It's great to see a quick spurt made the bear turn away. I may have done that a little sooner. Walking backwards in the woods while trying to concentrate on the animals movement has got be very stressful as well as extremely concerning.

I had a similar problem on Eglin AFB in 1990. Was walking backward just the same as this guy. Just didn’t have bear spray; only a 12 ga. shotgun. After walking like that for about 1/4 mile, I was beginning to get worried about dark setting in. I still had about 1.5 miles to go to get to my truck to drive out. I decided to stand my ground and try to yell and warn it off. It never left and got closer… I shot the rabbit three times before I felt safe. Never underestimate the danger presented by those cute ears and tail.
Last rabbit I saw @ hunting season. I called out to my cousin because there's no way a rabbit is worth cleaning to eat! The whole family joined in pointing it out and got my cousin his 1st rabbit. Also his last, smart man!

He waited way to long to spray. Even just putting out a plume the bear would have had to walk through would make the bear second guess what's it's doing.
I worked at the local Cabela's a few years ago. Had a lady call me asking how much bear spray she needed to use on her kids to keep them safe running through the woods. Took me 5 minutes to explain to her it's used for bears.

I think an indispensable skill in woods-craft is to be able to "read" animals' behavior...to be able to discern what they are thinking when a human/animal encounter occurs. My interpretation of this encounter is that the man did well to back up slowly in order to show the bear he himself had no aggressive intentions. However, after 50 feet of that approach, it became evident he had convinced the bear he had no evil intentions, that the bear was not in the least intimidated by him, and that now the bear was going to see how much he could impose himself on the man. When an animal develops that mindset, further retreat only reinforces further imposition by the animal. Now the animal begins to interpret further retreat as increasing fear in the man, which results in escalating aggression by the animal. I would have taken a stand at about the 50--75 foot mark and shown the bear that I am not helpless...that I have defensive weapons that can make him regret his aggression. This is, in fact, how it turned out anyway. But...had the guy waited too long, and the bear done a full out charge, it might have been too late. After all, how far can you walk backwards through woods without tripping...and triggering a charge?

Each time the bear trotted towards this guy it was getting closer and closer. That bear wasn't playing, he was getting ready for dinner.
Videos like this make me appreciate that the closest experience I have to a wild animal attack was a squirrel using my head as a shortcut between trees.

I had to shoot a Grizzly in the head with 00 Buckshot in Alaska at 10 feet, I gave him every chance possible to change his mind. I had to change it for him...
Everyone has an opinion and every situation is different. I think this was handled well. My impression is that the bear is young and more curious than anything. I probably would have sprayed him much earlier. All that backing up was risky. Hopefully yogi will now have strong enough negative experience with humans that he will keep his distance. Thanks for posting this, it is very educational.

They guy literally said he was baiting the bear on Facebook. He was doing a tutorial which bear sprays work best and said always try them out on younger bears first like he did in that video. It was very informative at least now I know which bear spray to mess with the neighbors dogs and cats in my neighborhood lol

@@stevehamilton3181At first I felt the same way but then again they have to test it somehow and this experience will likely condition the bear into being more fearful of humans and less likely to get into close proximity with people, which could potentially be dangerous for both people and the bear itself.

He did the right thing, if it didn’t back off then that’s just the bears fault and would have to taste the bear spray. You should really only attempt to scare it away if you aren’t armed.

The bear is curious, and likely trying to decide if, when and how to attack this guy. It is not playful, or innocent. It is abnormal for a bear to approach or follow you. This black bear was nervous, yet still pushing himself to follow this guy. The way he used the trees was more about protection for the bear, and when he started to climb multiple trees, it was because his instinct and tendency is to flee danger, but he was pushing his luck and he was nervous about it. In short, this was among the most dangerous situations you can have with a black bear, and the guy should have stopped, and did everything in his power to scare it as soon as he realized it was following him. The longer he allowed it, th more emboldened the bear came and more of a chance he made a mistake like tripping which triggers the attack...

I was intrigued to watch how the Bear was closing down the distance between it and the man. Very subtly 8-10 inches with each step. Very clever, intelligent stalking. No question the Bear was timing it's attack. Each tree it climbed was 2-3 feet closer to the man than the last. Nothing the Bear did was by accident.
You can usually tell the species of bear from the droppings; Black bear droppings have berries and small bits of fur, Grizzly bear droppings have smartphones and smell like pepperspray.

Once we have a bear tracking us we spray the ground so they run into it with their nose - always enough as they take a deep inhale. This is a solid product.

Pepper spray being referred to as “Aways enough” has gotten people killed. relying on pepper spray is like hoping “gun-free zones” will stop shootings. Be prepared and carry a firearm if you’re in bear country.
I prefer a walking stick with a spear end. I woulda turned him into lunch. But not everyone played five years hockey, then six years lacrosse, and trains knives and machetes and bowstaff..... But it's useful.....😂

May I make a suggestion, instead of waiting until the bear charges for using the spray, squirt a little into the air as you retreat slowly, the bear is following your scent and so the idea would be that it reaches the scent of the repellent as it is in inquisitive mode and before it makes the decision to attack. This would hopefully cause the bear to break off so to speak and not engage.
Always a genius Monday morning quarterback. He probably didn't want to take the chance of enraging the bear and only sprayed it when he absolutely had to, which is the smartest thing to do.

Had an encounter with a black bear just like this last spring. It was only about 150lbs an from the moment it seen me an decides to start following I knew I had to do something. I didn't have bear spray or a gun, and it was backing me into a thicket of thorn bushes. I went from talking to it just like this guy to realizing that wasn't working. So In a split second decision I decided im done backing down. I put my arms up an out an screamed at it as loud as I could while stomping my feet towards it. That bear immediately said F this an went straight up the closest tree.

That's how it's done with black bears. With grizzlies you stay calm and stand your ground if charged.

Very patient man. That bear was definitely more in curiosity mode than hunt mode, but it is sooo important to show them that people are always worth running from. Bear spray gives them that lesson, and allows them to live another day.

The scary part is that they not always work and there's a chance you make them even (more) angry. At least, my dad's words. When I am bow hunting, I certainly wouldn't rely merely on some bear spray, but also having a shotgun and/or handgun with adequate calibre carried around just in case things goes south. But since it's a young one, non lethal solutions usually work well.
It likely won’t stop an attacking grizzly though. Better go armed in grizzly country.

And just like people, some individuals are more resistent against capsaicinoids than others, so I can ensure you that this principle can also be applied to bears or other animals.. I know stories about prisoners that didn´t even react on those sprays at all, except they became angrier.
People saying the bear is being "playful" are ridiculous. I promise you that bear does not want to play with this guy! It is curious about a potential food source and testing boundaries. Very glad that he had spray with him.

Never take a chance. Young bear or not, there's always instinct and that first time. He's big enough to be deadly. Facing the bear, walking backward is the safe thing to do. He may have been attacked if he turned his back. Talking to the bear was a way of trying to keep him at a distance. Better to hit the bear so he got a snoot full of spray. Make him regret following a human. He'll never forget it. Glad he's ok.

When the bear started jumping onto trees, he was just practicing for what he was planning to do to the person. Notice how he started doing that as he got closer and closer to the person. The next time he jumped, it was going to be on the person.
You're much more tolerant than I sir. The first round is a warning to cease and desist, if the bear persists I would be asking the CO if I could put the bear in my freezer so it didn't go to waste. I don't play games or reason with dangerous animals.

I live in black bear country. That bear was an adolescent, just being curious. You don't have to jump around and act crazy but if you would have raised your voice and yelled at it, it would have scattered fairly quickly. Also you could have sprayed the grass in front of you. As soon as it got a snort it would have backed right off.

I remember jogging through the woods in Northern California many years ago and coming face to face with a black bear on the trail. I can still remember the way that bear’s screams were almost as loud as mine😂

Doesn't that depend in the kind of bear? Black bears yell aggressively towards them but grizzly bears have calm communication with them?? I've luckily never encountered either but I hike in grizzly country so I definitely carry the hot sauce.

Probably following hoping he would drop some food. Kid did ok though, the little blast was just enough to give him a mouth full of something he didn't want. Hopefully that will hinder his curiosity. Didn't seem to be overly aggressive but better to be safe than sorry. 👍 both went home, that's a happy ending.
Better to have a curious bear approaching you slowly because you are talking to it like a three year old than a bear running at you at full speed because it sees you as a threat.

I believe that the most humane thing you can do for a bear that is so interested in you to follow you, is to discourage that behaviour IMMEDIATELY. If yelling loudly and waving your arms (while holding your bear spray) doesn’t work, you must use the spray. This way in the future, the bear will keep its distance from humans and all will stay safe…both the bear and the humans. This is just my opinion though.

The bears behavior ie climbing the trees huge sign of aggression the black bear climbs trees for comfort and to avoid attacks from dominant black bears of an area of the first time he started to tree himself as this is an unconfident adolescent, he stood his ground ie used bear spray, used excessive loud noises etc etc this bear would not have stocked him so far! The further he let him the greater the danger he allowed to himself and other possible hikers coming from the opposite direction. I live in bear country and have encountered a number of them in different situations but I’ve never had one follow like that. It was just a curious youngster but could have been trouble if it tried to practice attacking. I would have sprayed it too.

It's important to know what kind of bear territory you are in, and to wear items that create noise to prevent startling the animals. Many experienced hikers use the simple solution of attaching jingle bells to their packs. Identifying the bears in your area is easily done by examining their feces. Brown bears will be full of small twigs and berry seeds. Black bears will be the same with bones from small birds and animals present. Grizzly feces will contain jingle bells and smell strongly of bear spray. Be safe out there!

That bear seemed more curious and playful more than anything. The bear sprayer was talking to the bear rather calmly...it's best to yell and be more dominant when try to talk that wild beast away.

Are you nuts, its a hunting technique. You chase him up the tree, he pounces on you. He was also using the trees to try and get the guy to run, then he can attack from behind. They like to bite the nuts. If your alive and screaming and he's chowing down on your now severed leg, he won't look up until he's ready for your other leg. They don't have feelings for you.

As soon as that bear started hopping onto the trees, I could tell it was becoming excited and the hunting instinct was kicking in. I’m glad you had your camera, but more glad you had bear spray!

Bear encounters are extremely common in my province. I've seen a black bear nearly every single day this summer. Just yelling loudly and aggressively will get them to back off. Also stand as tall as you can and lift your arms to appear bigger.

My understanding (from watching another video) is that bear spray should be deployed well beyond the close range this bear gets. The other video made mention of how quickly a charging bear can cover ground and the idea of bear spray is to lay out clouds along the bear's intended path, ahead of the bear so that it has to go through the stuff to reach you. Apparently, this large bear spray canisters has some decent range. And, as noted in this video, as soon as the individual deployed the spray, the bear was off and running, so I think I'd opt for the quick deployment of any bear heading my way.
I have one that sprays 40 feet. The thing about this situation is, if the guy would've been loud and aggressive rather than his soft, friendly, "hey, bear", he probably would've scared the bear off without even needing the spray. Black bears are way more skittish than most people realize. But outside of that, he definitely waits wayyyyy too long and lets the bear get way too close before he FINALLY sprays. And it only took a quick tap of the trigger.

I would never trust my life against a bear on spray. I'm always strapped when I enter Bear country, even a puny black bear. Any bear that wants to attack me will taste some 10mm rounds from my Glock

Yes you’re suppose to release it in the air before it gets near you. And let it rip at 15 ft (while holding a high caliber hand gun, in my case)

The best way to keep a bear away is to start being as loud as you can. Other options include opening up your jacket, like wings, and try to appear as large as possible. If you're with multiple people, group together. The main thing is to show the bear that you aren't worth the energy to take down. Generally, bears have poor eyesight so doing the things I mentioned are likely to succeed.

That young bear was getting bolder and bolder, it was thinking of attacking you from the moment it saw you but was intimidated; none of his prey stand upright like that, the closest reference on how to take that animal down for food would be charging the trees like he’s doing (could also be an instinctual response to test your intimidation) but in short he was out foraging and when he saw you was thinking of making a human sandwich.

From what I've gathered I don't think there are many animals that would actually eat humans as we quite literally taste horrible to them but hunger is always the dominant side when close to starvation so you can never be careful.

This is pretty textbook as for what to do when running into a bear. Be calm, don’t run, and slowly back away. The other other thing, like a few comments mentioned, is to put your arms up or make yourself look as large as possible, and maybe make a loud noise while doing so. Still, sometimes none of this works, and that’s why a can of bear spray is an important thing to have while in the woods.

Ehh, he was walking very slowly. And likely looking backwards more often than you can tell with the camera. Not very easy to trip when you are being calm and slow like this dude was.
Tripping while doing the walking backwards thing is a massive hazard and shouldn't be discounted.
It was quite intense.that big bear moved fast .I thought it was going to pounce from the tree.the guy dealt with this scenario very well.
I don't know much but it seems like if you have a deterrent that you should use it sooner and not keep backing up for so long. If you're walking backwards you're more likely to fall and then you'd be dead. Just remember when in bear country the best deterrent is to take a slow Uncle with you.
