Ever thought about what’s in bear spray? It’s pretty cool stuff! You gotta use it up close, but it’s super good at making bears back off. As soon as it hits a bear’s eyes, they start to sting and water a lot. If the bear breathes it in, it can make their throat feel all scratchy and hard to breathe. I remember the story with a park ranger using bear spray. He sprayed the grizzly bear with bear spray and it got even more aggressive and attacked him not once but twice the second time was a lot worse than the first attack. He said in a interview he wished he was armed with a firearm. 😐😐😐😐

That was a “tame” bear that it’s “owners” were working with and the guy attacked wanted to be part of the routine and was standing there as they were talking about the routine and then the bear attacked the guy because he was not familiar to the bear. The attack was only a few seconds before the bear was driven off.

Fun fact bear spray is weaker then regular pepper spray being as a bears eyes and sinuses are more sensative so less capsaicin but more volume is what is looked for. Large clouds that are hardnto avoid but watered downish so as to not be as bad for you if your in a heavy wind

yep, bears noses are very sensitive, they depend on their sense of smell primarily to find food. Anything that affects their noses will keep them off you.

you're right its safer to avoid them entirely. but if you're in any close encounter with a bear, the bear spray will cause them an immense amount of suffering if used. And in most cases that will be enough to drive them away.

Yeah, after seeing your comment I looked it up and I just read a story about this from The Guardian. it's really crazy. I learned the bear was eventually killed though. A 25-year-old bear and almost at the tail end of its life. I learned the spray cans last about 7-9 seconds so it's probably easy to use it up fast.

@@cinaedmacseamas2978 Yeah he made it indoors and shut the doors behind him. He said he first fired a warning shot to scare the bear only to find it charging at him. And even though he had only one bullet left he made the decision to shoot it at it's side in order not to kill it but that wasn't enough to stop it from charging at him.

Its much more effective than guns, and is banned in national parks when guns aren't (probably because of how effective it could be as a weapon). I think its dumb that its banned tho cuz thats the one place you would need it the most if you bought it

It's probably banned in parks because bear sprays use a "burst" system & the wind will carry it, causing it to harm people & other animals. That's why police officers carry stream OC sprays on their duty belts to prevent OC spray from flowing back on them or other people.

Anyone who has been though OC'd training knows exactly what that feeling is like. This stuff HURTS and is a very good Non-lethal way of stopping a threat from humans as well as animals 😕. I've seen it happen.

which brand of bear spray has that on the can? I've seen a couple warning signs on bear spray cans, but I've not seen what you've mentioned here. if you know it, I'll genuinely like to look it up and see.

I'd carry it in my car for self defense, but it may explode in temperatures greater than 120 degrees. Not taking a chance in the Texas summer. They also off-gas and, supposedly, need replacing after 4 years - per manufacturer instructions. Same for pepper spray, however, My small pepper spray container handled last summer, no problem.
It's also in cinnamon that's why you use cinnamon in your garden or on your lawn if you have a problem with ants you don't have to use any nasty chemical
I just looked it up after I saw your comment because I had doubts about it, and it turns out you're right. It's actually a part of cinnamon although a very small amount. I learned the primary compounds that make cinnamon spicy are cinnamaldehyde and eugenol. These compounds contribute more to cinnamon's spicy taste which is actually a different form of spiciness from chili pepper. Also, the Scoville scale measures the level of heat in foods primarily based on their capsaicin content and I learned cinnamon doesn't rank on there.

I learned that cinnamon truly does affect ants by interfering with their pheromone receptors and that disrupts their ability to communicate and coordinate activities with each other. I also found out it's not the capsaicin in there that affects them but rather the compound cinnamaldehyde. It makes it difficult for the ants to navigate and find food sources. yeah, that was not referring to the spray. If you noticed that part of the video, the narration was "Unlike guns, you'd have to be close enough to use it. But it really works wonders in getting them to back off." And the scene was a guy with a large gun shooting at a charging bear, but the bear dusted it off and kept charging at him. hope this clarifies things.

I see you point but like I mentioned in the pinned comment. There is a study that suggests pepper spray has been more effective at warding off bears than guns have. So, I think for the average untrained person their best chance is with the spray. That's if the study is accurate.

The issue with spray is that you could become contaminated and regularly oc feels like the devil pissed in your face so I can only imagine what bear oc would feel like a 10mm or 44mag is a better option

It kind of gives the wrong impression, Bears are 1000 times more susceptible to pepper spray than humans. Bear spray normally contains 18% capsaicin. Good law-enforcement level pepper spray for humans is 20-22%. Bear spray normally comes out in a large area fog while human pepper spray comes out in a concentrated stream.

A huge grizzly bear on that grizzly bear island off of the Alaska Coast just killed three hunters, who had bear spray, only! Voice is very thick there and it's hard to know when a grizzly is coming on you especially if they're 10 or 11 ft tall!
