about to cycle the Routes des Grandes Alpes. Me and my brothers were going to go on like this, enjoying cycling together till our old age. I feel very inspired that families like yours love and cherish each other and the time they spend on their bikes. Wonderful.

  • ❤ Much love for this video and your grandfather. I not often call something "inspiring" but this is something - what else would be inspiring if not this video, his life, his late start in cycling and those memories made with it. Thank you for sharing this. This is a great homage to your grandfather. I started cycling 3 years ago with being 40 and thought being late; but this gives me so much - the imagination of being lucky enough to do it for another 50 years? WOW! Thank you!

At the moment I have to give up the cycling for a while. Life caught up; works, raising kids, et cetera. Like your grandfather said, cycling took so many hours to do. But mark my words, I will soon pick up the pedal once more.

  • I came for the shots, stayed for the story. If you ever decide to discuss the how-to's behind filming this, I'd be more interested in finding out what went on in preproduction and the timing of filming each scene (ie. shooting after/before the interviews, spontaneous shooting of the family gathering, b-roll to add to the story, etc.). Even without a BTS video, this doc has been very helpful and inspiring. Thank you, Florent and the whole Piovesan family! I'm sure you made everyone proud! ✌

And he’s 90? welp what’s my excuse? and I’m 26 I love it 10 outta 10 Brotha peace and blessings and happy new year thank you for this I just wanted to see the lens quality just to watch the entire short and now I’m mad that it ended 😂💯
