28-year-old self-employed entrepreneur David Sher recorded the heart-pumping scene whilst camping in Xai Xai, Botswana he shared his footage and story with LatestSightings.com.
Xai Xai campsite is situated close to the Chobe River in Botswana. Tall trees, sandy riverbeds, and open plains surround the camp. You can hear birds singing and see the water moving slowly by. Sometimes, animals like elephants come close to the water where you can watch them quietly.
"During our drive to the Xai Xai Campsite, where we were set to spend the night, we found ourselves driving along a sandy road by the river. We didn’t have much hope at the time of spotting anything, but that’s when we stumbled upon a pride of lions-a pleasant surprise!"
“It was a very serene few hours spent observing their routine, from waking to quenching their thirst and leisurely strolling. But the calmness was soon disrupted as they spotted the giraffe. The change in their pace was instant. They went from lazily walking to laser-focused stalking, slipping into hunting mode!”
The lions crept up very quietly, getting closer and closer to the big giraffe. They spread out, each lion going to a good spot where they could jump out. The giraffe didn't see them at first because it had to bend its long neck down to drink. But then, all of a sudden, the giraffe saw the lions all around it. That's when the lions ran after the giraffe, and it took off running down the road with the lions right behind it. It was amazing to see how it all happened right there!
Lions hunting giraffes is really interesting to watch. When lions hunt giraffes, they have to work as a team because giraffes are not only big; they're also strong and can kick hard. They have to be smart and quiet as they sneak up on the giraffe. Then they rush out all at once to try to surprise it. Giraffes can defend themselves by kicking really hard, so the lions have to be careful.
"It was just beautiful to witness the sheer will to live from the giraffe and the lions' natural instincts in play-even if they didn't result in a kill."
After the chase, the tired lions went to lie down in the river bed. They looked like they were comforting each other because they missed catching the giraffe. David watched them quietly and took pictures as the sun was setting. The light was golden and beautiful. It was a perfect moment for photos. This is how lions learn: by trying and sometimes missing, just like we do when we are learning something new.

Big life lesson... drink responsibly!
Haha!

Don't be caught lacking
And always be aware of your surroundings!😅
😅😅😂
If it wasn’t for all the noise by the cars, the odds are that the giraffe would have heard / sensed the lions well before!
That giraffe galloping and turning so close to the camera was such a beautiful thing to watch...
If I was a animal in Africa I would start to realize that those annoying noise machines humans drive bring some kind of bull$hit 😂

Ha! I knew as soon as it started running it would leave the lions in its dust.
It was probably an opportunistic warm up as the sun went down. That or the Lions were being lazy and or knew that they had little luck of bringing down a full grown male giraffe with minimal numbers. Considering a lionesses hunting speed is 80km/h compared to a giraffes 60km/h, if they wanted to, they could have outrun it, but it’s a case of energy expenditure vs the uncertain likelihood of them actually being able to bring down a bull giraffe.
@@reginarichards6261🙌🏼 100% valid points, but yes ultimately that was a huge male! Even if they got a hold of him, it would have been potentially a very risky move unless they had the pride males for leverage. Giraffe calves and females are one thing…bulls are next level power (I’ve seen the damage they do to each other firsthand let alone predators) the size of their heads as it is! and if he decides to swing at them….Lordy.
The diesel engine sound masked the sound of the approaching lions. It's why the giraff didn't move. These things are loud af. If lions figured it out by themselves, and used the diesel engine sound to mask their own sounds of approaching, that's an amazing thing by itself. But who knows.
💀💀💀 you telling me the giraffe didnt hear the trucls rolling up and take a glance? Lions just blend in pretty well
@@augustineacevedo37 They're used to those vehicles. and 99 out of 100 they don't bring lions with them. No reason to look.
I have read that lions habe figured it out
These off-road vehicles are like the paparazzi in Hollywood.
Imagine walking to the pub for a drink, or the supermarket for supplies, and the next second you have to run at top speed or you will be eaten.

Sadly, in America that's not far from the truth.
In the end it looked like prime Usain Bolt kicking dust! 😅
The giraffe ducking through the trees is what tricked the lions 😂

Caught off guard by the noise of the column cart... but luckily the girafe circus performer's power was activated
Giraffes have proficient fighting skills, can also gallop, and were used as gifts by ancient Egyptian kings to show strength. Little is known about this seemingly familiar animal. .
wish they were smart enough to use their “skills” 😭
Ha, ha, those lions are taking chances 😅... The hunger is real out there....
Poor hungry lionesses
No bs
Lion 1: Truth or dare? Lion 2: Dare. Lion 1: I dare you to catch that giraffe. Lion 2: Shit.
The world doesn't need any more photos of animals. Just watch and enjoy people.
Definitely the noise of your diesel vehicle helping lions get “cover”

Later on, giraffes will learn that a slow moving jeep equals a stalking lion nearby
Why do we get the video of a passenger with his view blocked and not the guy with a camera right outside the window?
The ergonomic creation of the giraffe by the Creator presented a considerable challenge to the lions.
Inexperienced lions, must be their first giraffe. An experienced pride that got that close would have eaten very well for the next week.
Not true at all lmfao. Adult giraffes are rare kills and to formidable.
Not really. It's extremely rare for lions to kill an adult giraffe. We've only see it once on video.
They missed by a few seconds

Worst camera work in history
🤗 I Absolutely Agree!!!😢
You can alway tell the grade of the cameraman by his zoom.
@trailrideadventures🤗 Rookies
The humans were masking the sound of the approaching lion pride with their unnatural loud cars. Those humans suck. That's what I saw.
drinking but not drunk, I believe 😄
Giraffe escapes 20 Lions while drunk is a more correct tittle 👌
😂😂😂😂
The noise of the truck also drowns any noise by the Lungs approaching and puts the giraffe under false security.
Good for the giraffe to always pack a Red Bull for such instances...
😂
How can educated humans keep driving with that horrible engine noises disturbing the whole wild life episode. The vehicle was so close to zoom n shoot that video but they kept going even closer.
Giraffes alwys look like they running in slow motion lol😅

@@nobots27 to lions yes. Have never heard aboutbit being eaten by humans
Ironically luckily for the giraffe they actually run pretty fast thanks to their tall legs, and it's hard to bring them down.
Videos like these are not uncommon. Correct me if you think I'm wrong, but you're not supposed to impact natural moments. I think there should be a minimum range tourist cars can go to these situations. When animals are so close they're running around your car, that's too far. Impeding space could hinder or help either animal... for clicks? Maybe I'm ignorant, but it seems unethical. It's fine in small quantity, but now it seems like a cowboy industry gone out of control.
Agree with you 💯. Was actually irritated by how close they stayed to the animals during the hunt! And that engine noise!
I have noticed in most of these hunting videos, there's an ignored bird or small animal making final alarm calls but the animals ignore them.
go team giraffe
That giraffe was actually performing in front of a group of lions. LoL
Imagine being the RTard driving aside animals using stealth. Selfish af lol
I dont want a car with Horsepower anymore i want a car with Giraffepower! He/She was out like the wind, i see why they're such a rare kill.
Acceleration beats top speed in any chase
I'm sorry, this shouldn't be allowed by whoever runs that reserve/the government. Cameras can do a great job zooming in nowadays, there's no need to not only get that close to a chase, but to constantly keep moving towards it. You have no idea where the animal(s) are going to want to run, and you risk altering what the outcome would've otherwise been - indeed, the giraffe basically did a u-turn towards the vehicle. It reminds me of a video I saw from a reserve (I think Kruger, might be wrong) where the amount and proximity of cars seemed to essentially severely limit the escape options of a gazelle, who was promptly killed by its pursuers after practically running into a car - something that might not have happened otherwise. What I'm seeing in this video is shameful, they should've stopped where the other car in the vid did. But I doubt reserves/governments take this stuff seriously, from what I've seen anyway. Wouldn't want to discourage shitty tourists when they need that tourism money. Beyond that, just the cheek of these guys to send in the video being taken by the driver, wtf. Like yeah guys, send the vid with the armpit zoom-in, and not from the passenger looking out the window. All this really ruined what would've been a cool video, imo
move there and show them how to do their job, goofy
Agree with you 100%! Surely you can observe the hunt from an acceptable distance, and switch off your engine!!
Most drivers stay out of the way, occasionally you get a guy who doesn't give a shit. Often other safaris will honk and persuade the bad driver to move out of the way. This happens frequently with elephants.
@Sarlat7🤗 I agree, and it really wasn't that good of a video, it didn't really capture when the giraffe got away, the camera was moving around too much 😳 and I didn't see👀 20 lions.🙄
@@pairrynwatson4229 moan and groan a little more and maybe you'll get your money back, goofy
WOW!!! Incredible!!!
wow that was like watching a film without cuts
Such acceleration! Wow wow
20 lions never had a chance against even a surprised giraffe. Only way they’re taking him out is if he’s injured.
The Lions had the strength of the group but the Giraffe had the stamina to continue.
I am so happy saved
My guy just wanted to drink
At least it quench thirsty and is safe.
🤗 Did u mean it quenched its thirst⁉🤔
It probably was still thirsty because it had to stop drinking when the neighbors came.
Damn that guy is tall!
Very tall.
Giraffe was running from the cars. 😅
I was waiting for one of the lions to sweep the leg
Luck favoured both - Giraffe could escape, at the same time the surprise factor didnt work inspite of large numbers but werr lucky enough to escape from the giraffes kick which was strong enough to blast their brains. Lucky day for all
20 lions? I only ever saw four at once.
@Regfife🤗 I didn't see👀 20 lions either!🙄
If you look closely 2 of the lions bump into each other right near the Giraffe. That's when got up and started running
Cleary the difference between lions and poachers. The lioness quickly realise the strengh and speed of their prey and let her escape to hunt something more weak. Hunters would track to death and kill this beatiful and strong giraffe for nothing except flex😒 Both animal deserve our respect here, predators and prey❤❤❤
You don't have to insult humans to convey your love for the animals.
@@SweaterSwagg Right😅. Sorry but i really don't like this type of man

Not close at all
🤗 Vehicle was to much in the way and big bush tree blocked some of the chase and camera was off, when the giraffe actually got away!😳

The lions are trying to stealthily approach the giraffe with two offroad vehicles driving next to them. Not a tactic I would use for a recon mission.. Nature in the savannah seems to have become a complete commercialized circus for humans. Maybe we should let the animals live their life and perhaps observe from a respecting distance?
