    • dmonkface they do it differently to every socio-economic group. Each level up it becomes more sophisticated, so people can readily identify it amongst other groups outside their own, but become blind to the fact that it’s happening to them. There are common characteristics with members of same group. Almost herd mentality. People in search of same thing eventually settle in same type of communities & over time become more and more alike. Similar income, jobs, houses, interests, cars, clubs... it becomes easier to identify groups and market people. That’s what all the data mining, surveys, geo-tagging and internet search algorithms are all about.

Until we can all collectively remove our complacency aka 'consent' , this viscous cycle we're all in will not be broken.

The conundrum is that because we're still a part of the collective, we get dragged down by the majority who like to glamorize the grind lifestyle. Its just a bunch of gaslighting and brainwashing to make us think that hard labor is something to strive for. Maybe it is for some, but not for someone like me.

Nina Simone said it best - Freedom is a feeling, freedom is no fear. As long as another persons idea scares you (ie a conspiracy theory/possible negative outcome of sorts) you will not have the freedom of choice in that which governs your mind and therefore you will be either eating or eaten. Freedom of will has always been hindered by fear in humanity.

He is even less capable of spotting any inconsistency between successive facts; man's capacity to forget is unlimited. • @@BrettDuncanSEO They've known it even longer than that. Like historical documentation on the detailed workings of imperialism. But that's the thing when it comes to capitalism; it's a system that appears to be working ideally because it's success is bound by the shared perception that it's working ideally. Or in more clear terms, it's a system run on mass deception of the people through propaganda. It even goes beyond the educational institutions and mainstream media. These days, the most effective tool of American propaganda, is the entertainment/social media. I'd argue that Netflix/Disney plus, and Facebook/KZhead have a more widespread effect than the news at this point.

  • Chomsky is often described as one of the best-known figures of the American left, although he doesn't agree with the usage of the term. He has described himself as a "fellow traveller" to the anarchist tradition, and refers to himself as a libertarian socialist, a political philosophy he summarizes as challenging all forms of authority and attempting to eliminate them if they are unjustified for which the burden of proof is solely upon those who attempt to exert power. He identifies with the labor-oriented anarcho-syndicalist current of anarchism in particular cases, and is a member of the Industrial Workers of the World. He also exhibits some favor for the libertarian socialist vision of participatory economics, himself being a member of the Interim Committee for the International Organization for a Participatory Society.

We come up with different ways of organizing and formating it, but media has always had the flaws that he lists because they are HUMAN flaws. Accepting this timeless feature of human nature, you just have to confront the fact that every piece of media you've ever consumed was also suseptible to these flaws. • I like the documentary, but I wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea about the book Manufacturing Consent. The book demonstrates limitations of the media, regardless of whether you think this is the result of a purposeful agenda by a specialized class, by presenting a propaganda model as the logical conclusions of a detailed explanation of the economic constraints of the media. A few quotes from the first chapter, which are supported with specific evidence and elaborated on to great detail in the book, are below to give some idea. "A propaganda model focuses on this inequality of wealth and power and its multilevel effects on mass-media interests and choices. It traces the routes by which money and power are able to filter out the news fit to print, marginalize dissent, and allow the government and dominant private interests to get their messages across to the public. The essential ingredients of our propaganda model, or set of news "filters," fall under the following headings: (1) the size, concentrated ownership, owner wealth, and profit orientation of the dominant mass-media firms; (2) advertising as the primary income source of the mass media; (3) the reliance of the media on information provided by government, business, and "experts" funded and approved by these primary sources and agents of power; (4) "flak" as a means of disciplining the media; and (5) "anticommunism" as a national religion and control mechanism." "The elite domination of the media and marginalization of dissidents that results from the operation of these. filters occurs so naturally that media news people, frequently operating with complete integrity and goodwill, are able to convince themselves that they choose and interpret the news "objectively" and on the basis of professional news values." "Before advertising became prominent, the price of a newspaper had to cover the costs of doing business. With the growth of advertising, papers that attracted ads could afford a copy piece well below production costs. This put papers lacking in advertising at a serious disadvantage: their prices would tend to be higher, curtailing sales, and they would have less surplus to invest in improving the salability of the paper (features, attractive format, promotion, etc.). For this reason, an advertising-based system will tend to drive out of existence or into marginality the media companies and types that depend on revenue from sales alone. With advertising, the free market does not yield a neutral system in which final buyer choice decides. The advertisers' choices influence media prosperity and survival."

That ONLY if you ASSUME the following: That "The advertisers' choices influence media prosperity and survival..." to the point were the individual makes NO CHOICES whatsoever. And THAT is a loooong stretch. By that token we can say advertisers themselves are under some sort of spell (profit) which compels them to "advertise" not for the good of humanity, but for their own good. Was that not the case BEFORE advertisement? Meaning, is advertising at fault here? And also, how do you take advertisement out of any "business" equation? I mean, you want to sell something: isn't "talking about it", the fact that you got something to sell, already some form of advertisement? When you look for jobs, aren't you then advertising your own capabilities? as being above the rest of competitors? Well, to me, that's Chomsky's biggest fallacy. Of course advertisement is an easy culprit, but aren't we all responsible in the end? Of course, he puts it, again, in a way as though we are all instead simply helpless victims. That's the way Chomsky puts it, transforming us all, by definition, into "victims" of the devices of a dominant and all knowing class.

    • ok, that was a bit long, but what I wanted to say basically is: "With advertising, the free market does not yield a neutral system..." How could any commercial system lack any form of advertisement???? Am I not allowed to talk about the product I want to sell to you?? How do I even come about selling it then?????! How is there free market AT ALL if I am not allowed to say, whatever I want to say about what I got to offer???? Then if you buy it and does not come to the expectations I set up you simply won't buy from me again. ---> I can only but see a free market mechanism here at work. WITH or WITHOUT advertisement.

Of course, in countries with free speech digital media giants don't filter in the same way as the New York Times, GE, etc. So I think the discourse has broadened and definitely changed and become more "diverse", which is mostly great, but at the same time, as McLuhan said, "The medium is the message, " so our discourse is shaped by the peculiarities of the tweet and the short video and screens and anonymity. Of course, digital media has the potential to be ruthless controlled, as we see in China.

      @faintscrawl@faintscrawl Жыл бұрын
    • @@faintscrawl Good point! You could also argue that the control is already ruthless. Idiots feeling content tweeting about their disapproval of governments without actually doing anything about it is the perfect substitute for action. The algorithms on twitter are designed to make you interact with twitter more, a lot of political people mostly interact on twitter when they're angry with someone. Algorithms deliberately want us to get angry because its easier to have a fight with a stranger on the internet and go about your day than it is to organise and see real change. Here in the UK the left is destroyed and the ones that are left are fighting amongst each other about stupid things.

The only thing that can be done, the same thing that has been done throughout history… The people at the top get fewer and higher on the mountain, the people at the bottom grow in numbers and sink. Until the foundation of people at the bottom break and decide to blow up the whole mountain. We create a society, people fall into efficiency, hierarchy’s are formed, control shifts to the top, and the loss of control at the bottom causes revolution. This is the name of the game, it will happen over and over again. Yet each iteration gets better, as we (hopefully) learn from our mistakes. This is really how all process’ in life work. Birth/growth/decay birth/growth/decay, with better and better iterations. Perfection is impossible, but thats why they say life is a game. A game to attempt to claim.
