Meet new-to-town bicycle mechanic and cyclist Ian, in our latest film “Ride”.
It’s the human power of turning feet over and over in a supple motion and the rhythm of your body moving side to side in time with the bike that has Ian enamoured. If he isn’t riding bikes, he is fixing bikes.
Bike Revive Tumut is set to become a local institution, a legacy where people connect over a shared zest for bikes. A place for cycling in all forms be it mountain biking, road biking, gravel riding, bike packing or e-biking.
“Ride your bike, don’t just romance the idea. Ride.”
About Bike Revive Tumut:
Bike Revive Tumut is a fully equipped bicycle service business that makes cycling accessible and easy through bike set-up and maintenance. Bike mechanic, Ian Downing works on bikes of all types, from basic entry-level to high-end performance. Ian Downing has been riding bikes and working on them since the 1970s, and his passion for bikes only continues to grow.
Bike Revive Tumut is also home to a collection of bikes from the decades, including brands such as Surly, Jones, Specialised, Trek etc.

  • Just turned 87 this September. Been riding forever. A lifetime sport. Just traded my Lemond Zurich for a rather expensive Specialized eBike. Bought this for an expected move to a home up a long, steep hill in Washington state. That changed, but here in Tucson, Arizona I ride this one daily for 90 minutes up and down a local highway. Traffic zooms by at 65 mph, but you have to just accept it as part of the game. After my Dutch wife died, I traveled to Holland and rented a bike at a local bike shop. Rode that bike all over that great country. A very bicycle friendly country. Fietspads everywhere.

I couldn't agree more with the sentiment behind that line. It's all about taking action and experiencing the joy of riding your bike. Speaking of which, have you heard about the new project I found? It's called the Morph eBike by freebeat, and it's truly a game-changer. Not only does it offer an exhilarating riding experience with its powerful motor and impressive suspension, but it also has a unique indoor recharge feature. This means you can keep the energy flowing even when you're riding indoors. How awesome is that? Can't wait to get my hands on one! Keep pedaling and enjoying your rides, my friend! 🚴‍♂️

  • I was in a car accident when I was 16. A guy had come out of nowhere and turned our car into a "U" shape. My step mom, who was driving, died instantly. From then on, I stopped wanting to drive. I go by bus and bike. Once covid hit, I didn't ride for the entirety of 2020 and 2021. I am getting back into it, and learning more about bikes in the process. It's funny really, I have rode all my life, and yet you would be surprised at how much I don't know. I am learning so much. I feel like this is the lifestyle I want.

    • That is so true. I'm just a casual commuting utilitarian cyclist in rural Ireland but it's great to get out on my pretty basic Merida hybrid covered in racks and bags and mirrors and lights and all sorts of accessories that make it uniquely and wonderfully my own and do whatever I have to do instead of taking the car. Put one of my three trailers on and do the weekly household shopping, take the lawnmower in for a service, pick up 50 litres of tractor diesel. But as I'm getting older and had some coronary issues recently and developing arthritis in both knees and a hip I'm not going to apologise when I either add an electric conversion or/and get a full e-bike. Even without those reasons there's so much more I could do and further I could go with a little bit of "e"! And I do also own and need a car.

Took it out, considered it, modified it and I ride everyday. It’s not a top end bike and some mechanics and bike shops make fun. But I love it and the freedom it gives me.

Added 26” Maxxis Ardent Race tires. Spank handlebars, Ergon Women’s saddle. It still has the proprietary Cannondale Headshok 80mm travel front suspension but for what I use it for, it works.

  • Back then 35 years ago as a kid I rode my bike and enjoyed it - cause most of my freedom was my bike. I could strawl around, meet my friends and experience adventures. Then I got my driving license and forgot my bike. I drove an enduro motorcycle and afterwards a car. Now I'm over 40 years and got back to the beginning with an enduro mountain bike. And again I can strawl around, meet my friends and experience adventures. Hopefully my little son will ride with me someday as well.

Had a coworker/neighbor one day challenge me because I said it’s only a few minutes longer than with a car. He said he could beat me by fifteen minutes or more. He beat me by fourteen. He said if traffic had been better he would have won. I said even if he had, my mind was in a better place than his because I didn’t get stressed by traffic I enjoyed my ride! I miss that!

I don't do the insane things I did on my BMX bike as a kid, but that same sense of freedom and flying is still there. I've dropped (and kept off) 40lbs, and my mental health is so much better. I'm glad it didn't take another decade to remember how much I love to ride.

You see plenty of wildlife and the sunrise is always perfect. In winter my nose is freezing, but couldn't care less. That one morning an owl following along makes all the harsh mornings fall in to place. Keep it low tech, keep it simple, just do it. Good luck with the shop. Blessings from Belgium.

  • As a cyclist who discovered my true love for cycling after 50, I hear ya! Riding makes me feel like a kid. Even hills are part of that feeling. And speed. There MUST be SPEED. 😊

  • Top video. Nice scenery and no traffic. Don’t get the whole e-bike craze as they’re not human powered. Perhaps we’re getting weaker. I remember the tiny cassette from 80’s and steel frames too.

  • I just recently finished a custom build on a Midnight Special frameset, and have been enjoying it immensely. It began with a year of envisioning the build after Surly released it, followed by 1-2 years of no inventory on frames & components (thanks Covid), then 10 months to gradually build it in my spare time. So it's cool to see people like Ian taking theirs out & putting on the miles.

  • Love it! Just ride! It's the best thing you can do as an old fart for your heart and health.....for your pocket book....for the environment. My commuter is an 80's rebuilt girls MTB. Nothing fancy, just an old bike nobody wanted that I added a little love and attention. Now it is my best friend.

  • I can 100% identify with this film, most of the time I use my bikes for urban transport and I don't have a single new bike, I keep my old ones alive and they ride very smoothly.... Too many bikes? n+1........😄

It doesn't matter the brand of bike, rather how we choose to experience bring on a bike. I love your bike shop with the pool table there and how you mentioned about it bring a gathering place. 😀
